Well overdue a new pair of runners and wondering what all of yous wear in terms of best brand? I had a pair of Addias and used them for classes, gym walking etc but they are well overdue a change now.
Unfortunately I pulled my calf muscle a second time this year so I now want to get a proper pair especially with good support and cushioning. My friend said Ascis are a good make I tried some on but the size seemed a bit narrower than my old size 5 Addias and some reviews on google say they can be a narrow fit. Anyone own an Ascis pair and did you just get your normal size?

It depends on what you want them for, how you run, your feet, and a whole host of other factors. Shoes are VERY person specific.

It's worth geting shoes fitted by these guys: http://www.amphibianking.ie/

    +1 for Amphibian King

    They recommended Saucony for me
Who?? Never heard of them before, I know all the main brands but not them

    But they've been excellent

Head along OP and get their opinion

    As said above.

made the mistake when i started of buying asics fuel to their rep. 100 and odd euro down the drain plus very sore legs etc.

    Get tested....your worth it :-)

Yes I'm just more wary now of getting proper runners esp after that recurring injury I got, my friend is a physio and recommended the Asics gel ones I will try a few on to see how comfy they are. I just need them for basic fitness 2 classes of Zumba a week and an hrs walk twice a week. Not really for running or anything hardcore :)

I have real difficulty in buying runners, as i don't buy the sweatshop ones, which rules out most.

The only ones I've been told can be non-sweatshop are new balance. Anyone know a good pair of NB for jogging? they'd have to be from their made in the USA/UK range. My last pair are 8 years old :D and can't be doing my knees much good :D

I'd be a fan of getting the correct type of runners from the start. Like Hanley said they are very person specfic.

I've gone to runways of Parnell Street and had them check out my gait in various pairs of runners until we found what fit best...ie..ankles not wobbling all over the place etc. They ask you to walk/ jog or run on a treadmill (depending what you want the runners for) and they video you doing it in various pairs of runners until you fiind a good fit.

Just an idea...oh btw the gait testing is free

Not meaning to derail, but I heard an advert for an Irish company doing barefeet shoes, does anyone have the name of the company by any chance?

Do you mean vibram? Innov8? Merrell trail gloves? New balance minimus? Something else?!

I found fitfeet by googling, are all those Irish company's too? what would you recommend for a 1st pair for general outdoor cardio and light hiking?

Elverys is doing a free gait and foot analysis thing down stairs in their suffolk street shop. Similar thing if its easier for the OP to get to.

You can't compare this to Amphibian King or Runways!

Asics do it for me, my own size, but I've been experimenting with fivefingers with great results on the whole barefoot thing.

    +1 for the King.
Was there yesterday and got the Gait analysis done.
Binned the old Nike and look forward to trying out the new Asics

None of them are Irish. There's Irish retailers for the brands, but none are manufactured here. barefoot.ie is another option. As far as I know, 53 degrees north and maybe snow & rock do innov8s and vibrams.

I'm not an expert in these shoes by any means, but I'll be buying a pair of New Balance MT10 and Vibram 5 fingers soon.

Start very, very gently if you're going to start running in them. Even hiking can be a tough ask. If you're going over very rocky terrain you need to pick your shoe very carefully (HINT: do not wear Merrell Trail Gloves on Croagh Patrick, for example )

shoes are very specific to the person.

Ive ran for years and always worn asics no problems.

using a pair of cumulus right now which seem to give a lot of support.

I've always trouble with getting running shoes, size 12 and only reebok size 12 seems to be big enough, I'd go to one these fellows to get check out my feet but unless they made them especially for me I'd be still stuck with not much choice. Mens reebok don't sell much in Irish shops either so having to buy online.

New Balance go up pretty big. Amphibian King stock them as well...

I got a basic gait analysis done last year and recently used the info they gave me and got a new pair of shoes.

I got Nike Lunareclipse 2, a mid support running shoe. Cost me €105, noticed a big difference in my stride compared to my Nike Pegasus 2. which are just cushioned as opposed to having proper support.

I'm a size 12 or 13 depending on the brand, they fit really well (size 12) as Nike normally do for me.

    another + for the king.

I have two pairs of runners i alternate in.

Asics and New Balance. I've wide feet, and both pairs fit perfectly and offer great support.

I like asics but the best option as said above is to get your feet tested and then get a shoe that fits properly or get good orthotics for your current runners.
