1st week weight loss worry

    Hi everyone,

I'm just looking for a little reassurance that my body hasn't decided to eat itself instead of all my fat. I tried to lose a stone a few months ago through exercise and healthy eating and got to 63kg but for the next two months could not get down to my goal of 60kg (which I used to be two years ago). It was very very frustrating as it was obvious physically that I still had weight to lose.

So I gave up out of low motivation. I kept on some exercise and ate a good deal healthier but didn't stop myself having the odd Chinese or popcorn and malteasers at the cinema. So this went on for three months and my weight crept back up to 66kg.

Two weeks ago I felt the impending doom that is my wedding dress fittings looming over me. I decided that even if I couldnt get beyond 63kg that's it's better to be that half a stone lighter. So for the first week I started to exercise more and eat a lot healthier and lost 1 pound. A friend of mine chatted to me over the weekend and said it was worth seeing if I had a wheat intolerance considering how my weight loss stalled the last time so suggested I remove bread and pasta from my diet for a week just as a trial.

I thought what harm could it be so replaced any pasta or white rice in my diet with brown rice. I also cut out my morning toast replacing it with porridge with a mixed seed topping and also removed the bread from my meat sandwich and added a salad instead.

Well this week folks I lost 5 pounds. My stomach has shrunk. My OH commented yesterday that even when I was 60kg my stomach didn't look that slim. So great yay! I lost half a stone in two weeks. And this is where my worry started. That weight loss is waaaaay to fast. I don't want to lose muscle mass.

So I guess my worry is one of two things, that I've done something wrong with my diet eating too little etc, or I do have a wheat intolerance in which case that weight loss is probably an indicator of that and I should go to an allergy specialist to confirm it. In the second case I'm very sad cause that means no more pizza :(

TL;DR lost a half stone in one week after cutting out bread and pasta. Worried my weight loss is unhealthy.

great idea it remove bread and pasta. The first week is probably water loss as wheat (pasta) can cause water retention. The change in your stomach is very likely a reduction in the bloating that as previously caused by the wheat.

This initial high weight loss with plateau and no your body hasn't decided to eat itself. Whats the rest of your diet like, what training are you doing and whens the wedding?

I'm in a Musical at the moment so I'm dancing around at rehearsals 2 times a week, plus walks (with zombies run so breaking into a jog every now and then) and if I can sometimes I do a yoga sess at home.

    My diet is as follows for an average day;
Breakfast: 40g Porridge oats, 10g of mixed seeds, 100ml of low milk and one very bold teaspoon of sugar (I cannot live without it)
Lunch: A large portion of mixed leaf and fresh veg salad with a small portion of meat (chicken, ham, tuna etc.) I don't use salad dressing as I'm allergic to a few things.
Dinner: 200g of brown rice, 130g of chicken and a sauce (maybe indian, tomato based or maybe a sliver of garlic butter I don't eat creamy sauces never have never will), I will also have a portion or two of veg with this meal depending on what's in the fridge could be broccoli, green beans, peppers, anything really. Except cauliflower which is a vegetable put on this earth to disgust me.
Snacks: Can vary day to day but on average I would eat two out of this list, 50g of peanuts, 2 rice cakes, an apple, a banana, a carrot, a slice of melon, etc.

I also make my own soups every now and then like veg or potato and leek or tomato and I'll sub that in for a salad at lunch time if it's cold and wet outside.

I think my diet is alright I'm averaging at 50% carbs, 25% protein and 25% fat.

The wedding is in late November and I have another 10 pounds to lose. I'm 5" 6 140 pounds at the moment and I used to be 130 pounds so I would like to be there again.

I don't think your weight loss is unhealthy. Removing rice or pasta in diet is a great choice and as what the other member commented, wheat(pasta) is a water retention. Such a big help.

If it's some consolation, I dropped from 65/66kg where I was stuck for a good while, down to 63kg pretty quickly just from cutting out bread and wheaty snacks. It has seemed to make a real difference! My tummy has always been podgy (and still is) but looks much smaller for reducing the wheat/carbs. (I have mild IBS so I still bloat, but that's irrelevant for this post!) I think it's as much to do with how you feel too - don't just look at the numbers. Do you have enough energy? Are you feeling low or tired, or suffering headaches? If you're feeling good, stick with what you're doing. Drink plenty of water. Have a slice of pizza occasionally and don't feel guilty/worried about it. I've found it's all trial and error; everyone's different and you have to adopt a diet that suits your lifestyle. If you're feeling happy and healthy, you're doing it right. :)

Dont worry about it, its not fat or muscle you've lost its water weight that the starchy carbs were holding that has been lost. Its common in just about everyone that cuts wheat from there diet, the carbohydrate cells from wheat can hold 4 times their weight in water so if your thinking 6 pounds is a lot, 3 - 4 pounds of this could easily be water.

Start eating pasta and bread again, drink enough fluids and you easily put back on 6 lbs in a few days
