Just wondering if yer going out on the 1st of September and if so what's your plans

Myself and another member got an invite to go to Tipperary to an old hunting buddy of mine. The plan is to head out for ducks at 05:30hrs, followed by a hearty lunch in the farm house and then stalk some fallow, back in for the dinner and then out for an evening flight, followed by some foxing. Put down a fire in a converted mill on the property and crack open a few beers and start the war stories and slagging. Then up at first light for another stalk. Cant wait

probably be up at 4 and head out for some duck in the morning.. and like yourself have a stalk for deer in the midday in a spot where we've spotted a fiew and if we get any luck we might head out for some duck in the evening, tis great having a bit longer than 6 o'clock to stalk, for now. Must stock up on a few boxes of shells too.

I'll be in Killarney on my own stag on the first of September! Somehow my brother (not into shooting at all) managed to organise it all and then tell me the dates!
Ah sher not to worry, I'm on a rest week for the full of the following week so I'll get plenty of shooting in then.

I'll be on lough Corrib on 31st suppin beer and moppin up some BBQ food. Decoys in place for the following morning. Get the first flight in, them back to camp for breccy. Break camp and shoot my way up the lake all day and the obligatory pints in the local that night.

Best of luck to all on the 1st, safe shooting.

Since startin stalking a few years ago I always had to get out as much as I could in the 1st week of September as I was in collage mon-fri an working every weekend. This meant the 1st week was the only time I could stalk without missing collage or work!

This year tho I'm gonna be working on the 1st bu not bothered cause I'm finished collage so any days off during the season can be enjoyed stalking without having to worry about having numerous assignments due!

I will try to get out on the 1st evening after work but that depends on whether I have hurling training as we approach the business end of the championship! :D

I know the feeling I was in the same boat; fishing like f**k the last week of august, full time hunting the 1st week of september then back in college the second week depressed as Fcuk, it would be made worse if the 1st of november fell midweek!

Search foreshore that has been discussed before, you wont have it back in time for the 1st.

Was hoping to go after a nice red with my new .308 but licence is dragging like hell, but never mind, I can wait. So I'm heading down the shore for an early duck in the morning, hitting the snipe in the afternoon(can't WAIT:-D),and then going for more duck on my local lakes in the evening. I may "duck" into the local (sorry couldn't help that one)for a few after to talk ****e with the rest of the lads about how well we nearly shot all day:-D:-D:-D
Happy hunting all, and keep safe;)

I gave up shooting ducks so early in the season many years ago. They are still small and full of pin feathers and are a divel to pluck. Plus with the weather so good , if you dont get them prepared straight away they will be humming the next day when you walk into the shed.

Saw 25 or so duck at a pond on sunday.. Not where'll be heading probably in the openday though. If the rivers stay as flooded we might just head for deer instead.

Duck numbers seem to be down around here, with all the flooding & ponds appearing all over the place I'd say the duck have been pushed out into places they never were before. I'm going to let them settle down a bit first so for myself on Saturday its stalking, stalking & more stalking....

I have 2 new permissions lined up which I have been keeping a very close watch on. Seems to be plenty of activity so with any luck ill have something for the freezer.

    Excited!!!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭Birdnuts

I'll be down on my place in the West in a few weeks so I'm hoping to find a few snipe, mallard and possibly wigeon all going well. Its been a while since I enjoyed a proper hunters grill/platter!!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭Mauser 308

I am going to give the Deer a miss on the first weekend this year. Got so pi**** off on the first last year. There was guys out everywhere down on my permissions in the Slieve Blooms shooting Doe's and calfs and anything that moved. Swore I would never go out again there on the first.
So hopefully head down the local river for a few duck and leave the Deer for a week.
    Enjoy everyone.
