Cheltenham - November Meeting

Thinking of going again this year so I got in touch last night about a B&B. Have always stayed in the same place for November.

    In 2008 I paid £35pppn

Was on holidays in 2009 but the usual crowd still went. Again paid £35pppn & said crowds were way down on other years.

Despite this in 2010 the price increased to £45pppn

Was quoted £60pppn this year which is a bit rich seeing as you're staying in a spare room in someone's house

I'd love to say they're killing the goose that laid the golden egg but I'm sure some people will pay it. I won't

i would recommend hiring a car & booking accomodation outside cheltenham

    5th year in a row in November,usally hire a house between 4
house costs £560 for the 3 nights ,so £140 each

love the friday @ the november meeting.

I get a house in cheltenham (far side from racecourse) for the march meeting and it is only 550 for the week.. Its a decent walk to the racing but great value.

i think its only 255 for a 3 night stay in november for a 2 bed.. Come to think of it i might go...

We call this 'The Festival' or 'The greatest show on earth', I've never ever heard it referred to as the 'march meeting'

Heading over myself this year, never been to the PP meeting, so really looking forward to it, flying into Birmingham on the Friday and staying there Friday night, down to Cheltenham Sat morning untill Monday.

Was looking at the Thistle Hotel in Cheltenham, anyone any experiences of it??

The Thistle is a nice bit outside town, be much better off getting somewhere closer.

If you just want a bed before getting the train try the Britannia or the Ibis. Both are a stones throw from New Street Station. Think there might be an Ibis by the airport so make sure you get the one in town!

I've stayed in both the night before pillar day & it's been 30-35 pounds for a twin (might be a bit more expensive as they'll know it'll attract a lot more visitors in November). Basic enough but does the job. I'd probably prefer the Ibis as it's slightly more modern and has a 24hr bar!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,669 ✭✭✭Colonel Sanders

Staying by the airport is probably an option either. It's only a very short hop into new street

Never stayed out there though so don't know hotels. More pubs/restaurants in town too obviously

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,669 ✭✭✭Colonel Sanders

£55 for a twin or double in the Ibis, Britannia charging a cheeky £82

Ibis wins every time for me tbh

Yeah I stayed there last two years. Had a triple room which was very comfortable. Its a lovely spot, about 2 miles from Queens hotel / O Neills pub. The brekkie is a full buffet each morning and sets you up for the day. Attheraces on each tv in the rooms. Late bar also and they buy in kegs of Guinness especially for the Open meeting.
We booked through Tullys travel. Last year we got it for €495pps for flight, bed and breakfast for 3 nights and airport and racecourse transfers.

An alternative to the Thistle is the Holiday Inn, about 1 mile from the course and across from the Brewery bar and restaurant area. Again, accommodation is modern and comfortable but no hearty breakfast in the mornings.
We also commuted from Cardiff one year. There are fairly regular trains which are 60mins to Cheltenham Spa station and great bus transfers to the course. It can be draining after a long day backing losers though but worth thinking about for a day trip.
Its doubtful Im going this year after being the last four years and I am very sick reading this thread.

Fifth year going to this, flying into Bristol and out of Birmingham as the time make more sense for us.
Noticed the accommodation getting a bit steeper. Stayed in an apartment last year and to be honest will never go back to a b&b after. Let's be honest, you are up early and out till the we hours too. You only see the bed for four maybe five hours if your lucky so the price of a hotel is wasted. And at £5 for the fry up in a cafe you can't go too far wrong there either.

I'm going the 2 days of Sandown meeting in December instead

Couldn't justify the cost for Cheltenham in November

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭Overthelast

Heading over for the 3 days. I too cannot wait. Few pints & a bit of banter won't go astray. 7th visit for nov meeting, I've never turned a profit at this meeting but I'm determined to change that this time around. Blind optimism!

A nice card tomorrow but if I have to take a day off work, it's the Cotswolds for me Urban rather than the wilds of Kildare!

There is a graduation chase in Carlisle - run early nov. Exotic Dancer 06 & Little Josh from 2010 ran in it before going onto glory in the PP itself a couple of weeks later. Its on this sunday & the entries are up now. I'm not saying the winner will come from it, but its worth keep an eye on.

be very careful with booking your digs / b&bs on the net.
We met four lads there last year who got stung for £500 between them.
Cant remember the exact scam, but it was good.

Drinking wise we have a very simple routine. Food grabbed in random spots along the way

Thursday - The Kings Arms / maybe one or two in the queens
    Friday - The Cotswold / O'Neills / Rotunda / Queens
Saturday - The Cotswold / Rotunda (for what ever footy is on) / O'Neills / Queens
Usually do a stint in the Montpelier Wine Bar too at some random stage.

Some of those places above are proper st!t holes, but at this stage we're half known in them.

In that order....... squeeze food in somewhere along the line/

"Might" have a couple of spare tickets for Saturday if anyone is interested. We have had a couple of late cry offs
    PM me.

Would Ideally swap them for Friday tickets as we are short for Friday

Try the dumps down the other end of the town :-)
There is one bar I can't remember that isn't too bad, reasonable food and drinks. It's across the road from another kippy huge bar on a street similar to the end of grafton street.

Main attraction down there is the phenomenal strip club that is a bar/nightclub upstairs and a strip club downstair next to that kip wetherspoons....best looking mares in town!! Funny we went in the first year to the bar/nightclub promising we wouldn't go downstairs..that lasted about 30mins..strolled out 7hours later with empty pockets , a walking horizontal tent and all the strippers knowing us by name...what a night

Normal fair resumed after that night but was nice to be on the dark side for a night

The novice chase tomorrow should give us a good indication of how the staying novices in England are shaping up.

Fingal Bay has to concede weight but I would expect him to beat Dynaste given that he has the benefit of a run under his belt.

Cant have Fingal to beat Dynaste myself after his last run. Dont get the continuing hype about even after that.

    Random thought

Why did John Hales buy Azertyioup?

Is anyone going to report on the novice chase? What happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,610 ✭✭✭yaboya1

Dynaste won impressively. Fingal Bay was second.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭NaiveMelodies

Fingal bay got the run of the race, jumped well as did the remainder, looked handy and the likely winner 3 out, but Scudamore had Dynaste going nicely in behind the quartet(until hillofuisneach was pulled up).

Then as Johnson began working on Fingal bay coming up to two out, Scudamore bustled Dynaste along nicely, and it was evident before the last who the winner would be. Dynaste took the last a neck behind fingal bay but passed the latter with ease winning comfortably.. and with plenty in hand I would suggest..

I didn't catch who came in for 3rd but both Unioniste and Carlito Brigante struggled when push came to shove and were well back.

The race was run at a bit of a crawl though, wouldn't have said it was the greatest test of jumping ever.

He is a bollox with his ride at the festival and taking the wrong course he put me off backing Uncle Junior today

Back in the Celtic Tiger era I was in a syndicate. Our mare had just the 1 unplaced run in a very modest Kilbeggan bumper won by Uncle Junior who was also making his debut that night and I have followed his career with interest since then - for durability, winnings, he must be nearly the funnest horse in training to own.

I thought Dodging Bullets was admirable in winning, the way the race panned out but the one I'm taking from the race is Court Minstrel, ran into a bit of trouble coming around the final bend, but the way cruised into contention was encouraging. I think Paul Moloney knew he was onto a winner and got a bit over excited switching him here and there trying to get the best position. Flew up the hill after being slightly hampered at the last hurdle, and while it's hard to quantify when there was no pace and the race more than likely wasn't run to the winners strengths, I'd fancy Court Minstrel to close that 3 length gap considerably if they meet again.

thing is though that River Maigue (2nd) is likely to come on alot for what was his first run over hurdles, and could be a more likely winner come March

He was very keen early too, I think both look potentially to be better than the winner. Nicholls yard is in better form than Hendersons or Williams so that could be worth factoring in too.

going with Prospect Wells tomorrow @ 8/1
escapes a penalty for his close 2nd to Zarkandar last month and was 7L clear of the rest, may still be well handicapped based on that and his close 4th in the Supreme Novice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

Finding it difficult to back anything tomorrow. Coneygree in the second last, but the 12/1 is long gone, won very nicely on debut
