    Hey everyone. :D

I've seen this type of thread around other college forums so I thought I'd make one here. With offers coming out for LC students in five days I thought it'd be interesting to see other boardsies who hope to head to NUIG this September. :) I'll try get the ball rolling.

    Name: Ally

    Age: 18

    From: Dublin

    Course: Arts

Clubs/Socs: I think I'll be having a look at capoeira, orchestra and LGBT. :)

Saw this thread and thought I'd throw my bit in.

I'm a 3rd year student here in NUIG and I've lived in Galway all my life, happy to answer any questions people have.

Also, good luck to all of you, hope you've a great year :D

    Don't forget Chess!

Just going to say here to all of those who done well/got what they wanted in the LC, fair play and hope you have a good, rewarding time at NUIG. And to those of you who are iffy about the possibility of receiving what they want in the CAO offers, good luck and don't worry, I know many people who got only their second or lower preference and loved them, not to mention getting good career prospects from them!

    WILLKOMMEN!!

Off-topic; but I will try and sign up for Chess next year, despite the fact Ficheall would definitely kick my ass.

    How you doin'?

I'm fairly sure I am a member, or was, of GigSoc, Nailz, and I don't fall within the LGBT spectrum (geddit?). There are some pretty cool people in GigSoc (half of their committee are in ChessSoc, for example :P ) and it's such a relief to be able to hang out with girls who aren't constantly trying to get into one's pants.

Haha, fecking hell, I am constantly around girls who aren't trying to get into ones' pants and I don't even have to be in a society for that. ;) As a non—LGBT person also, I'm quite intrigued by it's appeal. Damn all of you, this is making me curious to find out what I'm missing out on...

That pun wasn't intended by the way. :p

Resisting the urge to add to said pun but... :P

What are the socs like? I'm looking forward to joining some and hopefully doing something musical... I are relatively clueless though!

There's GUMS (Galway University Musical Society, I believe) that does shows over the year. I don't know how often, never actually paid much attention to socs outside Physics Soc (and even then, only went to a few meetings).

I would join a few socs, but not too many. Best to dedicate yourself to a few rather than attempt to go to them all. I kinda regret not being more active in them as a first year, though tbh a lot of them were (are?) an excuse for a piss-up and being continually interrogated asked why I don't drink got annoying after a while.

GUMS generally do one big show around February and focus pretty much all of their efforts on that.

If your definition of "musical" isn't quite so specific, there are RockSoc, MusicSoc, TradSoc, ChoralSoc, KazooSoc (though I think this one may be dead) and OrchestraSoc too.

And yes, a lot of societies are just an excuse for a piss-up, sadly.

Perhaps "Drunk Chess" could be an activity to draw people in.

Take a pawn, drink 1 shot.
Every time you get Check, 1 shot.
Take pieces except pawns and the King, 2 shots (maybe the Queen is worth 3 shots).
Have a pawn make it to the other side, 3 shots.
    Checkmate, entire bottle of vodka.

I could see ChessSoc dominating the other socs then.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭joeKel73

If you've any interest in photography - join Photo Soc. ;) Some v interesting talks and workshops over the last year. Not pub-centered but plenty of nights out afterwards for those interested and both foreign and local weekend trips.

There'll be a societies day and clubs day anyway so have a good chat with the ones your genuinely interested in and see what they've planned.

If any societies tell you they "throw the biggest and best parties in NUIG", walk away, please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

I'll second what Joe said - PhotoSoc are much cooler than the party societies.

Socs day is the 12th of September. One of the highlights of the college year, imho, so don't miss it.

We did that. Our attempt is described more fully in the email of the 28th of March 2010, here, but the tl;dr version is that although we had shot glass chess sets, free drink, and about a dozen people who turned up - nobody was drinking. A complete failure.

Heh, guess ChessSoc doesn't bring in the heavy drinking crowd. Maybe strip chess would be a better idea, although knowing that, no women would show and it'd be an utter sausagefest :pac:

Is Socs day always that early? I don't remember it being in the first week of lectures (well, for first years).

I'm interested in any and all Socs! Particularly those to do with languages :) I.E French and Irish soc. Also are there any socs for languages in general? And are there any facilities for playing tennis at NUIG? :D Also if there's a fitness soc I would be on that in a shot haha. So many interests :P

I also don't drink, is this going to hinder my social life at NUIG?

And are there any facilities for playing tennis at NUIG? :D

Unfortunately not, there used to be but they've now replaced them all with car parks. You'll find free tennis courts in westside (15mins from NUIG), there may still be courts in corrib village (?).

EDIT: There is an NUIG Tennis Club - they train in the Lawn Tennis Club in Salthill - Sundays i think.
I also don't drink, is this going to hinder my social life at NUIG?
Shouldn't do, but you'll probably enjoy pubs and late bars more than night clubs. Plenty of free music and comedy gigs etc to search out.

Damnit! Tennis in the carpark it is then :P Haha jk, tennis club sounds great! I'll be checking it out :D Sounds like it! I like nightclubs if the tunes are good and the craic too, but most nights out are just pissups, which I don't give a f**k about to be brutally honest, haha. Pubs and late bars should do the trick :D Thanks for the info :)

There are language socs, though I don't know how active they are. You'll find out on Socs Day anyway. If you're interested in keeping up with Irish/French, I think you can do a Diploma alongside your degree in Irish or French. There may be other languages, but I know for definite about those two.
If you have optional modules to pick in 2nd/3rd year, you can pick French or German as well. It's definitely available in Undenominated Science, whether it's available in Denominated programmes is course-dependent.

Any first years staying in Gort?

And about the swimming/tennis clubs, do you have to join the gym/pay for membership or what's the deal?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭joeKel73

Joining clubs is generally free, or sometimes €2 nominal fee. The likes of the tennis club might charge a couple of euro per training session to go towards costs. Most clubs will have training times in the Kingfisher which are free, water sports clubs train after public hours (9.30pm->11pm).

Gym (incl pool) membership costs €250 for 12months for students.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,924 ✭✭✭✭RolandIRL

I really wish they'd introduce a 9 month or semester-length payment for the gym. I'm sure they'd get more people signing up since it wouldn't seem like such a waste.

That said, I probably still wouldn't go the gym >_>

This, so much. I'm a bit of gym fanatic myself and usually I only have to pay €180 for a membership for myself for a year at my local. I won't be living in Galway for the summer and I just don't know if I can bring myself to get the membership for a year. :( that said though, I probably would use up over €250 worth of gym facilities in 9 months so I'll probably just end up paying it. Are there many other gyms around Galway?

Also I know it depends on who you get and all but I put myself down for a twin room in Centrepoint and was wondering if many people in twin rooms often have difficulties with their room mate? I think I'll have to light myself a candle before I head down. :o

THIS. THIS. THIS! Haha I swear I nearly always agree with your posts ;) t's like you're the girl version of me :pac: And also about the gym I think €250 is a bit steep for students like :/ I mean, we are poor! Well, I am anyway ;) If they had a 9 month deal I think they'd be getting a lot of new members. Anyone here in the swimming club want to pass that by them? ;)

Also I want to know about the room mate thing too :S I've been going through my head all the possibilities of a person I could end up with and they're not very pleasant :D And still, they could be really sound and wondering the same about me

It's €5 a visit for pay-as-you-go so if you use it more than 50 times, you're saving money. I also think non-members have to go at certain times.

Regards to gyms, I think there's Peak Physique on Headford Road, NRG in Bohermore, and there's another Kingfisher somewhere else as well. I'm not too well up on gyms (I'm a lazy bastard) so someone else probably has better info to give.

I'm so incredibly jealous of all you guys still in NUIG. I just finished in May as a mature-ish ;) student and would love to have stayed on if circumstances were different.

I had a ball there at the grand old age of 38 so can only imagine the craic if I had've been 18-19ish.......

Just wanted to extend a big welcome to all the incoming NUIG students and also to the new faces here in the NUIG forum. Make yourselves at home in this forum and feel free to ask anything.

Right, where to begin. So many damn questions, so little time. I'll introduce myself 1st, my name is Mark, and I am basically one of those people who gets involved in EVERYTHING! (yes, we can be extremely annoying) I am going into 3rd year of Undenominated Science and if you get excepted into the HEAR course, I will be seeing you on Sunday the 26th!
Resisting the urge to add to said pun but... :P

What are the socs like? I'm looking forward to joining some and hopefully doing something musical... I are relatively clueless though!

The societies in NUIG are totally amazing! Yes, as mentioned there some societies are there simply for "partying" but there are also a lot that aren't. For musical (by musical I assume you mean music as a whole) there are plenty of societies for you. GUMS run a musical every Feburary, as well as the University talent show NUIG's Got Talent. They do far more then just focus on the musical, and the acting, singing and dancing with like-minded people can do wonders for your self-confidence! (If it is a bit low)

I am currently Treasurer of the 3rd biggest Society in the college, Music Soc (formerly Music and Ents Soc). We organise the battle of the bands, with Rock Soc in the College Bar, which is called Witless. It has some fantastic talent and the finals night is something to behold! We will be having jamming sessions which you are more than welcome to come along to, songwriting workshops and hopeful have students teach other students to play instruments for free!

Choral Soc get really involved with the University, singing at certain masses, having events and are just really nice people. Orchestra Soc is one of the rare societies you have to know something about to get involved in. If you can't play an instrument you won't be able to join in. SORRY! Trad Soc are mad craic all together, get sessions, great banter and great music! Usually on in Kelly's or the Crane Bar (two fantastic spots most nights).

    J o e wrote: »

Agreed, a. you usually have to pay to go them b. they are very sleezy events and c. the people that do go to these events don't exactly have the best repute in the University.
I'm interested in any and all Socs! Particularly those to do with languages :) I.E French and Irish soc. Also are there any socs for languages in general? There are a good few societies that deal with language! We have French Soc, which is all to do with French (obviously) We have a few Irish ones, the best to my knowledge is Cumman Craic, and they are very good. The SU also run Irish Conversational classes, ranging from beginner to expert. It's fantastic. There are no facilities, however the NUIG Tennis Club trains in Salthill Lawn Tennis Club every Sunday during the school year from 6-8. It's annoying that you have to pay 5 quid though! There is no fitness society per-say, but there are a few martial arts clubs, and they do weight training one nigh a week if that would interest you? As for the drinking, of course not. As long as you are willing to go to a bar with your mates and get raised eyebrows, it won't impact on you at all (and it definitely won't in societies and clubs)

    J o e wrote: »

Yes joining clubs is free and it is now free to attend there training sessions! It used to be €2 per club per night to attend, but that was scrapped as part of the deal to get rid of RAG week. Also, there are murmings that next year we will have a referendum to decide whether we should have universal membership included in our student levy for gym access for all. It would be €100 on top of the €224 we currently pay (and that €224 includes a €100 we are paying for the construction of that gym) so that may not be a problem in your 2nd year!

Hope that answered everything! Anymore questions just ask!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 601 ✭✭✭Lucario

Thanks for that above! So what you're saying is that by next year we could be getting gym for "free", so to say? Included in our levy obv..

Also if you're able to answer fizzyorange's Q about the roommate thing, it would be much appreciated :D

Look forward to some threads on this! Unlikely to happen, and if it does you'll probably have to pay the extra for membership of a gym that isn't anywhere near equipped for over 17,000 members!

Bear in mind that the proposal, as it stood there, was defeated.

Ohh of course. I have found (from my mates now, I never have nor will I ever share a room for more than 3 weeks with a person who I am not in a relationship with) that usually people in twin rooms get on really well! If ya don't, just call the housing agency, they can sort it out!

About the gym, yeah it's an awful proposal. But the sports clubs are pushing for it really hard, and if students against it don't get up off there backside, it could come to fruition.

However, that's a matter for another thread. 1st years, you're going to love NUIG!

The clubs captain was pushing it, not the clubs. I'm on the committee of a club that uses Kingfisher and have been for 6 years, and we discussed it and were very much against the proposal. But yeah - definitely one for another thread!!

Yeah, but you'd know from your results where you going. Most of the people on here seem pretty confident they are coming here, so I'd believe them.

edit: Seeing as the post I was responding to has been removed, I should point out that there was a post above this one from a a poster with the handle "Curious first year".

That's a terrible username. What happens when you pass the year or cease to be curious?
