Thought some people might be interested - the official orientation website for new students is here: http://www.tcd.ie/orientation/

I just have an idea that there might be just one or two people who might be looking at this forum following the Leaving Cert results tomorrow :pac:

Maybe this post is premature but I'm 90% sure I'm Trinity bound. I'm very excited about it, as for as long as I can remember I've been in love with the campus and its location.

My first choice is Computer Science, Linguistics, and French.

Also pretty sure I'm going to trinity. Plain ol' computer science for me. Thanks for the link

Also going to trinity. Anyone know how far away trinity hall is from the actual university?

    5km: http://goo.gl/maps/8AL04

There's a Luas stop nearby, buses, or you could walk or cycle.

Sorry I meant in time. Saw that it said 4km on the website but I'm not really sure how the traffic is or how fast public transport is etc. Just wondering how early I'm gonna have to wake up every day lol

5-10 mins walk to the Milltown luas stop. Takes 15-20 mins in depending on how busy it is. 5 min walk down Grafton St. If you're in the Arts Block, you're sorted, but if you're over in the Hamilton/East End it's another 10 ish minutes walk across campus. If you're in Goldsmith or the BMSI another 5-10 mins onto that!
If you're in at 9 for example, getting an 8 am or 7.50 luas would definitely have you in in time. So, giving yourself plenty of time, get up 2 hours before your lecture starts!

If you're getting the bus, the 140 leaves like right outside Halls, one on the hour, one at 20 past, and one at 20 to. If, for example again, you've a 9 am lecture, getting the 20 past bus should be fine. But maybe get the 8 am just to be sure! The bus stops on Nassau St, right outside the Arts Block side entrance! Again, it's a bit of a walk to the Science or Medicine buildings if you're over in those!
If you do miss the bus, and yeah it does happen. Run. Run really fast around the corner, and down a bit towards tesco. It does a sort of loop around Palmerston and through some housing, so you can get it like 2 mins later if you're unfortunate enough to miss it!

Walking takes about 40-45 mins, depending on how fast you walk. Walking through Rathmines takes up the bulk of the journey, then it's over Portobello, down into Harcourt, then follow the luas to Stephen's Green, then just down Grafton St as normal. You could follow the bus route, to make sure you don't get lost the first few times, but honestly that weaves its way around, adding unnecessary time to your journey.

The JCR, Halls' student union I suppose, will have information in the first few days to help you get in and out. They might even do some 'tours' in, to help you get to know the way!

Depending on how busy the luas or bus is, give yourself some time for delay or diversions. Generally at 8 or 9 in the morning, around 12 or 1, then 6 onwards is the busiest, for the luas anyway, I'm not too sure on how busy the bus gets, I didn't use it very often! If you've a lecture at any time other than peak times, you should be fine, and get in without hassle! If you have a break of an hour or two during the day, it's usually not worth going back to Halls, to leave again, literally straightaway, but if you have, say a 9 or 10 o'clock, then nothing til after lunch or the evening, you could go home for a bite to eat, or get in some last minute assignments or study!

You probably won't get a seat on the luas early in the morning, but Halls is start/end of the line for the 140 bus, so you should have no problem finding a seat!

I don't have any experience with cycling in, but I think most people pretty much follow the bus route, and it takes about 20 mins. Maybe someone else could help with that?

Sorry for the really long post, but I think I've explained almost everything about getting in and out to college! Anything else you need, just ask. Good luck!!

Cycling takes about 15-20 minutes. The quickest route is straight down Rathmines Road, but it's more pleasant (and only marginally longer) to go down Palmerstown Road and Mountpleasant Avenue where there's much less traffic.

Another option is to walk to Portobello, where there's a Dublinbikes station, and cycle the rest of the way in; this saves about 15-20 minutes compared to walking the whole way.

Very helpful posts guys, thanks! Saving this for later reference. I'm gonna be doing medicine so not sure which building that'll be in but it doesn't seem too bad :)

You'll pretty much be living in this shiny new building Do make sure you get involved in sports/societies, because you'll be sort-of off campus.

Ah I'm familiar with that place, it's near a dart station isn't it? What about all those buildings nearer the campus eg. 'medical school office', 'anatomy', 'physiology' etc. Are they not being used now that they've got the new building?

Yeah, they're building an entrance into Pearse DART station from the building itself. Looks like it's almost ready to open, but could be a while yet.

The move happened at the start of last year. I can't think of any first year stuff that still happens on campus, maybe some tutorials. You guys will never know the scramble to avoid the front seats during a certain lecturer's class. The new facilities are great though.

Definitely Chemistry and Maths, I'm just trying to decide between biology or physics now. I did physics for A level and really liked it.. I didn't do bio, but doing bio now leaves me with so many more options come third year so im not sure yet! At the minute I'm planning on doing chemistry in third and fourth year.
    What about you? :)

    Greetings fellow Englishist,
I doff my hat to thee,
Pray add me to thine Friends List -

Yeah wotevah. Let us compare monocles, pocket watches, umbrellae, and discuss the flexible merits of Montblancs - whilst imbibing copious volumes of Moet.

Nice. I'll be strutting around in a full length Crombie overcoat, black Prada Chelsea boots, LGBT rainbow socks, black leather gloves, black slacks, a red velvet double breasted waistcoat with silver buttons, a white shirt with a butterfly collar, a red and black stripped ascot, a black top hat adorned with a single peacock feather, a Longines fob watch and hipflask from Peterson's across the road filled to the brim with 12 year old Redbreast.

Dahling, your understated fashion sense is reminiscent of an 18th century bisexual vampire. So muggle. So ah, nouveau riche - as your choice of beverage mincingly evinces. One must solely consume Moet, preferably from a delicately wrought china teapot - totez Bertrand Russell. I sense that your surname lacks the triple barrel necessary to read English at Trinité. Bestow unto me thine LGBT rainbow socks, miscreant, or we shall be wont to cross canes (macassar ebony, natch).

I'm from Co Antrim too, Ballymoney to be exact, if you know the place. I'm in second year now, but you'll be more likely to get into halls if you live that far away =)

Ballymoney is only 30 mins from me! Random note but I keep my horse in Kilraughts just outside ballymoney so I know the area quite well. I'm really really hoping to get into halls, I would have no idea how to go about getting accommodation if I didnt :S

We probably know some of the same people, a girl I was best friends with in primary school is big into show jumping, goes by the name of Knipe, you probably know her, but yeah, you'll get into halls, and if you don't there are plenty of other options. Go on daft.ie, search for sharing accommodation and you'll find some lovely housemates looking to rent out a spare room, in fact I just rented out our spare room to a first year student who didn't want to go into halls. And if you need a semi-familiar face i'm only up the road when you get to Dublin lol
