    Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of any advantages/disadvantages to eating cooked (ie stewed or in a crumble) fruit rather than eating raw fruit. I'm not a massive fruit eater but I love eating it cooked. Ive had a look at a few websites but they all seem to contradict eachother. Some saw its easier to absorb nutrients if they are cooked, others say they lose their nutrient value...

    thanks!

Only fruit I know if that gets better nutritionaly with heating is tomatoes. Could be others.

I would guess that heating/cooking would increase the glycemic load of most fruits which I would see as a disadvantage.

The problem with "cooking" is that its a very vague term, a lot of them time when you hear the likes of "microwaves destroy all nutrients", they do not give times. I do expect a carrot in a microwave for an hour to have had nutrients depleted. If a kilo of carrots were gently warmed in a microwave for 2mins its not the same.

Even if it did deplete a little you could be better off cooking, as you are more likely to eat it, so could be more beneficial overall.

If you Google advantage/disadvantage of eating raw vs cooked fruits, you will really find massive results. Regardless of what these results say, I think it is good that you're eating fruits whether cooked or not than eat no fruits at all. After all, fruits are good for our health.

The problem I see with cooking fruit by stewing or otherwise is the refined sugar (sometimes massive quantities) that gets added during cooking. Even poaching tends to be done in a sugar syrup.
As for crumble, there tends to be alot of sugar in that too. It's grand as a desert once in a while but probably not recommended as your 5 a day.

Have you tried making smoothies out of fruit?
