I'd imagine part of the success of these is that the guys are just having so much making them and each of them has enough of a hard-core fanbase that they can ensure the movie will be a success.

First one was crap so won't be watching the second film. It's basically a load of 80s washed up actors still trying to be action heroes.

That's the idea of these films. It just went straight over your head.

Yeah, that's the reason I loved the first one. It was utter rubbish, just like all the second rate action movies in the 80's. Nothing close to acting, a clichéd storyline, over the top action and each second more implausible than the last. And you know everyone in them is having the time of their lives, hamming it up. It's my type of feel good movie.

I think they are churning the third one out quickly because of the very real possibility of one of those older stars dying in the meantime!

The third one has been in development for awhile now, most of the actors are contracted for it and a script is believed to already have been written. There's also talk of a possible 4th film and lets be honest here if parts 2 and 3 bring in enough money this could be the new Saw of Paranormal Activity only with a new film every 2 years.

Nope I was aware of the concept, but compared to some of the great and cheesy action films from the 80s this film was awful apart from the Mickey Rourke cameo.

Why spoiler-text have of the proposed cast? I don't follow the logic. This movie doesn't exist yet, and certainly not the cast-list, so I think it's safe to throw about names.

And yes, there was nothing to 'get' with #1, it wasn't some cunning wheeze by Mr. Stallone; the film had the cast, and the good-will from the audience, but the end product dropped the ball with some seriously lacklustre action & felt like a TV pilot more than the epic meeting of action-movie icons. Given the back-catalogue of some of its stars, a better movie was not much to ask. Jeez, the film couldn't even make a simple punch-up exciting.

Because this is the kind of movie where they could easily kill off characters. Finding out who is defo gonna be in #3 confirms that certain actors' characters will definitely survive this film. Given that it'd be awesome if some of the big names die, it's better to be sound and not mention who is defo not gonna get killed off.

Any cast list will contain spoilers. A lot of the actors won't be around come the closing credits of Expendables 2 so to read that an actor is returning means that there will never be any chance of them dieing in part 2 and as such could ruin a lot of the tension.

In fairness, if you haven't seen the second (or first) films, you probably shouldn't be reading a thread talking about a future third film. Change the thread title maybe to include 'possible spoilers', but otherwise common sense should apply when reading a thread with obvious spoiler-landmines.

And at least 1 of the spoilered names isn't in the second film :p

But the second film hasn't been released yet.... None of us should be here?!

    Oh haven't we seen it??
    *wiggles eyebrows*

    No. No I haven't.

But blame Avi Lerner, he's the one flapping his mouth off about casting for another sequel before his first has even hit the cinematrons.

Oh and on the subject of cast members dying - did anyone from #1 bite the big one? I'm not sure they did, bar dozens of grunts & the main bad guy.

Eric Roberts was a significant death, in fairness.

    Spoilers! :p

I meant of the promoted, main cast - Roberts was the chief bad guy and might as well had 'will die in the final act' tattooed on his forehead. I don't actually think any of the A-listers died.

Still baffled at the positive feedback The Expendables get. Such a disaster of a film that completely failed to emulate the charming ultraviolent lunacy of the 1980s. To suggest that it went over someone's head is borderline personal abuse :pac:

Pretty sure The Losers and The A-Team came out the same year as the first one too? Both much more fun & enjoyable films imho.

80's and early to mid 90s action movies are my specialty. They contained ingredients which you don't get anymore in action movies; OTT violence, brutal dialogue, hammy acting, not-so-subtle hints of America making up for it's Vietnam loss and drowning in it's gung-ho imagery, Eurotrash villains, action stars bizzarely all oiled up to make their muscles shine, but had that certain charm to them because they were so daft.

Terrible movies, for the most part, but always entertaining in a strange way. Except Arnie's movies in the 80's, they were masterpieces :p

I thought The Expendables was a perfect opportunity to cash in on that market of action movies they didn't make anymore, replaced by "gritty" and "dark" movies that took themselves too seriously. Especially after how well Rambo 4 went down, which was one of the most enjoyable films I saw in the cinema despite it being a terrible movie from a critical standpoint.

Pity The Expendables turned out to be utter shìte and was rather misleadingly advertised to have Arnie and Willis in substantial roles.

I'm still going to watch the new one, though. Primarily to see Arnie again, even if his part isn't going to be much :pac:

I wouldn't worry about spoilering deaths tbh. In something like this would you be *that* surprised to see that someone miraculously escaped certain death in order to feature in a sequel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 224 ✭✭Giggernaut

I recently re-watched the first Expendables and it was poor. I remember the 80's action movies of my youth being cheesey, charming,OTT , one liner-tastic starring a leading current A-List action hero.

Time has redefined the action hero down a tier or two but I was disappointed.
I agree with the previous poster that the A-Team and the Losers were both more enjoyable when compared with the Expendables.

I did like Con Air so Im hoping a change from Stallone to West will improve things but I think Stallone co-wrote so I'll maintain my reservations!

Saying that I'll probably go see it if only to see Arnold and Van Damme.
    Fingers crossed!! ;)

Yet he was killed off in No.2 so unless this is some sort of flashback thing, which I doubt, then I'd be curious to see how they tie him into the 3rd again.

Would have to be his twin, surely:D

That would give the character some serious Impact

Willis' CV in 2013 has been pretty shocking really, taking (presumably) fat pay-cheques for appearing in some ropey films. With sleepwalking performances to match. At least other A-list pay-cheque junkies like Nicholas Cage bring a bit of hammy charisma & insanity, Willis doesn't seem like he's bothered anymore; his sulking during the various PR junkets doesn't say much about his professionalism either. The Expendables films may not have lived up to their potential, but it's strange to see him drop out of something that at least maintained a sense of goodwill with his audience.

Imagine being wealthy enough that you can walk away from $750,000 a day for four days work, because they won't give you an extra $250,000 a day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,469 ✭✭✭✭GTR63

Ronda Rousey is in this too(she is the UFC's Womens Bantamweight Champion).
Is Seagal confirmed, I imagine his demands would be bruce willis like, less money more god I am great aren't I?
Don't know how they'd manage it but something like a Robocop cameo would be just awesome.

Willis can act when he wants, 12 Monkeys etc but yeah he's been phoning it in for years, he just looks utterly bored in everything he's in these days, he even looks like he's the exact same character. Looper was probably the only film lately where he even looked like he was trying.
