Lego Curiosity Mars Rover?

I note that Lego have not produced a model of the NASA Curiosity rover that successfully landed on Mars last week.:(

This is a disappointment as Lego did produce a beautiful Technic version of the Mars Rovers Spirit and Opportunity that landed in 2004 (and of course of the two, Opportunity is still going strong after an amazing 8 years!:)). Lego have also produced models of the Space Shuttle and other space vehicles so I would urge them to reconsider their lack of a Curiosity rover.

I think that a Lego model of Curiosity, perhaps both a simple one and an advanced Technic version, would be big sellers for the company and would cast them in a very good light with respect to encouraging children to develop an interest in science and astronomy. It's a win-win situation in my view.

Meanwhile, a chap called Stephen Pakbaz who works an an engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has produced his own Lego version of the Curiosity rover and has also got building instructions for this. His model is featured in the pic below:

Interestingly I came across a fan-made model of Curiosity a few days ago on Lego Cuusoo (the company's crowd-sourcing project, for anyone not familiar with the concept). The model is here:

    http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/3431

It currently stands at 3,723 votes. If that figure reaches 10,000 then it will reach review stage and be considered for development. To date only three models have become realities via Cuusoo (though it is in its infancy): Shinkai 6500, Hayabusa, and Minecraft. In the meantime, the creator of the Curiosity model has made a parts list and building instructions available (via Lego Digital Designer), which can be found in the link above.

I saw that too, it's great! It's a bit of a pain to put the parts list together though - I've been to 2 bricklink suppliers and still have 11 part types to get. It looks a great model!

There's another one doing the rounds using Mindstorms stuff:
