What will we see? Possibly Kate Bush? Adele? Shakin' Stevens?

The 30th Olympiad reaches a spectacular conclusion in the traditional closing ceremony, live from the Olympic Stadium in the East End of London. After 16 days of tense and exciting competition that will live long in the memory, the athletes can now relax as their achievements are recognised and celebrated in spectacular fashion.

Beginning at 9.00pm, and featuring more than 4,000 performers - including 3,500 volunteers - the show is entitled A Symphony of British Music, and celebrates one of the nation's greatest cultural exports over the past 50 years. Produced by artistic designer Kim Gavin, with music direction by 007 composer David Arnold, the performance is rumoured to feature appearances by chart stars past and present, and although specific details are being kept strictly under wraps, names being mentioned include Adele, Take That, the Who, One Direction and the Spice Girls.

The concert is followed by the appearance of the athletes who say their farewells en masse, not divided by country, a way of bringing the competitors together as `one nation'. London mayor Boris Johnson then takes the stage for the official handover to Rio de Janeiro, hosts of the 2016 Olympic Games, before the chairman of the International Olympic Committee declares the Games closed and the flame is extinguished.

Jaysus, WM - could you not wait until the Weekend before telling us it's coming to an end?

This is like having 'Back to School' adverts in the middle of June :(:D

Keep it fairly simple, with the athletes having their final limelight, instead of more patronising BS like in the Opening Ceremony.

George Michael let slip that he is performing at the closing ceremony.

Meanwhile, Andrew Ridgeley sits patiently by the phone.

I'm pretty sure that's on the Red Button alright.

There was talk of Pink Floyd (well the remaining parts) but they've dismissed that.

Spice Girls, George Michael, Brian May, the Pet Shop Boys, Jessie J, Annie Lennox, Tinie Tempah so far are confirmed

I dont think Gary Barlow would or should perform imo so soon after the death of his child so maybe no to Take That then

Its on on a Sunday night in Hyde park. What he means is he'll be hanging around in th ebushes and the Olympics wont get in the way of his regular schedule.

I for one welcome the end of this sporting pain in the arse.

I am looking forward to BBC 1 returning to normal next week.

That's the Closing Concert in Hyde Park. The coverage of the Closing Ceremony at the stadium will probably cut to the Blur gig for 1 one or 2 key songs.

For all those viewers out there who want the best sound quality from the closing ceremony I highly recommend BBC1 or BBC1 HD for the evening.
During the opening ceremony we channel hopped between RTE2 HD and the Beeb, and the sound quality was soo much better on BBC1.

    I don't know why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

What I discovered was that the non commentary coverage on the red button sounded noticeably better.

Anyway talk of 3,000 performers in the stadium tonight.

Fair play to the Brits all the same.. They did a good job on D'Olympics... well except for that boxing decision with Anthony Ogogo.. I think it's probably the first time I ever cheered on a British athlete as well, I suppose their Jessica Ennis fairytale was similar to our Katie Taylor fairytale.

    Noswaith dda!

Not showing any favouritism whatsoever, but it truly has been a damn fine Olympics!

Let's hope the closing ceremony is equally fitting.

It will be hard to top Daniel Craig and the queen jumping out of the plane, but please no more of that NHS/Industrial Revolution/Mary Poppins shyte. Shouldn't at least some of the opening and closing ceremonies be about sport itself?

Is it just me or is having someone smoking a cigar at the closing ceremony of the biggest sporting event for 4 years a bit silly?

This is a lot more "artsey" than the opening ceremony so far, might change over to the golf, but will wait to see the end of the paper first.

The sound on RTÉ (both over Satellite and SaorView) is terrible compared to BBC (not mentioning George Hamilton)
