    THE WIRE

Working my way through The Wire at them moment, so of the ones I've seen:

    Oz
    Six Feet Under
    Treme
Deadwood + The Sopranos + Boardwalk Empire
    Band of Brothers
    Game of Thrones

Though Treme/Boardwalk/Game of Thrones aren't finished yet, so perhaps I'd put them differently when they do end.

i wouldn't vote on any current shows, as i would find it unfair to judge shows that aren't even halfway through their runs, as fantastic as Game of Thrones has been so far, its a bit unfair putting it up against The Wire or Sopranos,

or Band of Brothers which got my vote, purely on the basis that its a show i would watch at any time, i would re-watch other shows also but ive already watched BoB around 7 or 8 times, its just a fantastic show from the first to the last minute,

but you know this will be a battle between The Wire and The Sopranos, with The Wire the most likely winner,

also im surprised theres no love for entourage so far, also no nomination for The Pacific

damn HBO have made some great shows :)

**** the wire so. Deadwood, obviously.

    For me its The Sopranos...

closely followed by Game of Thrones....

    closely followed by Boardwalk Empire....

closely followed by Band of Brothers.

hmmm there is just too many to chose

Rome for me. But Band of Brothers is a close second.

I haven't seen a lot of the shows in the poll though.

My overall favourite is The Wire, but as it happens there are three cancelled before their time that I believe *may* have eclipsed it; Carnivàle, Deadwood and Luck. Also, no Treme?

The Wire for me...all time favourite for moi, 5-0, 5-0!

Luck looked like it could have been a great show before the lefties came in and ruined the fun because a few horses died

    The Larry Sanders Show

An absolute triumph, which kinda flies under the radar here on Boards.

Essentially a show about a show, it's a caustic showbiz satire, centred round a chronically insecure talk-show host Larry Sanders (Garry Shandling), his acerbic and over-protective producer Artie (Rip Torn) & his comically creepy, utterly talentless on-air sidekick Hank 'Hey-Now' Kingsley, brilliantly portrayed by Jeffrey Tambor.

The show deployed a clever device, splitting the action between realistic 'on-air' interviews with Hollywood A-listers, before shifting to daringly twisted backstage scenes - often featuring those same celebs playing severely dysfunctional slimeball versions of themselves. The guest appearances are testament to how highly it was regarded - Seinfeld, John Stewart, Jim Carrey, Letterman, Warren Beatty, Leno and too many others to mention.

It established HBO's creative credentials, profoundly influenced Seinfeld, Curb & Extras and acted as a springboard for a fairly hefty array of talent - Judd Apatow, Bob Odenkirk & Jeremy Piven amongst them.

89 episodes of goodness await those who seek it out, high quality & very funny stuff - can't recommend it highly enough.

PS - The Wire, Deadwood & The Sopranos are as good as TV drama gets imo.

The wire is the best with the sopranos second.

Boardwalk Empire is one of the best things on TV at the moment but is only 2 seasons in. If it continues in the same vein as it has started it could become a classic

    Aha hang on!
No mention of Big Love http://www.hbo.com/big-love

Sex and the City got a vote ???

The Wire, Sopranos and Carnivale. Carnivale really needed an ending but was so good I'l forgive it.

Treme is brilliant. Great cast and location of post Katrina New Orleans is a beautiful backdrop. I've spent a bit of time there and they capture it so well. Very real and the characters bring some great dialogue to the screen. The music alone is even worth watching it for. Love the theme tune.

The Wire wins hands down for me

GoT for its bold storytelling and standout characters. Honourable mentions to The Wire and Rome. (The latter largely for Atia and Pullo - two unforgettable performances.)

    Top Five
    1. Oz
    2. Game Of Thrones
    3. Deadwood
    4. The Wire
    5. The Sopranos
    Bottom Five
    1. Boardwalk Empire
    2. Curb Your Enthusiasm

The Sopranos for me. It's the series that started it all. Complete game-changing and ground-breaking show and by far the best characters in any drama ever (for me).

I assume he means one of the first hour long dramas to hit the mainstream from a Premium cable network, just behind Oz.

Oz, The Wire, Game of Throne and The Sopranos are all equally compelling television...

You forgot The Corner- the older, vastly better written/acted/directed predecessor of that overrated Wire stuff.

    Top 3 for me

    1- The Sopranos
    2- Oz
3- The Corner (The Corner could well rank higher only it was only on for one series. Unbelieveable how superior it is to The Wire yet hardly anyone has seen it)

Have not seen the rest in full to make a judgement, although the episodes of Boardwalk I have seen look like another classic, need to see it in full.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

Eastbound and Down deserves to be in the list as the best HBO comedy.

their both there, i dont understand why entourage has so few votes, suppose i voted Band of Brothers myself,

it really goes to show its been a while since HBO have outdone themselves with the 3 leading shows all finished for years, boardwalk empire is OK i think Game of Thrones is be far the best show on HBO currently,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,622 ✭✭✭El Tarangu

    Oz.

I have to say that I also didn't see what all the fuss was about with The Wire. Don't get me wrong, Season One and Five were excellent, but for a gritty crime drama,
McNulty's invented serial killer and Hamsterdam
stretched my suspension of disbelief to breaking-point.

And before anyone says "but Oz had surrealist elements too" - yes, but Oz had them from the get-go.

The Sopranos for me anyway. The Wire was amazing but I have watched The Sopranos a few times through and I will probably watch it a few times more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭kevohmsford

John Adams, Eastbound and Down, and Generation Kill should be on the list. Great shows.

Poll is a travesty and farcical!....The Wire????

I do love Rome but The Wire is a far greater show. Boardwalk Empire is fine but I'm not particularly hyped to even see a third season. But I watched The Wire over the course of four weeks and would happily sit down to watch it again. The poll is not a travesty, it would be a travesty if Sex and the City was in the lead. :pac:

Although it does look like I should get around to watching Oz soon. But I have so little time.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,085 ✭✭✭meoklmrk91

Oh that list just gives me so much to get through. No love for Big Love, highly underrated IMHO. And game of thrones is highly overrated. I really can't choose, because I havent seen enough. Big love is the only HBO series I have finished out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,819 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

Iv not seen Oz or G.o.T
Sopranos wasn't bad but I didn't watch it every week.
B.Empire is great, hope it carries on.

For me it's The Sopranos and by some considerable distance. For my tastes, the best TV series ever made. Just superb from beginning to end.

    Game of Thrones
    Boardwalk Empire
    The Corner

Finally finished watching all seasons of The Sopranos. Absolutely fantastic show, between the cast, the writing, the acting, and the style. Never have I seen a show that would leave you horrified one minute, then make you laugh out loud the next. Some scenes are actually shocking, and you'd question Tony's motivations at times. But then Paulie or Junior would come on-screen and come out with one of their classic quotes.

I'm definitely in the category that loved the final scene of the show. Unfortunately, I had seen the last scene years ago when it was first broadcast stupidly, when I had never seen an episode before in my life and wanted to see what the big deal was with this shock ending. So I knew what was coming, but would have loved to of seen it for the first time wondering what was going to happen.

Hard to believe, yet comforting in a sense that there is a show as good as, if not better than it (The Wire) so will be giving that a watch fairly prompt. There's also a good read here, looking back on The Sopranos five years ago.
