    - Rough milage per year - 12 to 20k.
    - No family.
    - No car to trade.
    - 27 Male.

You might fall into the Golf club so.

Well petrol is more than likely the route to go with your millage

Other than that we need to know what sort of body type you want?

Like are you thinking along the lines of a coupe or a saloon. If you transport bulky items then a coupe with a small boot won't suit, a saloon or even a hatch might be more suitable in this case. The really depends on your lifestyle and how often you might carry a crowd in the car

Does engine size, tax, insurance etc matter to you?

Cheap tax and insurance would be nice, but I dont want to drive a tiny feeble car either.

Im open to saloon, hatch or coupe really. Although not sure I like the look of hatchbacks that much.

20000 miles a year is a fair bit, I'd get diesel if I was doing that much

    Kia pro ceed or something

Bog standard Golf, or a TDI if you're doing lots of miles. Cheap tax and insurance and reliable and easy to get parts etc etc. If you're not into the hatch, you could get a diesel passat. Your mileage estimate might be a bit high, in which case I would choose petrol.

    That would be sore.... :pac::pac::pac:

OP if tax isn't an issue, why not go for something big?

Would something like this float your boat? Not overly costly to run either, tax aside :)

Nice motor, but at circa €1700 tax? I'm getting the feeling that the OP wants something slightly smaller. Maybe an x-type or a 318?

Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi you'll probably get at least a 2008 for your budget. Reliable economical and comfortable you can't really go wrong.

    An accord or something

For a young guy at least a vrs would be a better buy and in budget.

If it was me I would look in a Mondeo ST. Motortax is a little high but they are well specced, fairly reliable and a nice drive.

Tax on that would be far too high, I wouldnt want to go any higher then 1.9 engine and even that is pushing what I want to be paying on tax to be honest.

Tsi has a turbo? For your budget you'd get a very nice car and a 1.4 Skoda isn't one.

1.4tsi is a turbo charged petrol engine...about 40hp more than the old 1.4....but I don't think it was available on the Octavia before 2009

    Opel Astra?

27 and no kids then I would be looking at a coupe. Something along the lines of this:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201221208297979

Plenty of time later in life when you are married with kids for a mundane family hatchback or saloon.

Surely an Mazda 6 MPS would fall into that budget???!!!!
Young, petrol or diesel bit of poke you know you want to!

Where is the bloke that owns that?

07, 1.4 TSI Golf, in silver.

Can you live with a "C" reg? Spec might be basic enough but it's a win on the poke/tax ratio! Mileage is also low.

Whats a good 08 car to get to take advantage of new tax rates for 08 cars.

Now I might get stuffed for suggesting this but :D

But if I was you, with your budget and age I'd be going going for a mk5 golf gti

you should be well able to buy a 2006 one for around 7000/8000

    here's a nice example

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3318937

Life is to short for driving Skodas IMO

but if you have no interest in cars and just use a car to get from A to B as cheaply as possibly Then a 1.9 tdi Skoda is the way to go.

Get yourself a 1.9 Octavia. Sure judging from your other posts that's all you'll ever need

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    There are lots of factors

    Mileage per year
    Purchase price
What the particular model is like to drive
    Tax
    Fuel consumption

What you can actually afford etc

I think there's great value in older 6s in 1.8 petrol. Low purchase price means more led over for other things and lower depreciation when you sell

Not sure what this means?, what price you think is fair for a good condition 08 1.8 petrol, with about 70k miles on it.

He is suggesting that despite the higher tax rate for the 1.8, you'll save upfront compared to the post 08 model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I meant 05-07 1.8s, they can be got for half the price of an 08 diesel

Then again I'm not saying don't buy a newer diesel, just do your sums and figure out what you can afford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭PassMoz

So your saying get a 1.8 petrol? You really need to be more clear

I can afford either, but I want to get the best deal.

    How muh can you spend?
How much milege do you do annually?
How long do you see yourself keeping the car for?
