    Hey guys,
My mother is about to undergo a knee replacement. While researching I heard about a new procedure that is being used in Shanakiel.
    http://thecork.ie/2011/01/12/shanakiel-hospital-offers-new-knee-procedure/

This looks to be very interesting, but it is only running since 2010. I am wondering is there anyone out there that has had experience with this or knows anyone that has undergone the surgery there.

    cheers....

The procedure is called Compartmental Resurfacing. Basically the knee has 3 compartments, and previously when there was no cartilage left in one or two compartments the only option was a complete knee replacement. With this procedure patients who only need treatment for one or two compartments can avoid the major surgery involved in a total knee replacement. A metal cap is inserted onto the part of the joint that is missing cartilage to take its place and absorb the impacts and stresses placed on the joint.

Due to the after-effects of an accident I've known for some time that I will require at least one knee replacement in a few years, with a strong possibility of needing the other one done as well. When I spoke to my orthopaedic surgeon recently after I first heard about compartmental resurfacing (which I can't have as it turns out I need full knee replacements due to all three compartments being buggered), he told me that the results from the procedure haven't been as good as was initially expected. The posters in this forum certainly suggest that it's not as good as it sounds (this is the product they were specifically referring to).

    I hope that helps. :)
