Steam sale survivors thread

So, brothers, the sale is done. Lots of pain and loses during these last weeks. Let's honor all who did not survived it ( killed by wife's, girlfriends, parents, accountants ).

So now lads, the rule of steam sale was always: " buy games for collection and god forbid never play them ". So who is breaking this rule and playing? :D

So I started of Dead island, which was surprisingly fun, though it was more of a summer movie experience for me. I doubt I will come back to it, unless lads will want some coop fun.
Got sins of solar empire next. Was dissapointed by the lack of campaingn, but after few hours of learning the ropes and giving it a go I did realised it can be a great time sink, at 2gb space it can sit quietly on my disc for when I am bored or want something different.
Next was tropico 4. Did all the training missions. Started first mission and I it is a fun game, but it really lacks one thing for me: more detailed and more direct control. By the middle of the game I lost count and trace of where stuff is coming, what brings profit and what do I need for expansion. It felt more of a gamble then planing of your economy. Saying all this I will still be playing it and keep it on my drive.
Civilisation 5. Where do I start here. I did few hours of it today and I realised how I love civilisation 4. The only thing that I like about civ 5 it's updated interface and better graphics. Other then that Civ 4 is just waaaaaaay better package. Will still give if more time, but I am happy I bought it on sale and not for full price. Thanks god I did not go for that expansion.
DayZ. I never played much arma, so getting the basics was hard enough. I can see it being fun and interesting, but I will need way more time to get in to it. My last experience was: running away from a mob of zombies. Hiding in some building, where I found AK. All was fun and good, but then I found some players corpse so I just went to look if something left on him. Corpse had some very good weapon and lots of supplies, I was quite exited, but then while I was collecting stuff someone sneaked on me and put a bullet in my head... " you are dead " screen. Lovely.
Red orchestra 2. Now that's going to be something really fun. Just played few games and I died A LOT. I will deffo sink some time in to this. Has that feel of war in it. Headless chicken running gets you killed. No Cod style, lovely.

So what did you learned so far about games you bought? Any regrets? Any lovely discoveries?

I bought a few games during the sale and the one I really wanted to get stuck into was Super Meat Boy. I installed it on my MacBook Air and thought it would run fine. Turns out that Super Meat Boy on the Mac is not compatible with the Xbox 360 controller. There is a post on the official blog to say that they are sorry but it is an bug that they cannot fix.

Disappointed with that because I have to boot into Windows if I want to play it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭YouSavedMyLife

Bought tonnes of games, 17 hours put into the Binding of Isaac, 11 hours into Max Payne and 7 into Age of Empires Collection. The others are installed and not played, some not yet installed. Funny that the cheapest game i bought i have played the most, and Age of Empires being a game i have played before

Finished Max Payne tonight on Hard difficulty. Decent game, but i was expecting some exciting plot twist which never came. Abit of a let down. Only reason i finished it as fast as i did was to regain the 30gigs it was taking up on my SSD, hah.

Oh and 3 hours into Europa Universalis III. Thats 3 hours of not knowning what the **** i am doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Max Payne is 30gb?!?! Holy ****. How long was it btw? Looks like a lot for a summer movie type game.

That some time squizzed out of binding of Isaac. I got Xbox controller now so I need to play it again. Playing it with keyboard is a pain in a hole

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Harps

Max Payne 3 has a cut scene every 30 seconds so I'm guessing that's where the 30gb comes from, well worth playing though

I have a 25gb a month data limit which is a serious pain now with all my games sitting there waiting to be downloaded. Tried the two smallest games first, Binding of Isaac and Plants vs. Zombies, both seem decent enough but haven't spent more than 2 hours on each. Found it impossible to beat the first level in Isaac and Plants vs Zombies seemed a bit too easy

Next, San Andreas, took me ages to get the controls set up for a joypad but enjoying it so far, not played it since way back when it was released so some good nostalgia and it hasn't ages badly at all.

Borderlands GotY currently at 56% for a 12.4gb download, really eating into my monthly data so doubt I'll be trying anything else until next month.

At the start I didn't think I'd buy much a I already had plenty of games from previous sales, but as it took hold I ended up buying quite a few.

I've installed Driver: San Francisco and have been playing that the last few days. It's a good antidote to the hectic pace of work at the moment.

Also bought Batman: Arkham City but started Arkham Asylum which I've had for a few months but never played. Installed that and have been playing it on and off.

Briefly installed DCS: Black Shark and Renegade Ops but uninstalled them. I'll give them more time when I have it.

    Altogether I stupidly bought:

Age of Empires III: Complete Collection
    Alan Wake
    Assassins Creed Brotherhood
    Batman Arkham City
    Crysis 2 Maximum Edition
    DCS: Black Shark
    Dead Island
    Dead Space 2
    Dear Esther
    Driver: San Francisco
    Far Cry 2
    L.A. Noire
    R.U.S.E.
    Red Orchestra 2
    Renegade Ops
    Splinter Cell: Conviction
    Train Simulator 2012
    Trine 2

Damn that was pretty stupid. I have loads of unplayed previous sale games.

Bless me Father for I have steamed:
    Magicka
    Monkey Island
    Dead Island
    Alan Wake
    MW3
    Trine2
and finally Skyrim (the theme tune along in worth the price.)

    Playing Crysis, funzies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

Played two of my purchases properly so far.

Bulletstorm: 8/10. Great fun to play, immature humour, lots of swearing, looks great, inventive weapons and kill system. On the con side, it's short enough, and while the storyline keeps things ticking, it's a bit of a Dan Brown. Some twists, but pretty predictable. Then again, it never claims to be a novel, just a fun shooter. And for that, it's deadly.

Sins of a Solar Empire - Trinity. Bit disappointed in the lack of a campaign. Skirmish only, it seems - single player wise. Nice slow RTS though, deep, lots of strategic options. Perhaps a bit too slow though. Not made up my mind on this one.

Next through the ringer... Dear Esther. Need a bit of a comedown after Bulletstorm.

I may have gone a little overboard, so much so, one of my friends decided to make a little scrapbook if you will.

Contrary to the photo, I'm not actually british.
    It's an in joke

    Euro's, pounds, and dollars.
    What a multi-cultural image!

Haven't played any of my purchases yet.

Played nothing yet other than a bit of Killing Floor. That's more down to being stuck with over time than anything else though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

Have downloaded a few. Of thsoe I've played

Star Wars Force Unleashed 1 , cleared on xbox, having a go at PC, stupid mindless fun, love it.

Rome Total war - From the big total war pack, have had a few skirmishes and then some games with Da. Had played before on Da's PC, was addicted to original Shogun, look forward to playing these.

Splinter Cell Conviction - such a bargain, really enjoying it so far and look forward to playing some more :)

Might get through the single player focused games first and get them cleared, but in all honesty its just building a library for a rainy day.

The likes of Skyrim, Fallout 3 etc all on my library, never been downloaded

I love that game. It's even more fun if you got few friends on vent when playing it. Some crack. It might sound crazy, but I prefer killing floor to left4dead series.

"yes, one in each hand!" :D

I'd agree with the killing floor vs left4dead. I find it much more enjoyable.
The lever action rifle is one of the most satisfying guns in a game I've ever used :D

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

I too prefer Killing Floor to Left4Dead. The guns feel more solid and there's a general sense of satisfaction taking down zombies with them. With Left 4 Dead not so much.

Anywho... I bought a few games but I have no intention of playing them for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,912 ✭✭✭SeantheMan

The fun in L4D2 is being a zombie, and executing a well co-ordinated attacked and taking out a whole team :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

    Survived at just spending €10 on the GTA Collection;

    GTA
    GTA 2
    GTA III
    GTA: Vice City
    GTA: San Andreas
    GTA IV
GTA IV: Episodes From Liberty City

Some bargain! Decided to stop at that, probably because the opening months of the new college term would be ruined otherwise, despite Dead Space 1 & 2 lurking over me like a hand full of sweets to a 7 year old.

Only got The Penumbra Collection, Warhammer 40k:I collection, and a friend gifted me Bastion.

Thank the lords for being having a **** computer.

Spent €27.01 on myself and bought Alan Wake Franchise for 2 friends @ €8.99, so total was €44.99

Got: Alan Wake Franchise (Have it for XBox & completed it but consoles don't last forever and I wanted a permanent copy)

Indie Developer Bundle (for Defcon & Uplink)

Max Payne 1 & 2 (Great games when I played them years ago & I'm willing to wait for the next sale for part 3 to come down further in price. €25 seemed excessive when I saw the $ & £ prices.)

I'm annoyed cos I meant to get Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for €5.99 but mistakenly thought the sale was on until last night. Oh well, there's always next time & it's only €4 extra if I get bored.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭Dunnie1982

    I bought a few, I didn't go too crazy:
    GTA Collection
    Hitman Collection
    Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box
    Magicka Collection
    Terraria
    Prince of Persia Collection
    Total War Mega Pack

All in all it was only around €50, if I was to have bought them outside the sale it would have costed me a fortune. I forgot to get Sim City 4 & Settlers 7.

This thread is not about what you bought, but what you bought, then played! ;)

    On topic:
I forgot to mention that I played trine 1 too. I have to say its a lot of fun. A very very estetocly beatifull game too. I heard trine 2 is even better. Need to finish 1 first now! :)

I've played most of them except a few Prince of Persias, Rome Total War(Owned it before & wanted to try the others), GTA 4 & GTA Episodes from Liberty City. mostly because I think I may be coming near my monthly download limit and will get them next month. I have over 40 hours put into Terraria already . The last Prince of Persia game I had played was on the Snes, Sands of Time is enjoyable although I had to use Xpadder to get the control system right.

Managed to get a nice few games just before the sale (thank you, Humble Bundle), so survived this sale with zero games bought :D

    Sigh...

    RAGE
    Bulletstorm
Oblivion Game of the Year Deluxe
    Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
    Crysis Maximum Edition Bundle
    Amanita Bundle
    The Witcher 2
    The Witcher: Enhanced Edition (ROW)
    Plants vs. Zombies
    Alan Wake Bundle (Summer 2012)
    Trine 2
    Skyrim
Age of Empires Online - Starter Pack DLC Unlock
    Introversion Complete Pack (March 2012)
    Unreal Deal

Haven't totalled it up yet, but it ain't gonna be pretty!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

i spent all day playing tropico 4! ( after work, cut lawn, playing with dog etc )

i cant believe how addictive it got! :D What a fun game. the more i play it, the more i like it. first mission is done! 7 hours of fun! 19 more to go! this goes in to my "good steam purchases" shelf!

how do you work out what you have spent besides going to your CC statement?

edit: found out and my sum total is €134.43, I got some of the games cheaper as I was in England for most of the sale

You should have got emails after each purchase, so you can just scan through them and add it up.
Or you could freak yourself out by looking here and seeing how much your account is worth in total: (I'm currently at $832.46!!!!)
    Steam Calculator

    In the sales I got:
    ARMA 2
DoubleFine collection (Psychonauts, Stacking & Costume Quest)
    SW:KOTOR
    Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
    Tales of Monkey Island Pack
    The Walking Dead

    Total: €47.20

Only played a few minutes of Day Z (gonna need a lot more time invested there I think), finished Episode 1 of Monkey Island, and just finished up Episode 1 of The Walking Dead. Walking Dead is very good; I'd heard lots of good reviews but was still surprised by my attachment to some of the characters, can't wait to play through the rest.

Anyone else having any problems with download speed today? Trying to get Borderlands finished (12.4gb) and I'm struggling to break 30KB/s, my peak rate for the past half an hour is 44.2KB/s! Never going to play it at this rate, I tried changing server but no difference

As for games I have played, I finally got San Andreas playable with xpadder after about 3 hours of messing with the controls, still only doing the intro missions. Gave Binding of Isaac a proper try earlier as well but still can't seem to beat the first level, haven't even got past Caves II yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,578 ✭✭✭✭Turtwig

Since the sale I've installed and played the following.

    Batman Arkham City < 1hour. :
    GFWL made me lose patience.

    Arma II CO < 1 hour :
Just testing the game editor again. Love Arma but need another week or so before I've everything set up properly for the game. Then I might consider trying DayZ. Not yet though.

    Sins of a Solar Empire : Trinity. <8hrs. :
Absolutely adore this game. Played just two games, the second one is still on going. Watching the AI in action is just amazing, it's the kind of game you'd happily watch the battles on screen all day.
Slight annoyance in that I can't launch it via steam without a game crash have to launch it directly from its own installation folder. :(

    Splinter Cell: Conviction <20hrs :
Fantastic game. At first I was a bit disappointed with how the game seemed to be forcing me to kill folks. Granted there are some forced kills in the game, but they were in every Splinter Cell and like every SC game the real challenge is in sneaking about unnoticed. Just like in Chaos Theory enemies come from areas you snuck past too, doubling the tension the further you sneak into the level without being spotted. Amazing game. Killing is so much fun too.
Sam Fisher is more of a Jack Bauer character but I think the game nailed both the Stealth aspect and the casual-ish predator style killer game as well.
Really, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much. It's not Chaos Theory, but it's a might fine crafted game -game wise! Uplay's save feature isn't reliable at all so I initially completed the game in one sitting, due to having to start over twice. Yep, just like all SCs the game is rather short but very well worth the experience.

Need for Speed : Hot Pursuit < 24 hours.
Exhilerating game. The online multiplayer mode is just fantastic fun. Single player is good too but online is where it's at. Hot Pursuit with a couple of friends and the hours just fizz by. The sense of speed in the game is unreal, the scenery is gorgeous and the thrill of chase/hunt is blood pumping. Between this and Splinter Cell I'm delighted with the steam sale both games just make my heart go that little bit faster when I'm playing them.

Prince of Persia : Sands of Time < 3hours.
Great little platformer/avoid the traps game. The narrator Prince is a tad annoying but the game has aged very well.

    Worms Reloaded <1hr.
Looks nice in HD but I still think Armageddon and WWP is going to be most I'll ever get out of worms.

    Frozen Synapse <1hr (That can't be right!?)
Great little concept but still haven't been able to log in online so stuck with single player for now. Had really hoped to play it with friends online as we were learning the ropes. (I find that for some games being total noobs and playing privately is sheer fun that you can't experience once at least one member of the party become adept at a game.)

    Unreal Tournament <1hr.
Instagib. Epics! I loved this game so much.

    Assassins Creed II. <6hrs
This one is problematic. I think it's my internet settings but like SC the game just point blank refuses to save for me at times. Or worse, overwrite existing saves. Was thrilling fun, especially my first view of the entire city of Florence from a height and the dive, oh! the dive, into the river. So beautiful. So, so beautiful.

    Terraria <2hrs.
This is very good fun. Grab some friends and play it with them.

Lets see in the order I bought them:-

AC Revelations - not installed yet
Bioshock 2 - not installed yet
Two Worlds 2 - Already have TW1 and need to play that first
Batman Arkham City - well into Asylum but need to finish it before moving on to this
Gothic 3 - loved Gothic 1, playing Gothic 2 so wanted this as I believe it's a perfectly playable game now with patches etc. I have the original box so this falls into the "nice to have on steam" list.
    Bastion - not installed yet
X: Beyond the frontier/X2 the Threat - yet another set of games I already owned on disc gathering dust somewhere. Who knows when I will play them but it's the idea of playing them that counts :)
Fable the Lost Chapters - one I own on disc and never played. I have started this and looks fun. Very english.
AC, AC 2 Deluxe Edition, AC Brotherhood - they went cheap offering me a good opportunity to have all of the AC series on PC. I will get around to these at some point but not yet.
Thief Bundle - I own all of these already so more for the "nice to have on steam" list.
Splinter Cell Conviction - not installed yet. Enjoyed the others but have yet to complete Chaos Theory.
Driver San Fran - started this and seems fun with some seriously skiddy driving machanics.

    Total damage - €72.84

After all that I sat down the other night and decided to restart Gothic 2 which I bought from gog. I was only an hour or so into it when I stopped a few months back and will probably be playing that now for the foreseeable. Loving it.

    http://www.steamcalculator.com/faq.php?id=2#id-2

It's current value since it'd have no idea what price you bought it at since that info isn't available except to you when you're logged into Steam

Make sure your profile is public. It can't access your Community profile otherwise to check how many games you have.

    Mine: $1321.47 / €1207.97 / £939.87

Really shows the $1=€1 pricing Steam has going on. Between Steam sales and indie bundles, if I've spent a tenth of that on games, it'd probably be overestimating it.

There's no need to use the Steam Calculator unless you want to estimate how much you've saved on sales. Everything is in your Steam account.

That doesn't account for keys or gifts though, they just show up as free (if only!). BTW, probably best to block out your Steam name for security so someone doesn't attempt to hack your account.

    Here's how the Sale went for me;

Realises no money in bank account for sale.
Goes mad selling gear in D3 on the Real Money Auction House to fund inevitable purchases.
Builds up €140 over 2 weeks from D3 sales.
Charges €120 worth of games to Credit Card over course of sale.
    Sale Ends.
Tries to extract money from B.net account to paypal and realises not possible.
    Facepalm.
Sees brightside of having tonnes of new games to drown out the outstanding bill.
Plays Tribes Ascend exclusively since which is free to play.
    Double Facepalm.

God damn you Steam Sale, god damn you to Hell!!! :(

You could buy gold and then resell it, You will face a 30% loss but it is better than nothing.

I plan on doing something similar, I now plan to play Diablo until I get items to sell to repay cost of game and steam sale. Any extra money will go towards Xmas sale. Now just to start farming and hopefully get some sellable items
