Daley Thompson and his racist slur

The double Olympic champion, who has been tipped to light the Olympic torch during the opending ceremony on Friday, was criticised by viewers of The One Show.

BBC bosses were forced to apologise after a string of complaints.

Thompson made the gaffe during last Thursday's show when he was shown a photo of a torch bearer with 'Oylmpic torch bearer' tattooed on her arm.

The Decathlon gold-medalist quipped that the tattooer must have been Irish.

He was quickly corrected by presenter Matt Baker that the tattoo had been done in the USA and the presenter apologised to viewers straight away and then again at the end of the show.

A slur that's all too common in the UK from my experience. Disappointing that it's trotted out so easily and I hope he regrets the idiocy of the remark.

That man keep people in jobs and off the dole queues manufacturing joysticks

Anyone else have his games on the Commodore 64

Those games would destroy a joystick quicker then your parents could buy you a new one

I don't know... "Oylmpic" does kind of sound like the "Oirish" pronunciation! Wouldn't get too worked up about it, personally.

I always find it odd when members of minorities - particularly those who have been in the public light and had to break down racist barriers to get there - go on and make remarks like this.

Vijay Singh did something similar about ten years ago when he made a remark that a female player in a pro tournament, "doesn't belong out here" and she was displacing a male competitor. Which is no doubt a remark that was made about Vijay on more than one occasion.

I thought he was dead. There ya go, you learn something new everyday.

I'd say he must be publishing a book or something shortly and just wanted to get a bit of publicity any which way.

I had this for the Spectrum 128K (the poor cousin of the Commodre 64) when I was a teenager. Nearly wore a hole in my right hand (and not in a good way) trying to complete all of the events. Them Atari standard joysticks must have had adamantium shafts too. It took some abuse over the years.

Had it on the Spectum 48K I think. Not as good as Amiga game 'The Acquatic Games' with James Pond / Robocod.
