my friend and I are moving to Dublin in AUgust. we already have work, its more west of dublin. though we prioritize to live close to the "nightlife" and citylife, than to live close to work. We want to rent a place close to temple bar for example but not necessary. we dont even now about the good places yet. . we were thhinking about maybe renting somewhere in dublin 8. any ideas of where to not to live and where there are good nice cozy areas? not necessary to be in dublin 8.

we dont have all the money in the world but we were thinking a fresh place for 1000 monthly :)

i am thankful for all advice!

Try and find somewhere near the Luas tracks. Public transport isn't great here but the luas (tram) is reliable.
Temple bar is more of a touristy place to go. It can be good in small doses but I don't think you'd enjoy it regularly, maybe you would though who knows.
There's endless amounts of places to go and places go in and out of fashion so to speak. Just be weary of Copper Face Jacks ;)

ranelagh is a lovely spot,on the luas line and is within walking distance of the city centre.

You didnt say were in west dublin you are working but if its blanchardstown direction you can get a bus to there with just a ten minute walk from ranelagh

Ranelagh is a great spot - I live there myself. But you said you will be working West Dublin ?

Give us a closer location where you will be working ??

hi, thank you for all the answers.

I will work in Leixlip. Which is far away, but We are used to about 1-1.30h to work and school. we want to live closer to the inner city than work, but if you have any ideas about other places that is closer to leixlip and still close to inner city, with good bus and train -connections , that would be great. We are probably going to sign a 1 year contract for the rent- and as you understand we dont want to pick a place we are not happy about only 1 month after.

We are really looking forward to living in dublin and working there. the town seems interesting and we want to make the best of it. the area that we will be living is what matters most :)

it's a bit of a drive from ranelagh to leixlip but manageable and one thing to your advantage you'll be going against the flow of rush hr traffic going to/from work.

Again I'd highly recommend ranelagh as a place to live!

You can get a train from Connolly station to Leixlip which has 2 stations, one which is near the Intel factory so anywhere around the centre of Dublin could suit you.

yeah there's a few good pubs loads and loads of good restaurants...no tourists.

You cant get the luas from ranelagh to connolly direct. You'd get off at st stephens green and then have maybe a ten minute walk to connoly station(depends on how short your legs are!:))

Bus into town and then train. Just make sure that public transport times are matching your shift times (Thats if you are on shifts and finishing outside the times of public transport ).

And Leixlip is in Kildare not in Dublin West :)

There are plenty of trains and buses into the city centre if you wanted to live along the dart line or out in Dublin 15 which if you lived in Clonsilla, Leixlip would be the next stop on the train. Its about 7 miles and a handy cycle along the canal if the weather is good.

if you could stretch your budget slightly to say 1200 id move to IFSC (http://www.daft.ie/searchrental.daft?id=1223222)- it's 5 minutes walk to Connolly train station, on the luas line and also within walking distance to Temple Bar (15-20 minutes). to be honest as much as I like Ranelagh - it's a bit of a journey from Ranelagh to st stephen's then walk to Connolly (i'd say it's more of a 20 than 10 minutes) and then onto the train to Leixlip.

OK - reality check time. Ranelagh is nowhere near Leixlip and as a Swede coming over here (accustomed to first world public transport as you are) you’re in for a big surprise. Sorry but that’s the reality.

Presume your job (or commute) comes first, life second? If so ease your commute by picking a sensible location in which to live and work out your ‘city life’ after that. Ranelagh in this case may as well be Mars. The reality of that trip is 20 mins to city, 20 mins walk to connect and 30 mins train to be close to work in Leixlip, and that’s if you make all the connections. Utterly unnecessary in my view.

Google or Bing map Leixlip. It’s on the N4/M4 road but if driving consider local traffic when you get there, ultimately it’s no faster than taking a train. So for public transport look at Connolly or Pearse stations in Dublin travelling to Leixlip Louisa Bridge, closest station to Intel (if that’s where you’re heading). See http://www.irishrail.ie/media/DublinMaynooth111.pdf for an idea of timetables.

You don’t want to live near either Connolly or Pearse I’d expect, but anywhere walking 10 minutes or so could be ok. Look at IFSC area behind Connolly for a start. Also look at Drumcondra, it’s the other side of city and a bit further out but a better bet than Ranelagh for daily travel to Leixlip. It’s on the train line for a start (and far nearer airport for a quick trip home).

Otherwise give up on Dublin and look at Leixlip or Maynooth with trips into town (Dublin) when you need to get away for a far better quality of life.

The IFSC is the only good thing going for that area tbh,a 5 minute walk to connolly wouldnt be much of a plus either(and I lived on buckingham street for years so know it well enough)lots of junkies etc...

and like I said the walk time to connolly depends on whether you have short legs or not:pac:

thank you. yes now this is excactly why i needed to post in this forum. The trip from ranelagh-leixlip seems a lot of complicated...

that drumcondra seems interesting. gonna look it up.

about that me being a swede and all, haha, if i didnt missunderstood i think you ment that the town stockholm is small and the train and buses are easy to take? no worries i am used to being in london, i guess this is similar to that?

actually we prioritize life not work, but its almost 50/50. :D

yes IFCS seems nice but if the area surrounding that area is bad then we wuldnt want to live there. and we rlly domt want junkies hanging around every corner when we walk at night!

If you want to live in the city, you could look at Grand Canal Dock. It's about a 10 minute walk from Pearse Station which has a Commuter train service to leixlip.

Grand Canal Dock is a brilliant area, really modern, but rent will be a little more expensive.

if you are working in leixlip. I also recommend living near the train line, think drumcondra would be close enough to town for you.

Hi. I agree with others that you want to be near the train station because it will really make you life easier.

I think Drumcondra is a good option because you are close to the city centre for night life and also Connolly train station - which you need to get to work.

Also, that area has good transport links - Dart, Luas red line, and lots of bus routes. Get some bicycles and you'll be able to move around the city centre very easily.

That area of Dublin is a little bit rougher but it's not that bad as long as you are smart.

    South Circular Road/Rialto maybe?

I loved living in Phibsborough (not rough at all) but it doesn't strike me as being amenable to Leixlip.

I've never had bother in the area. Closest Luas is James St which will take you right next to Connolly station (15-20 mins). Bus routes right onto O'Connell Street which pass by Temple Bar. Thomas St/Meath St would provide for your food shopping needs.

Castleknock probably would be your best bet for convenience to both lives.

    Daft Rentals Castleknock

Irish Rail CastleKnock TimeTable to Leixlip
    (Average 10 minute Journey)

Irish Rail Castleknock Timetable to Dublin City Centre
Click "Later" at bottom, to get Evening times. (Average 25 minute Journey)

    Bus Routes Castleknock

    Castleknock On Google Maps

It wouldn't take a long time to get From Castleknock to Either place.

I don't know what the nightlife there is like, but i'd imagine it's like most Irish towns. Probably a couple of pubs and a nightlcub.

But, as i said, it is only a short trip into Dublin City Centre in the evening. And Short to Leixlip in the Morning and Evening.

I think Grand Canal Dock or the IFSC would be ideal for you - they're walking distance to Pearse and Connolly train stations respectively. They're close enough to the city centre and nightlife, but not too close that it would be very noisey at night etc. I prefer Grand Canal Dock myself - close enough to walk to Ranelagh and Baggot street areas, nice walks along the canal etc.

I'm no expert on commuting by train, but by the look of the timetable the journey from Pearse to Leixlip is 30-40 minutes. You could cut that by moving out into the suburbs a bit, but you'll be sacrificing the city life you want without really making a huge impact on your commuting times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,417 ✭✭✭Archeron

For what its worth, HP in Leixlip has frequent free shuttle buses from both train stations in the area and well worth checking if intel has the same.

To be fair though, it's not really what she's looking for. She specifically wants city life and night life and is willing to sacrifice convenience to get it. Castleknock is a fine place, but I don't think it's quite what she's after. She'll save about 20 minutes off the train journey (and probably a good bit on rent), but I think she's getting the worst of both worlds, not the best of both. She might as well live in Leixlip and not have any commuting time during the week, and travel into Dublin at the weekends, but I think it's the opposite she's after.

If you're working in Leixlip you should definitely try to get a place near the dart line, or with direct access to the dart line via Dublin Bus or Luas. Grand Canal Dock is definitely a good area to live, and if you can get close enough to the Dart Station there you'll be grand getting the commuter train to Leixlip as some other posters pointed out already. Rent will probably be higher but if you're proper party animals you'll perhaps benefit from not having to get taxis home :P

One thing to remind of which is perhaps obvious when moving to any city - public transport and generally getting about takes a bit of getting used to, but more so in Dublin I think! Between Dublin Bus, the Luas (tram), Dublin Bikes (very popular public bicycle scheme), and the Dart/Commuter trains, it can be a bit of a head-wreck trying to figure out the quickest routes around the city. You'll get to know the idiosyncrasies of each mode of transport soon enough though I'm sure!

For nightlife, Camden Street is a good area with some interesting music bars. Whelans often showcases irish indie/rock talent and also some smaller international acts, The Village also puts on a good show. Last few times I've been in Anseo they had a DJ who played some great funk/soul motown sets, another good place to check out on the weekend. Templebar is mad, but will lose its novelty soon enough. Check out Dublin on spottedbylocals.com for tips - you'll get to know your own favourite places pretty quickly. :)

Don't rule out D8 (which you were talking about in your OP). By far my favourite place to live in Dublin. There are some lovely bars, nice places to eat, interesting shops and it's very central (ten minute walk to Temple Bar, and if you get bored of that, even shorter to George's Street/Camden Street, which has a nicer nightlife, imo). Look into areas around the Coombe and The Tenters as well as further east towards George's Street. You should be able to get a 2 bed house/apartment for 1000 euro or thereabouts.

It's also around a ten/fifteen minute walk to the bus you'd be getting out to Leixlip (although others might be able to comment about the frequency of the 66/a better than myself).

grand canal dock iiis veryyy tempting. believe me thats where i wanna live. but i looked at prices on daft and rents seem to g up to abou 1500pm for 2 bedrooms :/ ideal for us would be 1000 pm, though living like a baws on grand canal seems to be worth spending a little bit more^^

3.aahh thank yooou :D i love advice like that.

There's a thread about Dublin neighbourhoods, and someone mentioned something about D8 being dodgy depending on the street (as in one street is grand, while the next might be dodgy). Honestly, I never had a problem in the area with regards to it being dodgy or not, and the walk home to my place took in some fairly deserted streets. I know it might be different if you're a girl, but I wouldn't be the biggest or threatening looking of guys. The area around St Patrick's Cathedral (The Coombe, New Row) to the canal is fairly settled and has some lovely pubs/cafes for socialising, and Meath Street has a great market (and there's a Lidl on Thomas Street). A lovely park in front of the cathedral, and the canal at the back. It's not like Ranelagh or even Rathmines, but a far better place to live in terms of what's on your doorstep (imo). (Ranelagh's lovely too, though).

grand canal dock iiis veryyy tempting. believe me thats where i wanna live. but i looked at prices on daft and rents seem to g up to abou 1500pm for 2 bedrooms :/ ideal for us would be 1000 pm, though living like a baws on grand canal seems to be worth spending a little bit more^^

You should be able to get places cheaper than 1,500. Here are two2 bedroom places from 1,050 to 1,200 in Grand Canal Dock:

1.expensive :((((( arent there any places a bit further away from canal dock that is nice and has a bit lower rents?

Well maybe look at the streets just off Camden Street then - my girlfriend used to live on Grantham Street, there were lots of rental properties around there at the time too, you might be able to find a good deal. It was a very nice area to live with great places to eat and/or drink, 10 minutes walk to Stephen's Green, approx 20 minutes walk to get to Pearse Station or Grand Canal Dock. I think there is a Dublin Bikes station on Grantham street too which would get you to your train connection faster, although you'll need a thick skin and some courage when starting to cycle around Dublin :P

EDIT ^ Some good suggestions from Gae above ^

Ranelagh is a definitely a good spot for living, but as said already you'll perhaps find it a bit awkward for getting to/from work. Generally speaking though if you're on a frequent public transport route - major bus route, luas, etc then you should be covered even if it means getting an extra connection or two on your commute.

I work for HP in Leixlip, I rent a place in Foley Street, Dublin 1.

I live 5 minutes from O'Connolly station and 10 minutes from the busstop 66B (which comes from Merrion Square and goes along the Liffey River) although if you will not work for HP (but for Intel for example) I don't think that's of any relevance to you.

What some users said about junkies and Dublin 1 being rough, is true in a way, but don't let that scare you away. Dublin is still one of the safest cities in West Europe and I've walked home, drunkenly, more times than I can count and I've never ever had any problems.

In short, Dublin 1 is an amazing place to live with all amenities and interesting things in Dublin to see/do on walking distance. It's also really international with tons of Brazilians, Mexicans, French, Spanish, Koreans, etc. Makes for a very interesting experience!
The connections from Dublin to Leixlip, run through D1 so basically there's no negative thing about finding a place in D1.

Which company will you work for in Leixlip?

Yes, I think it's a bit evenly matched between Leixlip and Dublin. And there are a few odd ones living in Maynooth or Cellbridge.
