What would you rate the PS3 out of 10

I'd actually give it a 5, maybe even a 4. For me its really been an uninspiring console with not many very good games. When you contrast it to the PS2 which had so many defining games it just didn't come close.

I really hope the next one will be off the chain, and that with GTA V, at least the console will finish with a bang.

That's down to developers, not the console itself. Here's some great games the console has seen:

    Demon's Souls
    Dark Souls
    Dragon Age: Origins
    TES IV: Oblivion
    TES V: Skyrim
    Fallout 3
    Final Fantasy XIII
    GTA IV
    Red Dead Redemption
    Assassin's Creed series
    Battlefield 3
    Far Cry 2

...and there's many more. That list is just games in my collection.

I personally would give it 7, mostly deducting points because PlayStation Network leaves a lot to be desired, even if it is free.

I would rate it like this.. PS3 > 360.. Dont like xbox controller and the fact you need to pay for online.. Cross chat was put in Vita without a charge I find you shouldnt have to pay extra just for basically cross chat

The 360 Vs PS3 can of worms !! Thanks for opening that.

    I will say 8/10.

I dont agree with your opinion on lack of games.
Lots of lists can be made....

loads of brilliant games on the ps3. uncharted series is just the first bunch that jump out but have to say i've found it a great system. some issues on the tech side and the network but games wise no problems at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Brilliant games, brilliant piece of kit which even as a light gamer I probably have working on something for 40 or 50 hours a week. It's not the PS2, but that shouldn't be held against it.

I'm taking a mark off for the YLOD though. Give it an 8

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

    8, maybe a 9 but I'm really happy with my PS3.

Things I dont like, YLOD and the internet browser which I avoid at all cost if possible.

Yeah I'd give it an 8. 9 suggests an unbelievable piece of kit that's near flawless.

    Pro's
    • Great catalog of games
    • Free to play online (frustrating and all as it might be)
    • Integrated Blu-Ray player
    • Quiet enough for the most part

    Con's
    • YLOD
    • Chronic internet browser
    • Rear triggers on controller can be awkward

Weighing it all up, the PS3 would be (and is) my preferred choice of console this generation.

your bang on with them triggers they're a bitch especially when on you tube and they are way too sensitive id give it an 8 just the online browser is pretty bad

around 7. it could be way better IMHO but I guess they either cant understand gaming enough or it would just cost more money to make it a better games machine. Sometimes its almost like a toy for me. I take gaming serious but the controls and gameplay are child like at times.

Still in saying that I do use it each day and the games are addictive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

It's excellent IMO. I have both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and both have positives and negatives.

    PS3:

    Positives:

    Free online game play
    Excellent media (blu-ray etc)
Online browser (as bad as people say it is, at least it has one and it's handy for streaming etc as it has a flash player)

    Negatives:

Controller (not a fan of it)
    Security (the hacking)

    Xbox 360:

    Positives:

Better online experience (in my opinion)
    Better controller
    Seemingly better security

    Negatives:

    Expensive online game play
    No online browser
Can't be used for blu-ray etc

In short, both have positives and negatives, many of which come down to personal preference. If you want a slightly lesser gaming experience but better options such as blu-ray player and online browser then PS3 is your man. If you want a slightly better gaming experience but no blu-ray player or online browser then Xbox 360 is your man.

Personally I think the better one is the one most of your friends have, as you can play against them online a lot, swap games etc.

    I'd rate both consoles a 9/10.

The PS3 has been secure for well over a year, to my knowledge, there's no security issues that affect online useage...

Also, the 360 is a few clicks away from being an MCE extender...give me that over a cheap/flaky blu ray drive any day. My thoughts on it would be:

    PS3:

    Pros;

    Free online play.
    Built in upgradability (hdd)
    Online browser

    Cons;

Reliability (YLOD, Drive lasers are terrible too)
    Controller design is antiquated
Constant huge game updates with a slow SEN connection
Constant system updates which rarely make any difference to the user
Console features gradually removed through its life span

    XBOX360

    Pros;

Aside from the PS3 exclusives, the game library to me seems better.
    Better controller
    Media Center capabilities
    Quick/efficient system updates
System updates more often than not add to the experience
The online play despite being a paid model, is superior.

    Cons;

Reliability (RROD, drive lasers tend to burn out)
    Online model is subscription based
    No blu ray support

for me, the 360 wins out fairly easily.

Going to nip this in the bud now, this is NOT a PS3 vs 360 comparison thread - do that here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=2055671045

This is a rate the PS3 thread - keep it that way.
It will just descend into a fanboy slagfest - they always do, unfortunately.

Out of interest, how does the Xbox 360 handle updates? Presumably it doesn't do any due to the lack of hard drive space on some models?

Fortunately PS+ eliminates most of the update issues.

A few months ago I'd have classed PS+ as a major plus for the PS3. I'm unconvinced since the recent changes to that offering, though.

It does and handles them much better. Faster network & better compression.
Although looking at windows MS are used to delivering updates so its no surprise :pac:

But where does it save the patches? Don't most of the games run direct off of the disc?

Sorry, I'm completely ignorant of that system.

System updates are written directly to the nand flash chip, its got nothing to do with hdd space. The updates are delivered online or on game discs much the same as the PS3. They're written to flash in seconds.

What I was referring to were game updates, on the 360 they are delivered online like the PS3, but they are much, much smaller & install within seconds. The PS3's ones are huge by comparison, & the connection speed to SEN can be quite, quite slow at times meaning your kinda stuck.
Fortunately PS+ eliminates most of the update issues.

    The paid for model?

@Fingers - I hear what your saying, but if we're not rating the PS3 against its competitors...what are we to rate it against? I'm not trying to be funny/smart, but if your rating something, I think it's important to say what your rating it against & why. If I've misunderstood then my bad :)

The only version without internal memory was the old core version. Very few of them would still be around (without a HD added later anyway). The rest all contain some system memory for system updates & saves. Game patches require HDs

Even the first 360 had a 16MB nand for system updates, the system update is completely independent of hdd/internal storage space :)

Yeah the paid for model. My PS3 now turns itself on at 4am everyday, looks for any game updates for any game I've got game data for on my HDD, downloads & installs any patches and then turns itself off again.

Thats pretty cool actually, though I must say...the option to do that should be not limited to PS+ :)

For me sony are really ruining it for me, when the playstation first came out it was great, could hold all my media, run different OS's

Now they removed linux and forced installed Cinavia, it seems every update is to disable features not add them.

after 15 years playing playstation, i doubt i'll be getting another one :(

Cinavia is mandatory on all blu ray devices, you can't really hold that against Sony :o

Yes but there are plenty of blu ray players that don't have it because they were released before that became mandatory.

Losing Linux was much worse though :(

In those cases though, there's no option to upgrade them. In the case of the Ps3, it's simply a mandatory update thats required by trade law

I set mine for just after the store updates, which also happens to get everything done before i get home.

    8/10

Never had a reliably problem with my 60GB, my slim will freeze once in a blue moon but that's it.

-1 communication. Cross game chat and some sort of app/browsers based connectivity with the PS3.

PC to PS3, via program or site messaging.
Setting content to download, that will then be gotten when the PS3 starts up either on it's own or when use later. They're talking about "one Sony" or the like and i would be for this if it was not very restrictive to other brand devices which as they've not done much is hard to tell at this point.
we'll know soon when Japan get a proper trone nas launch.
-1 Community ( not the actual users), some games have what i would like built in but others that need it do not. Allowing for a core friends list and also a per game friends, clan list, or a simple LFG/LFM flag when you need it. With the ability to add tags to names. Generally a better system to bring the community together and to take some of the randomness out of online play.

I'd give it a 7 which would probably be a 9 if the ps3 still allowed you to play ps2 games.

That's not a bad idea. I think I only chose early morning to catch any weekend updates when my PS3 would otherwise be working but thinking about it I don't think they update at weekends anyway.

What time does the store update?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,656 ✭✭✭norrie rugger

    Cons:
No real native 1080p games, despite the promises and continuing marketing.
YLOD and Sony's refusal to acknowledge that they had an issue.
Sticking with the controller, against the wishes of customers.
Low level graphics card, choking the system.
Refusal of Sony to impliment any PSN changes requested by customers (not that I mind the lack of X-chat etc)
    Very limited RAM
Non exclusives primarily ported over from A.N.Other box
Terrible update times and massive downloads.

    Pros:
BluRay: Outstanding sound/video quality. People will say Streaming this and Downloading that but that really has only been an option for a few years now. PS3 was out before it was easily done, also high speed internet is still really only in the urban areas.
    Free wireless
    Upgradable HDD
    Free online
    Some great exclusives

Removing the build quality issue I would give it a 7-7.5
However, given that Sony has let down thousands of paying customers and refused to issue proper fixes, like their competitor, I would have to give it an overall

4.5, which is low enough for me to not automatically purchase the next generation console from the company

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭Cokeistan

I'll give my PS3 a 9 because it's a launch model that still has PS2 playback, and it's never got the YLOD, touch wood :D.

The fact that it has the best exclusives, free online play, and the excellent optional service that is Playstation Plus makes it the perfect console IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

The best console I've ever owned, with a lot of the exclusives being some of the best games I've ever played.

Some people are being overly harsh on some elements of the PS3.

Have a sneaky suspicion they have a certain console which would be considered a rival:)

Although I have to say the Browser is completely cat. In the 6 years of abuse it's got I thought Sony would have implemented a new one across the board.

    Fantastic Machine though.

I give mine a 9 out of 10 because i've had it since 2007 with no problems, unlike my xbox 360 which RROD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

    6.5/10

Mainly use it for playing movies these days, usually gives a nice picture. If I play a game or bluray it goes crazy loud. Wipeout was an animal game on it though!

Overall I expected it to be a bit better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 512 ✭✭✭GaryIrv93

I'd give it a solid 8. One problem that brought it down is I've noticed that when I go to check new messages, the controls often freeze at the Messages, Friends etc section even at full battery. The screen itself doesn't freeze, the backround still moves. It gets extremely annoying as the only way to fix it is to turn off or reset the system, especially during a game, which can leave current game progress unsaved. Turning off the controller doesn't work. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem?

Another problem I've had with it was the playing of games and DVD's. It'll sometimes freeze while the disc is loading, leaving a totally blank screen with no controls working such as trying to use the ''Quit Game'' or ''Quit'' features. No amount of waiting to sort itself out will work and the only way (again) is to turn off or reset the thing.

Overall though I love the PS3, always have had and always will. In the past 5 years I've had mine, it's given me countless hours of fun playing brilliant games like Call Of Duty, the Uncharted series and countless other games, is of excellent quality, very good for communicating with friends especially in the chat room, watching DVD's and everything else it has to give.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Mister Jingles

    As with most I'd give the PS3 a 7/10.
I've had mine since 2008 and I am starting to see it slowly fail on me.
I suppose though that I am doing well with the same one for nearly 4 years now. Only a few months ago the Blue-ray laser went on me which I got fixed but now I'm start to experience more software issues with freezing and the likes.

When it did come out there was some cracking games along with it, GTA IV to be specific followed down through the years with GT5, RDR and LA Noire and more. It is fair to say as well that Call of Duty could be considered one of the biggest franchises to be associated with the current generation console(s), some won't want to agree but it's the truth.

Other then that there isn't really much else for me to say other then roll on PS4 & Xbox 720. Will GTA V be release on the next generation console, nah doubt it.

8 out of 10 from me, its a great console.

More quality games than most of us could ever have time to play, region free, excellent blu ray player, Does streaming and plays all manner of video/music/photo files, is quiet and unobtrusive sitting under the TV.

It has flaws, the PSN is not great (the hacking was a major issue) although it is free and non exclusives are nearly always developed for the other console. I think perhaps some people may have had ratehr inflated expectations of what any console is likely to do or be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,024 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

If it weren't for the constant updates that take years !!!!! PS3 would easily get a ten but this drags it down to 5, and the fact thats it HDMI then it interferes with the digital signal coming in to the TV two major problems for me

I hsave both xbox and ps3 and without a doubt xbox is better

    Xbox 9/10
    Ps3 7/10

Xbox you pay for online yes, but you pay for a service. an excellent one at that!

Ps3 is free so they dont nearly put as much resources into it, hence its always crashing and isnt 1/4 as good as xbox live

The gameplay on xbox live is far better than ps3 and the standard of gaming is way higher

You can watch sky on xbox and play music while you game

The only thing ps3 as over xbox is the blue-ray

I had an XBOX but the big + for me was the Blu-ray....sure if you buy even the cheapest BR player it'll set you back 100 squid. So it made sense....games + Blu-ray = WINNING!
