I know theres regular gym price threads on here but rather than dig up an old one,
Is there any decently priced gyms in Galway?
Im on the westside of the city and have been a member with NRG on the off peak membership but due to funds im think €385 is a bit much for off peak, any other options? Anyone joined a gym recently?

Even a well priced month long membership would be ideal for the meantime.

    Anyone?

Define what a decent price is.

Did you read my post? Less than €385 fir off peak.

Yes I read your opening post. It states that you think €385 is a bit much for off-peak. It's not clear what you think is a decent price.

There's a deal for 10 passes for €29 at Leisureland on Smartsearch.

Thanks for that! Definetly a short term option for me.
In terms of a decent price I Dont think anywhere should be charging anymore than €385 for a full membership dont mind an off peak.

More like €300-€330 for off peak IMO.

    385, per year?

I paid 200 in Ardilaun for 3 months a while back.

Ardilaun & Ocean Fitness are way overpriced, Ardilaun always has been.

I think that's expensive.. Equivalent annual rate is €800!

The Galway Bay Hotel is really cheap and it's grand, only problem is no free weights, so if they are important it's not suitable.

Leisure Land is probably the next cheapest and they have pretty good equpitment, it's huge and never too crowded, probably the best in terms of value for money all round in fairness.

Avoid NRG, Ocean and The Ardiluan, they are insanely over priced, Galway must the most expensive place in Ireland for gym memberships.

Thanks for the info. Free weights are defo a must for anyplace i join.

Leisureland sounds promising, its a relatively new gym too.

I agree with you about Galway must being one of the dearest places in ireland for a gym. Why would they not be more competitive?
Isnt it a well known 'fact' that gym memberships and things like golf club memberships are the first expense people are dropping in a recession?

NRG for the size of it is not worth the money, access to their 2nd (smaller, even less equipped gym) in Bohermore as a bonus doesnt make it any better value for me.

    Hi

if you want a really cheap gym (this is a real mans gym and no pools either), go to Peak Physique in the Galway Shopping Centre.

I've had guest passes to many of the others and they are just all show.:D

Join one of the martial arts clubs in Galway. I don't know that they use equipment as such though, you'd be fit, you won't get big.

You're right there although they are cheaper since the recession. I remember moving in close to NRG years ago and couldn't believe their rates. Around that time I heard Ben Dunne opening a series of cheap gyms in Dublin which would have good rates (fact is, many people join and then stop going so tempt em in with a reasonable annual rate, then overbook the place in the knowledge they won't show).

Someone should use his model to undercut the competition in Galway.

If you are a student (or can find a student that looks like you and borrow their ID card) the Kingfisher is only €250/year

Thanks for the link to the Dunnes Gyms. They look fantastic and are priced really well. I guess they don't have a swimming pool though.

Some have pools, some don't. You can look through each location and see the facilities.

Kingfisher is a great gym (in NUIG), heard good things about the one beside GMIT.

If you're looking for the cheapest, the one I found was the Harbour Hotel with 3 months for €70, but from what I can tell its quite small.
    Treadmills x 2
    Exercise Bikes x 2
    Cross Trainer
    Resistance Weights
    Selection of free weights

If you want equipment from the 80s, used to go there and it sorely lacked in new equipment.

The equipment in Peak is very old but the membership is only €150 a year.
NUIG Kingfisher, on the other hand is the most modern and best equipped gym in Galway & memberships is only €300/ :D

Beware, it does get quite busy in peak times, especially when NUIG comes back. Apart from that, I haven't a bad word to say about it.

I heard there's like a six euro cost if you don't have a membership? I could be wrong?

If by "best equipped" you're referring to the quantity of treadmills then yes,Kingfisher NUIG is the best in Galway.Otherwise,to put it mildly,Kingfisher in NUIG sucks. For a "gym" it is anything but well equipped.Anyone who suggests otherwise evidently hasn't been to a gym before.

as someone else said earlier, try the deal on smartsearch. €29 for 10 sessions in leisureland, gym and pool with some advice given from one of their staff. if swimming is your thing then dont bother with nrg in knockncarra - pool is crap!! altho saying that i do like their outdoor tub!

Any gyms or that near Ballybrit where I could go for a swim at lunchtimes? Taking a job in Galway and would love to get out to improve my swimming at lunchtime.
If its part of a gym thats ok, but i wouldn't really be using the gym besides as I dont live in Galway.

    Thanks v much.

is there a weightlifting club in NUIG?

I know the rowing club there have a gym somewhere. as do the other rowing clubs in the city.
it might be cheaper to join a rowing club, GAA or rugby club and avail of their facilities!
