Legends mod

So basically I'm going to have a lot of free time on my hands over the next couple of months and I've decided to do a legends mod on the Editor. As a Manchester United fan, I've got a fair idea for their squad. Obviously I would know legends from other clubs too but I'd prefer to hear fans of those clubs tell me who they'd like to see. I'll be doing 23 man squads with 2 players in every outfield position and three keepers. For the record, my Manchester United team is as follows:
    GK: Schmeichel, Stepney, VDS
    RB: Gary Neville, Carey
    CB: Bruce, Pallister, Buchan, Foulkes
    LB: Irwin, Albiston
    CM: Keane, Edwards, Robson, Scholes
    RM: Coppell, Best
    LM: Giggs, Meredith
    ST: Charlton, Law, Cantona, Taylor/Rooney.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

brilliant idea, are you looking for ideas on teams for other clubs?

    Ronaldo for United for start!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭EveAlex

    Liverpool FC

    Retired players only?

GK: Bruce Grobbelaar, Ray Clemence, Jerzy Dudek (for his champions league exploits)
    LB: Alan Kennedy, Steve Nicol
    RB: Phil Neal, Tommy Smith
CB: Ron Yeates, Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Emlyn Hughes
    LW: Billy Liddel, Steve Highway
CM: Graeme Souness, John Barnes, Jan Molby, Didi Hamann
    RW: Ray Kennedy, Ian Callaghan
ST: Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Kevin Keegan, Robbie Fowler (maybe ian st john, roger hunt instead of fowler)

*Gerrard and Reina would make the list only they are currently playing*

    Eh, George Best?

    Eh, George Best?
    Jaysus I knew I forgot someone :D

    @ WilcoOut Yes please

@ Paul Tergat I think I'll put Ronaldo on the Madrid team as he has a better record there

@ EveAlex No not only retired players, thanks for the feedback. Who would you exclude for Gerrard and Reina? Would Ronnie Whelan not make the team?

    reina instead of dudek

    gerrard instead of hamann

if you were to elect whelan, he would replace either molby or kennedy

I'm out of the country until Monday, so I probably won't be starting until Tuesday. However, I have been researching some teams and I think I have both Leeds and Arsenal squads prepared.

For Arsenal you really just need to take the Invincible first 11 and add the likes of Wright, Adams etc to it. I'd imagine Arsenal would be one of the easiest to do. If you wanted I could put up a team sheet of what I'd have done if you want to compare it to yours?

To be honest, I'm not sure yet whether to make their stats respective of their own abilities, or relative to other legends

@gnfnrhead Your take would be much appreciated. Below is my take, but I'm no expert.

    Arsenal

GK: David Seaman, Pat Jennings, Jens Lehmann
    RB: Lee Dixon, Pat Rice
CB: Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Dave O'Leary, Sol Campbell
    LB: Nigel Winterburn, Bob McNab
    RM: Freddie Ljunberg, Paul Merson
CM: Patrick Viera, Ray Parlour, Liam Brady, Cesc Fabregas
    LM: Graham Rix, Marc Overmars
ST: Theirry Henry, Ian Wright, Denis Bergkamp, RVP

    Leeds

GK: Nigel Martyn, David Sprake , David Harvey
    RB: Paul Reaney, Neil Aspin
CB: John Charles, Norman Hunter, Jack Charlton, Lucas Radebe
    LB: Paul Madeley, Terry Cooper
    RM: Gordon Strachan, Gary Speed
CM: Billy Bremner, John Giles, Bobby Collins, David Batty
    LM: Eddie Gray, Gary McAllister
ST: Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke, Mick Jones, Joe Jordan

I'd definitely have Pires in there, Gilberto too, at the expense of Fabregas or Parlour. Petit and Cole would be in with a shout too.

Pires is the big omission for me. Everyone else you can make an argument either way for.

Thanks for the feedback. Completely forgot about Pires, who should I take out, Rix or Overmars? I considered the other 3. Petit and Gilberto were a coin toss for inclusion but Fabregas had stayed at the club for longer than both, thus his inclusion. Cole is my least favourite player of all time, and I couldn't bring myself to include him, especially as he wasn't a definite.

Good Idea OP, but I would recommend narrowing it down to Legends of the Premier League era. It would be very straight forward picking squads from the past 20 years and for most of us we could give more input. Most of the big premier league clubs would only have had 2 top players for each position in the past 20 years.

While I agree it would be more straightforward, I think if I'm going to do this, I want to do it properly. I want to see Best, Moore, Pele, Maradona et al in action. It's not a bad idea though. If anyone can even give me squads based on the Premier League it would be much aprecciated. I can then add older players if needs be.

Also, and this is to everyone, what should the make-up of the Premier League look like? I'm thinking along the lines of:

    Manchester United
    Liverpool
    Arsenal
    Leeds United
    Chelsea
    Nottingham Forest
    Wolves
    Aston Villa
    Manchester City
    Everton
    Tottenham Hotspur
    Newcastle United
    Blackburn Rovers
    Sunderland
    West Ham United

After that, I'm not sure. Bolton? Wimbledon? Preston?

    Thanks again for any feedback.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Overmars was great for us and would be better known but Rix was captain for a while and had a great partnership with Brady from what I've seen. Overmars might be easier to put in since he player much more recently, it would be easier to judge his stats. Think it's another coin toss!

I think I'll plump for Rix based on the fact that he played more games, was captain etc.
Also, I've put together squads for Juve and Real, as follows:

    Juventus

GK: Gianluigi Buffon, Gianpiero Combi, Dino Zoff
    RB: Ciro Ferrara, Claudio Gentile
CB: Sergio Brio, Antonio Cabrini, Sandro Salvadore, Gaetano Scirea
    LB: Pietro Rava, Marco Tardelli
RM: Alessandro del Piero, Michel Platini
CM: Giuseppe Furino, Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps, Edgar Davids
    LM: Pavel Nedved, Paolo Rossi
ST: Roberto Baggio, Giampiero Boniperti, David Trezuget, John Hansen

    Real Madrid

GK: Iker Casillas, Ricardo Zamora, Santiago Canizares
    RB: Miguel Noguera, Chendo
CB: Fernando Hierro, Jose Santamaria, Manolo Sanchís, Gregorio Benito
LB: Jose Antonio Camacho, Roberto Carlos
    RM: Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo
CM: Alfredo di Stefano, Pirri, Guti, Fernando Rendondo/Bernd Schuster
    LM: Fransisco Gento, Ferenc Puskas
ST: Santillano, Ronaldo, Raul, Hugo Sanchez

well if we did that it would justify having chelsea (dont know any chelsea legends pre premier league) and i suppose it would also give arsenal a fighting chance too

but if its gonna be a legends mod, it should be done with all the greats

    just my opinion

Well, Real and Barca from Spain, Juventus and maybe the Milan teams from Italy, Celtic and probably Rangers from Scotland, Ajax from Holland, Bayern Munich from Germany. Along with this I'll also be putting in one or two legends at other clubs i.e Pele at Santos, Garrincha at Botafago, Boniek at Widzew Lodz etc.

Id definitely have Bolton in there. Maybe ahead of sunderland/wolves.

THe main reason being that the quality of players they had for 2/3 seasons under big sam. Might just add more to the game if jayjay, djorkaeff, campo etc were involved instead of kevin doyle and big nialler

Alright, cheers, Bolton are in, although I doubt Kev will make the Wolves team anyway.

@PerrinV2 Some of those guys will be at other clubs but if they're not I'll stick them in at Parma.

Another general question now: How do I put player's faces on their profile using the editor? I've never been able before.

Finally, I've completed Forest and Everton's squads.

    Nottingham Forest

GK: Peter Shilton, Steve Sutton, Peter Grummitt
    RB: Bill Whare, Viv Anderson
CB: Bob Chapman, Bob McKinlay, Des Walker, Kenny Burns
    LB: Stuart Pearce, Larry Lloyd
    RM: Ian Storey-Moore, Nigel Clough
CM: Martin O'Neill, Ian Bowyer, John McGovern, Jack Burkitt
    LM: John Robertson, Archie Gemmill
ST: Grenville Morris, Garry Birtles, Trevor Francis, Stan Collymore

    Everton

GK: Neville Southall, Ted Sagar, Gordon West
    RB: Gary Stevens, Tommy Jones
CB: Brian Labone, Kevin Ratcliffe, Mick Lyons, Dave Watson
    LB: Ray Wilson, Jack Taylor
    RM: Duncan McKenzie, Roy Vernon
CM: Colin Harvey, Alan Ball, Howard Kendall, Barry Horne
    LM: Kevin Sheedy, Derek Temple
ST: Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton, Bob Latchford, Andy Gray

Real are above somewhere, and Barca will be in my next update.

Figo will play for Madrid, as I don't think Barca fans consider him a legend!

Juve get Zidane because I have a feeling Real will be too good.

Three more teams done now: Celtic, Ajax and Spurs

    Tottenham Hotspur

GK: Pat Jennings*, Bill Brown, Ted Ditchburn
    RB: Peter Baker, Stephen Carr
CB: Mike England, Gary Mabbutt, Phil Beal, Ledley King
    LB: Ron Henry, Chris Hughton
    RM: Darren Anderton, Bill Nicholson
CM: Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle, Danny Blanchflower, Steffen Freund
    LM: Chris Waddle, Dave Mackay
ST: Jurgen Klinsmann, Jimmy Greaves, Robbie Keane, Teddy Sheringham

*Jack Kelsey will replace Jennings at Arsenal

    Celtic

GK: Ronnie Simpson, Packie Bonner, John Thomson
    RB: Danny McGrain, Jimmy Craig
CB: Billy McNeill, Bobby Murdoch, Bobby Evans, Johannes Eōvaldsson
    LB: Tommy Gemmell, Jimmy McStay
    RM: Jimmy Johnstone, Paddy Crerand
CM: Tommy Burns, Bobby Murdoch, Bertie Auld, Paul McStay, Peter Grant
    LM: George Connelly, Bertie Auld
ST: Henrik Larsson, Jimmy McGrory, Bobby Lennox, Stevie Chalmers

    Ajax

    @inforfun

2 players in every outfield position and three keepers. Positions are just normal: GK, RB, LB, CB, RM, LM, CM, ST. If a player was a half-back I generally just slot him in in centre mid or fullback.

    Manchester City

GK: Bert Trautmann, Frank Swift, Joe Corrigan
    RB: Tony Book, Tommy Booth
CB: Mike Doyle, Malcom Allison, Sam Cowan, Richard Dunne
    LB: Glyn Pardoe, Willie Donachie
    RM: Mike Summerbee, Ernie Toseland
CM: Alan Oakes, Colin Bell, David Silva, Roy Paul
    LM: Eric Brook, Roy Clarke
ST: Tommy Johnson, Francis Lee, Shaun Goater, Joe Hayes

    Bayern Munich

GK: Oliver Kahn, Sepp Maier, Raimond Aumann
    RB: Philip Lahm, Udo Horsmann
CB: Franz Beckenbauer, Klaus Augenthaler, Georg Schwarzenbeck, Thomas Helmer
    LB: Bixente Lizarazu, Hans Pflüger
    RM: Franz Roth, Hasan Salihamidzic
CM: Mehmet Scholl, Bastien Schweinsteiger, Lothar Matthäus, Paul Breitner
    LM: Uli Hoeness, Steffan Effenberg
ST: Gerd Muller, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Roland Wohlfarth, Giovane Elber

    Feyenoord

    GK
Eddy Pieters Graafland/Eddy Treijtel/Ed de Goey

    RB
    Bennie Wijnstekers/Piet Romeijn

    CB
    Rinus Israel/Theo Laseroms/John de Wolf/Wim Rijsbergen

    LB
    Cor Veldhoen/Ruud Heus

    RM
    Wim Jansen/Dirk Kuyt

    CM
    Paul Bosvelt/Franz Hasil/Henk Wery/John Dahl Tomasson

    LM
    Wim van Hanegem/Coen Moulijn

    ST
    Ove Kindvall/Pierre van Hooijdonk/Joszef Kiprich/Julio Ricardo Cruz

Kind of tough to put this together as throughout their history a 4-3-3 system was played.

So at least 3 of them are a bit out of position. Kuyt, Tomasson, Moulijn who were more attackers than midfielders

    Bolton

Obviously I'm still young, so I can't give a definite team, but I'd say, in no particular order:

GK: Jussi Jaaskelainen, Keith Brannigan, Eddie Hopkinson

    LB: Ricardo Gardner, Simon Charlton

CB: Sam Allardyce, Paul Jones, Bruno N'Gotty, Tommy Banks

    RB: Gundi Bergsson, Jason McAteer

    RM: Per Frandsen, Youri Djokaeff

CM: Jay-Jay Okocha (<3), Peter Reid, Ivan Campo, Eidur Gudjohnsen

    LM: Peter Thompson, Alan Thompson

ST: Nat Lofthouse, John McGinlay, Frank Worthington, Andy Walker

Big shout out to those who couldn't make it:
Fernando Hierro, Fred Hill, Alan Stubbs, John Byrom, Kevin Davies and a few others.

Some of these I honestly haven't really seen like Eddie Hopkinson or Tommy Banks.
But from what I've heard and read they deserve their place.

I'm sure many of you have seen this, but might not have known who it was.

I think Derby deserve a spot in the Premier League. Won 2 titles under Brian Clough and made a European Cup semi. Also part of the Premier League for 6 or 7 years.

Southampton too were in the top division for donkeys years.
