I currently work in an area of IT that due to various reasons has very few qualified people, and there is a lot of work, both in Ireland and worldwide, and there are no restrictions on the work on a global basis.

I'm thinking of leaving my permanent role and striking out on my own contracting for six to twelve months and using that time to build my own small but sustainable business.

There would be three strands to it:

    1. Contracting on a short term (3,6,9,12) month basis.
    2. Developing intellectual property for licencing worldwide
    3. Maintaining qualifications to allow me to fill gaps between contracts.

My thinking is that 1. will allow me to develop and build on 2. and 3.
    2. is neither office based nor time/place dependant and could be a long term and lucrative prospect.
    3. involves an accreditation that lasts three years, and I can use that to pad contracts.

Income wise I should be as well off as now if not better initially, and if 2. works, in the long term, much better off.

I've looked into licencing issues, startup costs, ongoing costs, admin costs, etc and am happy with them all.

Is there anything I am missing? What do others of you think?

It's a very very specialised field hence the opportunity.
