Phase 3 Hurling Qualifers

Matches are supposed to be played as a double header in Thurlas next Sunday (15th of July), Clare and Cork to be drawn against Limerick and Wexford. I would imagine that which ever game Limerick are in will be the main event.

Clare v. Limerick I guess would be the pick of the draws, some rivalry going down the years (who dares speak of 96?), be touch and go as to who would be favourites, I guess Clare would be on the back of their 2 league wins.

Clare v. Wexford would be the draw Wexford would be hoping for, the yellow bellies have been quiet this year and wouldn't be any push over for Clare.

Cork v. Limerick would be a tester for Limerick and would pit the 2 teams beaten by Tipperary against each other, Cork would fancy their chances here I'd say.

Cork v. Wexford, Cork would again fancy their chances in this 1.

I would prefer for Wexford to get Clare rather than Cork, and I imagine both teams would want to draw Wexford

Games are to be played at a neutral venue, I imagine a double header in Thurles would make sense

As a Limerick fan, I'd prefer Clare over Cork. After all, we've played them twice this season and we know we can beat them if we play to the top of our game.

Cork look very good but I'd still think we could beat them. They'd definitely be favourites though. After all some people thought they were dark horses for the All-Ireland and they were unlucky against Tipp.

The problem with the current championship structure is that the phase two winners play on successive weekends while the phase one winners get a an extra week to prepare and recover. Phase I and II need to take place over the same weekend in my opinion.

Wexford are the underdogs, we know how teams love to take motivation from being "written off" so maybe they'll react to the talk of them being the easier draw and so on. I expect them to be competetive but I don't expect them to win.

Clare, Limerick and Cork are all in the same boat really, all 3 will expect to win their games regardless of the draw. All 3 teams are at similar stages of their development. I'm hoping Limerick get Cork because I believe that would provide an excellent game of hurling.

A daunting prospect awaiting one of the winners; an angry Kilkenny!!

Wexford footballers playing Tipp in a qualifier in thurles on saturday at 5. Surely the sensible thing is to have their hurlers play before or after this rather than having them travel to thurles twice in under 24 hours

The matches are down to be played next Sunday http://www.gaa.ie/fixtures-and-results/date/2012_07_15/ and I heard that Wexford have agreed to play in Thurlas.

Is the draw tomorrow morning at 8.30 as has been the case for the last few weeks for both hurling and football qualifiers. since there's just a one week turnaround now i think it should have been made tonight.
would like to see a Limerick/Cork game. we've already played Clare twice this year and the banner are on some high after last night.
Davy's new pub must've been jointed.!!!

Ya, the draw is on the morning. I think apart from WX, any of the other 3 teams can beat each other.

Shock horror, Clare v. Limerick and Wexford v. Cork. Should be 2 good games.

Surley a triple header on Saturday in Thurles is most logical setup

Both Clare and limerick would have been better off drawing cork, think the win over dub makes clare favourites.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,299 ✭✭✭BERBA

Just assume for a minute that cork and clare win those games and tipp beat waterford leaving cats and waterford in phase 4 draw......is that then an open draw? ...avoid the cats bigtime in that one !!!

If cork and Clare win and Tipp win then it Will be

    Clare v kk
    cork v Waterford

as Clare and Waterford have already played

Double header Saturday evening in Thurlas is the plan I believe, I've just realised that I promised Mrs. Clareman I'd bring her out for dinner next Saturday night, oops.

I think they have gotten rid of the "teams can't play twice" thing now once it gets to the quarter finals. I would have Limerick slight favourites over Clare by the way, the couple of games and the extra week's break will really stand to them, also, in the league game the only difference between the teams was fitness levels, that should have evened out now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,553 ✭✭✭soccymonster

According to twitter, they were trying to fix the limerick v clare match for Killarney but Clare weren't warming to that, at all.
Also I'm shamelessly stealing this from a waterford lad's gaa blog but basically there's a few pan-out scenarios for the championship (if you havent guessed that yet!).. So if Clare beat Limerick basically, no open draw. If Limerick beat Clare, open draw. But it's kinda different if WX pull off abit of a shocker against Cork then. Click the link if ya want to see those situations..

Would portlaoise be more accessible for the limerick and clare game because of the motorway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Tipp play Wexford in a football qualifier in Thurles at 5pm Saturday so that has to be factored in as well.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,036 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Croke Park would be more accessible than Killarney, especially as everyone will be on the same road.

That's too far away in fairness. You'd get a tiny crowd.

Pearse Stadium is free on Saturday. ;)

That would suit me too :D

Seriously though, could Pearse Stadium be a runner?
It's the closest neutral, decent stadium for Clare and Limerick. And a good section of the road to Limerick city is motorway.

the thought of galway city traffic on a saturday evening especially when both sets of supporters are heading the same way makes me die abit inside tbh :P

LK and Cork will be the likely winners imo.

That would be the big stumbling block. Galway City and Salhill cannot handle the traffic even for smaller matches. Its a pity because its a top class ground and tends to be underused. If the Motorway and outer by pass were finished it would be a no brainer. Until then its a bad idea.

Doesn't have to be but the teams will have to agree to it being played in the home of the other team (i.e. Clare would have to agree to it being played in Limerick).

Just off the phone (again!!!!) looks like the Clare County Board will agree to play it in Limerick rather than going down to Killarney

    Thanks!

Yeah I think Clare should play in Limerick. Nice pitch and I don't fancy a drive to Kerry!

Any idea as to when it the fixture and time will be confirmed. I presume it will be a 7pm throw in also. Plan on going to this from Dublin to support my second favourite team Limerick

    Common sense prevails.

How definite is that? Personally I'd love a triple header and get the value out of the ticket! Killarney would be a disaster dragging both sets of fans down.

A double header in Limerick would surely be the most sensible option?

Wexford are playing a football qualifier in Thurles the same day, so a double header there probably makes the most sense

Do they still exist? Only joking.
If you want the 2 hurling matches on the same bill then I think it's the best option. Otherwise, you have a double bill with Tipp v Wexford in the football and Cork v Wexford in the hurling and play Limerick v Clare somewhere else.
Might coax a few fans out of the sunny south east I suppose...

haha...i think like i said earlier that a triple header in thurles would be the best for everyone...would be a feast of GAA, value for money and would bring out Tipp neutrals for the hurling games too ( like me :p ) to wet the appetite for Sunday

That could work. However (and I'm not for one moment suggesting that the GAA are greedy ;)), I'd imagine that Clare v Limerick in the championship could easily draw 20,000+ if it were played in Limerick. Would you get the same crowd for what would more than likely be a late throw in if the game were to be played in Thurles?

While I'd certainly prefer the Limerick match in the Gaelic Grounds, a triple header in Thurles would be class, love to go see that.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,036 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

The latest is that plan a is to have a triple header in Thurlas and if that doesn't go ahead the 2 Wexford games are played there and Clare Limerick is on in either Killarney or Limerick (Clare have to agree to that)

Let's be honest though, if the 2 hurling matches are on after the football, will any of the hurling crowd (with the exception of a few Wexford fans) turn up to watch Tipp v Wexford in football? If that match was in my back garden I'd close the curtains!

I can see it going that way. Tipp v Wexford at 5, Cork v Wexford at 7. Clare v Limerick elsewhere.

If Clare make us all go down to fcuking Killarney, I'll be extremely pissed off. I hate going down there, Portlaoise or Galway would even be better.

Galway isn't a whole lot better imho. Traffic is a bloomin' nightmare there! There's always the train I suppose. I'm sure IE are waiting for confirmation as to whether they need to jack up the prices or not!

The pitch will be in some state by the end of the third game if they go for a triple header.

Good point. Will probably be in a state by half time in the first match given the amount of rain we've had!

I personally wouldn't be in favour of the idea of a triple header as they would then hike up the prices.

I'd have no interest in the football and its reasonable to expect that Cork will have a straight forward win in the hurling as well. Play it in Limerick/Ennis (def not Killarney or Portlaoise) and charge a reasonable rate to draw in the crowd.

If its triple header and they are charging 35e/40e for a ticket I for one will consider watching it at home in HD.

I think that would be most people's thinking. A football match between 2 fairly weak counties and what should be a facile win for Cork in the hurling won't interest the majority of Limerick & Clare fans. That's my opinion anyway. If they split it in to a Wexford double bill and a Limerick v Clare clash in Limerick (surely can't be Ennis as it only holds 12,000) then the GAA will be maximising profits. Can't see them missing an opportunity to do that!

I don't really like the idea of a triple header. In theory it sounds good. But you'll get people milling around during a game that they might not really care about, which will surely interfere with the atmosphere.
As has been mentioned, could you imagine the state of the pitch for the 3rd game if it was a wet day - a very strong possibility.
Both Wexford games as a double header and the Lim/clare game in Limerick - happy days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,553 ✭✭✭✭Copper_pipe

Its a triple header lads ,Limerick game at 7 , Cork vs Wexford on at 5

    @laherne95 is source

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,036 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Playing the football last would probably be the only way to save the pitch for the hurling, but I guess they expect to have the biggest crowd from Limerick and Clare so that'll be on last.

Now, better go buy something for the missus to break the good news to her that I'm going to a hurling match Saturday evening and not for dinner :)
