When Kripke left, and they were coming up with their own stuff which I think was season 5, I was hoping they wouldn't let it turn to crap. I'm still enjoying it a lot. Think next season is set to be quite promising. I don't need to read spoilers though.

It was a strange one. There were some good episodes but a weak season arc.

Some people here hated it but I enjoyed it for the most. It was probably though the weakest since the first season, mainly due to a story arc just not being strong enough. Season 8's arc already looks stronger though so I'm hopeful.

I think last season was the first time where I was not actively looking forward to an episode of Supernatural. It wasn't horrible, it was just very weak compared to the previous 6 seasons, each of which I thought were brilliant and it was one of my can't miss shows. Of all the shows downloaded on the day it was my first to watch. Last year I watched Fringe first, sometimes even Nikita.

Let's hope next season is a return to form.

One episode I did love was the episode where the thing you most feared killed you.
    Unicorn Death!!

Ty Olsson is to join the show’s eighth season in a pivotal recurring role.
He will play Benny, a dark and dangerous vampire who helps Dean escape from purgatory.
“He’s not a good guy,” Dean’s portrayer, Jensen Ackles, tells TVLine. “[He] stands to pose a bit of an issue for Dean because maybe there are things that Dean has hidden that he doesn’t want to tell Sam that happened in purgatory.”
The character is set to debut in the show’s Oct. 3 season premiere.

DJ Qualls has confirmed that he will appear in Supernatural season eight.
The actor has appeared as bumbling hunter Garth in two episodes of the CW drama, 2011's 'Season Seven, Time for a Wedding and 2012's 'Party On, Garth'.
"I'll go back to Supernatural in a couple of weeks," Qualls confirmed at the TCA press tour. "It's one of my favourite shows to moonlight on. Jared Padalecki (Sam) is a really good buddy of mine and also they wrote the part for me."
Qualls added that he had a "great time" on Supernatural, according to Pop Culture Zoo, calling the show's devoted fans "insane".
"I did [a convention] in Birmingham, England," he revealed. "And literally people would just line up and hug you and cry - they love it."
Ricky Worthy (the Alpha Vampire) has also hinted that he will return to Supernatural next season.
    Liane Balaban (Alphas) and
Ty Olsson (Twilight) have also signed up for recurring roles

I just started watching online a couple of months ago. I'm starting season 7 now and so far I love the show. Cas is my favourite :3

Could anyone tell me what channel season 8 will be showing on? I watch the repeats on Sky Living whenever they're on, but I'm not sure if that's where the new episodes are going to be. Thanks!

Living is showing season 7 now so it'll be some time in 2013 before season 8 is televised this side of the Atlantic.Looks like you'll be watching season 8 online also.

I had given up after a couple of episodes of Season 7 because I didn't like the story arc, but decided to give it another go and there was some great episodes in there... Caught up in time for Season 8, which I'm looking forward to...

    No Leviathans. Good thing.
Tongue in cheek nod to the amount of times Sam & Dean have died/gone to hell/somewhere. Good thing.

Dean having a secret that he doesn't tell Sam about? Bit repetitive. Meg/Demon blood/Lucifer visions/No soul Sam. The other reluctant to go back to hunting, leaving a loved one behind. A bit season 6ey.

    Impala. :D

Crowley. I prefer him as comic relief, but if a proper big bad, then maybe.

Kevin the prophet? Can't really see him lasting too long, but I'm guessing a bit of racial diversity(?) First asian main character I can think of.

Overall, not a really strong Season Premiere, BUT I like it a bit better than season 7.

Not a bad episode, its just not grabbing me as much as it used to. 2 seasons ago this used to be the first thing I'd watch and would be looking forward to it.

Firstly, the Sam and Dean bickering is done every single bleedin season, get over it, its old, its done.

I don't care if the show was originally about the brothers and that's the "heart" of the show, Castiel is a major loss and was so last season as well. He needs to be brought back and be a major character, end of.

The thing with this vampire that Dean was in Purgatory with could be interesting,Sam's last year doesn't seem interesting!

Lets see where it goes from here I suppose!

Decent start to the new season. Strange thing with the acting though. Jensen Ackles seems as animated and into it as ever; Jared Padalecki seems to be dialling in his performance. The continuing snap and freshness was part of what kept Supernatural so watchable. If Padalecki starts to show boredom, it's going to tank quickly. Hopefully he'll wake up.

Two things, while they occur to me. The first thing is that I'm generally not a big fan of season-long story arcs dominating. You need one simmering along in the background so as to give a rollicking season finale, but generally I see them as a lazy way of propelling a series that's built its viewership on tightly-plotted one-off dramas. The same thing happened most notably to the X Files.

Also, I'd want to see the usual strong back-up cast get right back in there. Crowley's a great character, but if they have to disinter Bobby and Cas one more time, then do it, as the series gains a lot by having them there.

I took this as deliberate though. Dean has had a year of.. well not hell but damn close enough. Sam meanwhile has been living a domestic life and he let go of his worries - he's therefore much more relaxed and toned down. I expect to see that dissolve over the coming episodes.
The first thing is that I'm generally not a big fan of season-long story arcs dominating.
What would be your take on Season 5 which had the strongest arc? One of the issues sometimes with the show is that the arc is something immense (including the Apocalypse) yet it feels a bit disruptive when they drop it for weeks to meander around on story-of-the-weeks. I like big arcs, just once they're interwoven correctly.
Crowley's a great character, but if they have to disinter Bobby and Cas one more time, then do it, as the series gains a lot by having them there.
As much as I love Bobby, we've got closure on his arc. He should not be back except in a flashback format. Cas on the other hand - there's obviously something up there, which we've yet to see.
I do think there's potential for new characters. Kevin's interesting but not quite strong enough yet.

So far I'm also liking the look of it more than season 7, which was the only season I didn't really enjoy that much. Though I wasn't crazy about Sam in season 1 either, but other than his bitchin' it was a good season! : )

Waiting for some updates on what the hell is going on with Cas, though O.o

Supernatural has a terrible track-record of jarring skips from season finales to season openers. I can't count the amount of times a season has ended with one of them dead/in hell and the next starts with them instantly out. I really wish they play those angles concurrently for once and have Dean finding a way out of Purgatory (and perhaps meetings some old friends along the way) and figuring out something for Sam to be doing separately.

I like Sam's arc this year, and hopefully his other-half doesn't descend into simply being the paper-thin damsel-in-distress Dean's 'family' was in season 6. Dean and his Purgatory friend should go somewhere interesting and the main arc of closing hell completely is a good way of freshening up a story where the brothers are mostly reacting to events rather than deciding their course.

Anyways, still an incredibly enjoyable 40 minutes, and I'm actually happy I'm finally up to-date on after years of watching DVDs - at this point I think it benefits me more to watch the episodes over a longer period of time than close together because eight seasons does lead to fatigue, be it the characters or the viewers.

Ep 2 was pretty good. Lots of Crowley which is always good, although he doesn't seem to be as threatening/menacing as he should really be, hopefully they'll build that up as the season goes on.

Dean's purgatory story is very good too, and there's obviously a lot more to come out there. I wonder will it turn out that Cas is gone for good.

Sam seems to be barely present again. But I wonder is that deliberate and there'll be a story behind it that will come out in later episodes.

Sorry now just watching season 7 episode 6 but the scene in the car with Dean lip-syncing Air supply is comedy gold. The pair of them are classic with the faces but i reckon after watching all the series Ackles has fantastic comedic timing.

Just watched it again and ackles heead bob is clasic comedy. Brilliant.

Liked this one enough (directed by Ackles) mainly due to the interaction between Sam and Dean, but the story wasn't much of a stretch for the writers. What's up with Sam?

Just watched it. Interesting take on a "found footage" format. Not sure if I really liked it. Some good effects work, and the credits gave me a chuckle (you'll know why when you see them).

Now. Back to the Word of God stuff next week, PLEASE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

Yeah I didn't really enjoy that very much relative to a normal episode. Shame because I was kind of looking forward to a good episode of Supernatural. I'm not sure what you mean by the credits?

Btw, if anyone is looking for that song at the end (Soundhound didn't recognise it for me)

I didn't think it was great at all, tbh. I'm not overly familiar 'food footage' stuff, but I would have preferred it if they had subverted the genre a bit more. The three kids were a bit annoying, but then being filmed constantly is annoying. The girl seemed the most grounded, though, (the odd scream and romance zzz aside) so I liked that aspect. That and them following Dean and Sam in FBI mode.

It was quirky and different, and it had the leads in a supporting role - I like those types of episodes every now and again, so I actually enjoyed it. Got a great laugh out of the credits...

The post title credits didn't start until after the found footage (about 3 minutes from the end of the episode).

well that experimental ep. hit the ratibgs hard last night...negatively.

Yeah I believe that. I nearly switched off after 15 minutes, but stuck it out...

I thought it was good, but I've always enjoyed the experimental throwaway episodes that they do every now and then.

And tbh I was doing some work on the laptop at the time, I might have felt differently if I was giving it my full attention.

You realise that the ratings don't reflect the episode itself, right?
There was a drop from last week, but that says more about last week's episode than this one.

well what did you think of the experimental episode Richard? Why do you think it hit the ratings hard? Was it the way the episode was done...oh wait, do you even watch the show...?

I'd say solid, generally well done and enjoyable, but not all that remarkable. Got some more insight into the flashbacks, which was good.

If sam looks at one more random object and has another awkward flashback to this new women he is obsessing over then I will quit this show. It got bloody ridiculous in the last episode.

Shame cause the Dean plotline was actually interesting...

    FYP. :o

I think Sam's arc will end badly. I expect something horrible will happen (or has happened) to Amelia.

Seemed like a short cut episode to reach the inevitable Sam and Dean flare up. Stronger in the second half. Some fun nods, in jokes and quips in there.

Finally back to the main storyline today! Nice to see Castiel again and also nice to see Amanda Tapping! I'm guessing maybe she is secretary to God!? Or maybe Chuck (who may be God), that'd be awesome.

Yeah excellent episode this week. The purgatory flashbacks should be over now too.
