In the winter before it gets dark in the evenings they will flock in to roost so you get a lot of shots at the edge of the wood or if you are allowed be in the wood 30 minutes before till dark. During summer you can only shoot them for crop protection so I dont know the best way about doing that. Ive only ever shot them during the summer around silage with a rifle.

Using decoys and an electric caller are apparently illegal too so you can only use a mouth caller.

the woods im in is more of a plantation trees are 10 to 15 foot tall i can see the roost but its at a few houses no permission there ill pick an electric caller up soon and a few decoys..

you could try a large owl decoy, they'll either ignore it or go absolutely mad at it, if you can put a dead crow at its feet that should work.

I thought it was just illegal to use recordings or crows not electric callers that's just what I heard but I'm probably wrong[/QUOTE]

Its in an amendment of the wildlife act apparently that the use of an electric caller is illegal to use on any animal or bird. 1976 amendment I think.
This little netbook would blow up if I tried to open any of them now to show the quote:D

i thought they were afraid of owls..i was shooting in kilkenny the weekend man the crow would near fly over to ye they were very friendly thats why i reckon they stay clear of my usual shooting grounds they are wary now

where there is a good few of them in a wood etc , they try to mob the decoy, ask any falconer about mobbing.

Buy a Weems replica. That will certainly blacken the sky with crows, mags and grey backs. What part of the country are you from? Don't leave any crows lying around or it will spook them off. You can use decoy cradles which will make things even more successful for you. I can get grey backs, mags and crows in on top of me in under a min with the Weems replica. Theres 4 of the lads on this who seen mine in action. It never let me down. Its also a great fox lure which is mainly what its designed for. The owl decoy which one of the guys mentioned with a dead crow tied to it and raise it as high up in the air into a tree is the proper way to work it. A telescopic pole rod would be the best way to elevate it and you can put it in the boot of your car when your finished

There it is. Won't work right if its not used correctly but its easy used. Its very loud. The birds will hear it up to 600yards away. The grey backs and mags especially go mental when they hear it. http://danthompsongamecalls.com/product/predator-calls/weems-replica/.
Here's a video of one in use to give you an idea how to blow it.
http://youtu.be/0MLhA1_aPSs you will need to log onto you tube to watch it tho. He's calling a fox with it but you can hear the mags in video going mad in the distance. Mags will go to the very edge of their territory/perimeter to get close to that call but if you in their area they will come right at you in seconds. I was wondering where you were from as if you were near me i'd take you out for a day and show you good results. I mail you another top notch caller but your pocket be sore as its expensive. Here it is in action. Very hard got http://youtu.be/k9kaoIqZRCk

I was out looking for a fox yesterday and had no joy so i was thinking about packing up when i said i'll make a video to prove how effective the caller is. I'm just waiting to get my friend to upload it onto youtube. Put it this way it was quiet before i started and i blackened the sky with crows in around a minute and they hovered above me. I wasn't hid or anything or wearing any sort of camo but if i was hidden they would land beside me or practicly on me. Mags were going crazy in distance but i was out of their territory. As soon as vidoe is uploaded i will post it on this

Have this one myself.. Find it a mighty job as long as you stay hidden!

Where I knock them there is an 'ol castle and have knocked 40-50 in an average day.. They tend to swoop down on the farmers young kids eating the lunch in the garden.. Under derogation I can knock as many as I please ;)

I can say your dead right
When I'm out with the hawk the crows do try mob her when we're out huntin if she lands in a tree their at her but when they can't see her and their on the ground shell try go for the kill on a crow
I had a magpie swoop in on her while she was flying and she's 3 times bigger than the maggie
Fake owls do work well but using A fake hawk will work better and puttin a crow on the feet will be better
This is a good video on decoys

If any of you are interested I have been selling an instructional cd that teaches you how to blow a hand held crow call. I also go into what the different calls mean as I blow each one. It takes time, you are not going to get good by just practicing on an odd afternoon, but if you stick with it you will get so much pleasure from calling "your own birds" into your setup.

I also have two DVD'S on the market on crow hunting. "The Art of Crow Hunting" has a 551 bird crow hunt. This DVD has a lot to offer "if you pay attention to the different setups" on decoy placement and blind (hide location) location.

The second DVD is called "Crow Shooting" and has several hunts where anywhere from 300 to 447 get shot in mid air.

If you are interested you can go to the educational section over at Crow Busters and find these products. They also sell decoys and all sorts of hand held crow calls. Just go to www.crowbusters.com they will ship anywhere in the world.

Fox Pro Game calls in the USA is another very good company to do business with.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Aronsohn

I just got done watching the film clip "European Crow Calling Instructions" that Hedzball posted. The guy had a nice presentation, but the sound he was making for European crows would call common crows here in the states as well.

The sound does not come from your gut to get that good crow calling sound, it comes from your diaphragm. You have to push the air up from your diaphragm by squeezing your stomach muscles.

I wish he would have blown some call sequences instead of just blowing one note. He has a good sound from the little I heard in the clip.

In one of my dvd's on crow hunting you almost see a crow fly inside the blind with me calling him.

And atleast with the weems replica it takes very little breath to operate compared to other ones that would wear you out blowing your guts up and with some other brands of callers if its reed gets wet by saliva its out of action which never happens with a Weems caller

load the video into a photobucket account or flickr then post it?

I was out myself with my one earlier just for the craic called in a decent flock burning up old carthridges

Your going to have to add me as na friend on facebook to see the video. Its on my wall. Also you will only buy junk when it comes to callers in Ireland. I also have another crow caller which doesn't have you catching your breath while calling. Its about 35pounds. Its called a Rottumtaler Krahenlocker (Enterlocker). Theres none of this crack squeezing your stomach muscles to create the call. Its made out of deer ankler and its reed does all the work. Takes a few mins to master it correctly. Weems is still better I find as Mags, crows and grey backs go mental and fly in to it in seconds If they don't see you ofcoarse same with any caller. If using a decoy owl its best to pluck feathers of other birds and glue them to the decoy. Seen Kristoffer Clausen world famous hunter do it and it looked like a real owl stuffed. No glare of the decoy and looks very real

No you fool they were crows. They were crows and further more your the one who relies on me to call in the grey crows and mags for you every day we are out :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭4200fps

This is the Rottumtaler Krahenlocker (Enterlocker) in action. I didn't get around to testing it out. Its simple to work, just a gentle blow that's all and its magic begins
http://youtu.be/k9kaoIqZRCk. I'm nearly sure it cost me £35 but a proper distress caller I recon is even better and further range. You can hear the grey backs come as far as 400yards away as soon as you blow with a weems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭4200fps

Heres a video of the predator distress caller. If you can make a good animal in distress call, grey crows will think they are in for their easy meal. See how he done his decoy owl. There any amount of callers out there but Ive yet to find one decent caller of any type in Ireland only junk to the highest standard. You pay good money for a good lure for foxing or crow/mag shooting.

Just goes to show that you don't know your ar$e from your elbow if you don't know a flock of Jackdaws from crows! lol
