Best time to work out?

I've recently joined a gym after a year off from exercising (my weight ballooned:(). The reason I stopped exercising was because I got bored with it after about ten years of gym and running.

Since I rejoined the gym, I tried mornings, lunchtimes and evenings for the workouts. However, I find it hard to get going in the morning in the gym as my body hasn't woken up fully yet. Lunchtimes are too rushed with an eye on the clock and I end up going back to the office sweating despite a shower:o. The evenings are more relaxed so no clock watching and my body is fully awake. The problem is, it's an effort to go to the gym (it's just 5 minutes from my job) as I just want to head home.

Is there a "best" time to work out and what can I do to maintain motivation (apart from looking at my fat belly in the mirror:D)

Not to sound smart but you kinda answered your own question. You find it hard in mornings so don't go in morning. Lunch is too rushed so don't go at lunch. Your awake in evening and not in a rush so GO in the evening. Everyone bodies are different and some people prefer to train at different times. Evenings are suitable for you so just get up and go.

Motivation wise you are better off bringing your gym gear to work so the minute you finish just head straight to the gym whether you tired or not. Don't make excuses. You will feel much better after a session in the gym. After a day or 2 of this you will notice you have more energy, you will feel better and won't be as tired. This should give you the motivation to keep going and it will become routine for you to leave work and head the gym without making excuses that your tired.

If you find the gym boring, find an exercise program or class or whatever takes your fancy and follow it. If your have a structured plan you will be more inclined to go the gym and follow it. Ask the gym instructors for advise or get a personal trainer. You will start to enjoy going the gym and it won't feel like a chor.

Oh, I probably should have started with this point but take a look at your diet, making adjustments and knowing what your eating will definitely help with the weight loss. There is some priceless information in the stickies. Have a read of it. If you've any other questions there are some very knowledgable people here, far more than me to give you advise but this should help you get started. Best of luck :).

Cheers. Trouble is, I'm already bored with the gym again despite only going for a few weeks. I'm going to try listening to music to take my mind off the workout. Hopefully it'll help pass the time I spend on the cardio equipment. Treadmills can be very boring.

As for my diet, I couldn't agree more. I've cut out having a late evening snack which I'm sure added greatly to my weight problem. Chocolate, cakes and biscuits every evening was dumb:o. I'm down to a glass of milk and a couple of digestives. I have muesli with a glass of juice in the morning, a couple of bananas mid morning, a tuna or chicken sandwich for lunch with plenty of water all day to keep hydrated. In the gym I drink about a litre and a half of water during my hour long workout and have dinner at home. However I'll check the stickies above to see if there's anything else I can try to get my weight down. Exercising with a big belly isn't easy. Oh to have my abs back:(

I might dust off my bike and get cycling again in lieu of a gym session just to add variety.

Why don't you do different cardio exercises instead of the boring monotonous stuff. Other cardio work like body weight circuits or HIIT are more effective than that boring stuff. You should also incorporate weights and body weigh exercises into your routine. Myfitnesspal is a great way to keep track of your intake. It also has an app if you've a smart phone. You would be surprised what calories are in some foods including fruit. You should talk to the staff in the gym n ask for recommendations and explain that your bored etc. that's what their there for. Even if you had a personal trainer once a week for a couple of weeks just so your pointed in the right direction.

My house mate was exactly like you doing all that boring cardio and getting nowhere. He gave up too. about 3 months ago I made him join my gym and introduced him to training with weights and body weight exercises. After a week he was hooked, he felt better and had way more energy. He was like a different person. We normally train in the evenings but yesterday I couldn't go so he offered to train at 6:30am just so he didn't miss a session. 3 months ago he wouldn't of laughed at doing that. He's now lost well over a stone and inches of his chest and stomach. but the biggest thing for him was getting his diet under control. That's the most important.
