Welcome to the Lisheen positively looking forward golf club thread. Ex paid up South County members €150 for the rest of the year which includes GUI and golf sure.

Ladies club affiliation confirmed last night. Men's next Wednesday all going well. I'm looking forward to having a round up in the new club to make my mind up.

I gave up on the other one myself. Hopefully this thread will be used constructively and be helpful.

So here is what I know...

The Kavabaghs have set up a new club. Totally independent from the old SCGC and even renamed it to break the stigma. They are honouring fully paid up SCGC members with the special 150 rate. Anyone else it's a direct debit mandate form 70 p/m. Affiliation is sorted for the ladies and men's will be sorted next week. Raymie Burns back in the pro shop and doing lessons as on from next week. Officially the club forms July 7th and comps start up then. A new temp comittee to be formed shortly along with voting in ladies and men's captains. No idea what the story with the club house is but I believe the course is in good nick.

Apologies if this is a stupid question but when you say affiliation do you mean with the GUI? As in we would have official handicaps?

I thought, in the other thread the, the general consensus was that it would take a few months?

I like others have moved on as the dream for me was over. I am glad that the course will survive and will be looking out for opens etc so that i can go and play that great course. I hope the new club is free from the crap that went on before and I leave many golfing friends behind. Good luck to them all

I had given up hope when I was told from a reliable source affiliation (with GUI) would takes months. Turns out they have got it sorted and fair play to them. Also I had given up when I heard the 150 wouldn't include GUI and golf sure but it will include it.

As I said I will head up over the next couple weeks for a knock. If its still in the same condition and the vibe from Ramie is good I'll be rejoining.

Here's hoping that all the madness and mis-information that persisted over the last 7 weeks can now finally be put to an end and that those of us who chose to wait to see how events would play out will be rewarded by getting back to play golf on our initially preferred course with our many good friends. More importantly, some tremendous people who lost their jobs 7 weeks ago are back.

Good to hear that everything nearly back up and running. Heard that roughly 100 have signed up so far but third party info so don't quote me! I had held little hope of the affiliation and messiness to be cleared up so have gone to another course for now. Hope to be back playing in scrambles and the odd open with some good friends again soon.all the best lads and cracking that raymie is back to keep the good humour going:)

I hope they get the Wednesday open singles back up and running. Anyone know if there is a website and BRS on the way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭Ding Ding

Played and joined up today. Course in great condition and the course looks fantastic now with the heavy rough giving it a nice definition.

Great news that Raymie will be back next week.

Good buzz about the place today with lots of people playing and signing up, almost 100 already early today.

150 for those who had fully paid in old club, 70 per month those who were on dd and 90 a month for new members joining now and for everybody in 2013 so it's great value.

Kavanagh family all working in biz and very welcoming, lots more equipment acquired this week.

New website being setup, comps next week, GUI in progress so all looking good.

Suggest any existing member who was waiting to see what happened to go up and play and decide for themselves, also a great deal at 90/month for new members.

Left today feeling very excited about the future and itching to get back for next game. It's been a tricky couple of months but just brilliant to back playing golf on a course I love with a great bunch of people.

Fair play to everybody for all the positive posts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 519 ✭✭✭Alrite Chief

90 per month ain't bad I suppose in comparison to what's in the area. The extra rough is no harm to make it more difficult as you can be fairly wild up there and get away with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,690 ✭✭✭Whyner

So does Lisheen not have to go through this long process with the GUI? We can just swap over just like that and go back and start playing comps with our SC handicaps?

I'll probably join during the week. I had no idea all this in-house fighting ever existed so don't see the problem in re-joining as I'll hopefully avoid it if it begins again.

    Hi all
Received the letter from Richard Kavanagh. Thinking about joining the new club for the rest of the year to see how it goes. But I'm not clear on the handicap situation.

According to ILGU letter "the period of grace until the 31st of August is to allow existing female members of the South County golf club to transfer to the new club or transfer to another affiliated club. The period of grace is granted on the basis that a handicap secretary remains in place and manages any cards returned in qualifying or non-qualifying competitions". The letter goes on to say that after that period the new club will have to apply for and be accepted for affiliation in order for handicaps to remain valid.

So Lisheen does not currently have ladies affiliation. My interpretation of the ILGU letter is that in the absence of affiliation of the new club handicaps can only be maintained, and only during the period of grace, if a handicap secretary from South County Golfclub will continue to maintain handicaps for that period.

I'd imagine that the same considerations will apply to the GUI process

I think this is an important point that needs clarification, both in the interests of those who wish to transfer to Lisheen and those who haven't yet decided what they will do but would obviously like to hold their handicaps and play in opens.

    Any views?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 Harmonia

I think there are still a few loops to jump through for ILGU affiliation but at least the ILGU seem positive and supportive. Given the reported fall in GUI and ILGU affiliations throughout the country in the past year or so, I assume both unions want to encourage rather than discourage.

    Looking forward to getting back.

Now that's a very interesting point. Should you join Lisheen golf club does your home club remain 'south county'. In other words are Lisheen taking advantage of the grace period and passing itself off as an affiliated golf club? This puts a spin on things. What if a new member joins with a previous club? Who looks after their handicap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭ShriekingSheet

Glad to hear there's positive stuff happening.

Best of luck to the new club, and to the old SCGC members rejoining.

With any luck Lisheen GC will have a less gay club jumper, which will nearly make the whole thing worthwhile ;)

Club seeker's analysis looks correct and it is a bit previous for Lisheen to say that ILGU affiliation is through. There are obviously steps to be completed but as Harmonia said, the way looks clear.
If you have GUI or ILGU handicap, your home course stands until you change it. What I understand from the ILGU letter, as well as what was said previously, is that South County handicaps will continue to be recognised AS SUCH, until end August, even though that club no longer exists.
After that your South County handicap will lapse and you will need a new "home", which will either be Lisheen (if the affiliation is complete) or wherever you move to.
I don't think this means that members of Lisheen could play a qualifying competition now. It just means that the individual handicap will be recognised in any GUI/ILGU qualifying competition, at least until end August.
I was there over the weekend and there was a steady queue of people signing up. I asked about competitions and was told they are hoping to have "internal" club competitions this weekend. These would not be GUI qualifying but would at least re-introduce some competitive golf.

Presumably the new "temporary committee" will have a Handicap Secretary until such time as the promised AGM and election of regular committees.

Played Sat with a few guys thinking of rejoining (I've moved elsewhere now). I can't see how anyone can say the course is in great condition at all. There is waist high rough all round the bunker on the 18th FFS. You hit wayward shot right and rather than being in the bunker (used to love playing shots from it too), your ball is lost  Needs a massive amount of work/time to get back to the condition it was previously IMO. Hopefully the owners are listening to the right people and will address the course condition sooner rather than later.

Was chatting about the affiliation and it did seem all a bit vague to me too.

That's how it will work, although I don't see many transferring to Lisheen from other clubs until it has shown that it has a future and at least until the affiliations are fully in place. Once that is done, it should attract people as the 2013 subscription is very competitive for such a good course.

There were some visitors from elsewhere having a look over the weekend. Thy were impressed with the course but thought some of the rough was too severe. I think that is something that will have to be sorted out. Its too easy to lose a ball in the middle of the course. That will ruin cards, discourage visitors and hold up play, especially in medals. I hope its just a matter of them getting all the equipment they need. Otherwise they should put up red stakes around the really bad bits.

I don't think it was quite waist high but I agree it is too severe. It looks like there are places where it needs to be cut by hand or by a machine that can work on slopes and tight spots. I was assured they are aware of this and are waiting on some items but you are right that they need to be reminded about it.
Mind you, the greens and fairways are great and the bunkers are no worse than a few other places I've been since the monsoon started!

Or in the bunkers  Seriously though my biggest gripe would be the rough round the lateral water hazards. On the first there is thigh high rough 2 metres either side of the red stakes. It is impossible to have virtual certainty you went in the hazard.

Possibly not but certainly well above the knee ;) Fairways are great because of the lack of footfall but I'd disagree with the greens. They were a bit dried out looking and bumpy in places, although they will come back very quickly if they address it now.

For me the affiliation is the major thing. I'd need to play and see this rough myself but I always felt being wayward off the tee in particular was too forgiving there anyway. You don't complain obviously when your playing poorly but scoring reasonably well but play elsewhere with a few trees lining hole and you won't be getting away with that sort of play. You find most other 'open' design courses have thick rough. Take
Dunmurray springs this time of the year for example. Wild off the tee and you're screwed. The way it should be.

Lets hope this brings the whole affair to a dignified and civil conclusion, clearing the way for a bright new day at Lisheen, or wherever people decide to play.

Lisheen was quite splendid today and it was great to see Raymie back.

When I joined South County I paid for 6 lessons off Raymie but only took 2 of them.

Do you think will he honour the other 4?

I know the easy answer is "ask him" but it will be the weekend at least before I get up there and I don't want to ask him if its a cheeky question.

Yeah was shocked to see the bar open. Spoke to someone there who informed me he's applied for the bar licence and is looking for a caterer. Happy days.

The rough around the bunkers was worked on today but not with the right machine. Bunkers were full of grass cuts. The greens on the other hand are starting to look good again after being treated. The place looks as good as ever otherwise.

No they still haven't met. Someone from the club was to meet with the GUI Wednesday but as of yesterday has not.

Played the course today, in much much better condition than expected. The long rough actually makes the course, mind you in your in it "re-load". Greens in great condition maybe a little slow but a cut would have them super. Fairways absolutely cracking maybe from the lack of footfall best around.

Good buzz about the place so here's to Lisheen Springs G&CC.

Great to see the pro shop back open and Raymie and Brendan in good form.

Big time, very naff, let's just call it Lisheen, which is the name of the river which flows through the course and the slip road (for those that don't know) There is also a nearby area called Lisheens

Not that busy when i was up this Saturday, A fair amount out on course and a good few up paying the subs. You'd best can call the pro shop and book with one of the guys there they are still waiting on the online system to be set up.

Yes, both men's and ladies clubs officially passed motions to be disbanded.
Handicaps are ok until such time as the GUI plug the plug, could be anything from 6 weeks to 6 months they said.
    Ladies have until 31 August.
Interestingly, talk was that lisheen haven't even had preliminary meeting with GUI yet!
They did meet ilgu and it apparently went well , but they are also relying on the old handicaps still, and there wont be proper comps up there for a while.

Was there any information last night about "other golfing options", as mentioned in the invitation to the meeting?
