Sore arm muscles

I recently joined a gym to get fit again as I stopped running last year due to boredom at running round the same old circuits tbh. The fact that i put on over a stone in weight has sent me back exercising.

While I've managed to use the treadmills in the gym with no side effects, I've got some very sore and stiff muscles from using the weight machines, most noticably in my biceps and triceps. Now I have taken it easy using light weights (30kg), doing the reps nice and smoothly, in two groups of twenty but my arm muscles are pretty painful. Do I leave the weights alone or "push through the pain" until my arm muscles get used to the workout?

just to be clear, is the pain the day after or during the workout?

if it's the day after, it's pretty normal, working out you basically tear your muscles, on your rest days they then repair themselves which is what makes you stronger. you need the rest days to let the muscles repair. seen some people who beleive if you don't have pains the following day you didn't work hard enough

thing is, let the pain subside before you lift again.

As was previously mentioned if it's after your workout or the days after then its most likely DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness)

If it's painful during the exercise then you should stop what you're doing and ask one of the trainers to assess your technique to ensure that you are doing it right.

    Thanks for the replies.

Funnily enough, there is no pain when I'm using the weight machines but the following day, my muscles are pretty sore and stiff. I guess it's just them getting used to exercising after a 6 year layoff from using weights. I'm only going to the gym every second day so my arms will have a rest day in between sessions.

As for technique, I'm doing the reps slow and smoothly. One thing I would like to know though is do you breath in or out when pushing on the weight,e.g. a bench press, do I breath out when pushing the weight or breath in?
