I'm 27 now, and still haven't managed to complete a degree course - so this gives me hope.
    Thank you for that :)

Hopefully it win't take you as long but I have both studied with and taught people in theirr 50s. So you still have time.

Did a degree and masters in a field of study that I had no interest in. Got a 2.1 in both degrees, Couldn't get a job in that field of study and now I'm working in a factory packing boxes for last five years. My education went to good use didn't it? But can't be fussy in this economic climate I guess.

Yes, I did but it took me a while to realise it. :) I struggled through college but am very glad I finished what I started.

I'm going to suggest something a bit wild and crazy to you, and I want you to keep an open mind about it before dismissing it out of hand:

You should be asking YOURSELF what you want to study, and not people on the internet who know nothing about you ;)

I know, like I said. Crazy talk :P

Great thread. It looks like my encouraging my daughter to take a year out and go to France as an au pair is a good idea. Takes the pressure out of the LC for her, gives her a bit more time to decide what she wants to do in life and will better her French. :D

    I'm not laughing anymore. :(

Having gone to both UL and LIT, UL students dont have much to laugh about IMO

EDIT: I regret both my choices of college, I dont like computers anymore

I've never quite understood the blanket disdain for Arts degrees. It is not a homogenous degree and covers a number of highly important, complex subjects areas that dont exist in any other type of degree. For example, I studied archaeology, should I expect future employers to turn around and tell me that a BA isnt worth the paper its printed on when archaeology IS an arts subject in most countries. I assume its much the same for a number of the arts subjects.

(In saying all this, there are no archaeology employers so its a moot point anyway!)

    /rant

A lot of people on here saying they entered college as a mature student which is great to see. I went back at 24 to study the subject I've always wanted to. This successful degree followed two degree attempts in two different universities in an entirely different field (which I hated) and a short, simple diploma which is probably useless. Im now continuing on to a masters, and while I know there is absolutely no work after my education I still know I made the right decision for myself. I couldnt be happier with my choice of course as an adult. My choice of course as a young man was horrible (In saying this however, I was forced into a different area by lack of points rather then naiveté).

I would have to say yes. I picked Science and it has led to a career which I initially enjoyed (testing of stability samples) but 5 years on, I have absolutely no interest in anything but the money. Thing is, the money, holidays and commute and brilliant so I can deal with the fact that I have no passion or interest in the industry anymore. Plus we are kind of recession-proof in that people have job hopped from one place to another. Whereas if i was stuck in a construction/engineering/retail job I may not have that choice...

I studied electronic engineering for four years and got an honours degree out of it but i regret doing it. Didnt get a job out of it and i never really enjoyed the course anyway.

If i could go back in time and choose again i would have pursued psychology instead.

I suppose having the degree isnt a bad thing though. It at least looks a bit impressive on a cv.

I made the perfect choice for me and didn't go to college. However, I have two daughters, the eldest will begin primary school in September. I hope they both go on and enjoy school more than I did. I hated each and every second I spent in a classroom. My wish for them is that they would go to college but not immediately after they finish school. Take a year out, travel, gain some real world experience and then decide what to do with their lives. College can wait for them to make the choices that suit them best.

i'm undecided. i work in a different job than anything that my education would have been tailored towards, but a lot of the stuff i learned during it has come in quite handy

I studied Architectural Technology, had great fun during my time in the college though the work load was ridiculous so I'd very few nights out; Anyhow I got a well paying job straight out of college, loved my job and got as much overtime as I wanted.

So I made the right choice for me but the wrong choice for the future; how was I to know that the building industry would collapse

Second time round I made the right choice for me again. I studied Computing and now I'm back in a job that I love. I just hope this industries future is secure.

School / life in general for me was a twenty year long cluster fuck growing up. Did I make the right choices? I did animation in a shit hole PLC college - I couldn't care less about animation. Dropped out, worked on building sites in Holland for a while, came back did worse work - banking (it was so easy in those days to get a bank job). After a few years I began doing what I actually like - theatre. Eventually got a degree, quit the bank, did a masters then left the old country for good. Now shacked up in East Asia directing school musicals during the day and working on my own stuff in my spare time - did I make the right choices growing up? Absolutely not - other people made shit choices for me. Am I making the right choices now? I think so - at least I can't blame family / friends / society any more.

Just do what you're passionate in, seriously. Life is too short to become embittered by other people's ideas of what's 'best for you'. If you end up doing business and French then do something artistic on the side, fashion design, theatre auditions, whatever... the buisness and French might actually help you later, no reason you can't do both?

I know i was actually thinking of that! Seeing as France is a fashion capital it could come together!! Thanks a mill.

 As if you or anyone else was unable to understand what she was saying!
I don't see why you'd bother to pick me up on that when I'm simply on this for advice.

Some people have nothing better to do than sit around and make snide comments about other peoples' grammar/spelling.

To keep thread on-topic, I'd echo Spore's post above and tell you to just do what you wanna do. Friend of mine did a course he didn't really want because his parents pushed him into it, and it's only now, 4 years later, that he's able to pursue what he really wants. Worry about jobs and stuff later; for the mean time focus on what you're passionate about and what you'll enjoy studying. Take it from me; life's too short to be stuck in a course that won't lead you to what you really want.

I can't spell to save my life, but I'm so sick of teenagers and their laziness and txt spk.
It's actually even in the charter - it says not to use txt spk.
How is anyone going to do a college course if they have no idea how to construct a sentence ffs?!
    Anyway, I'll leave it there.
Was the best advice she'll get though.
When did people here get so sensitive anyway?!

I can't spell to save my life, but I'm so sick of teenagers and their laziness and txt spk.

There was one single txt spk word in her whole post (tho). A couple of spelling mistakes but not something you wouldn't be able to understand.

Itz nt lyk hr hol pst woz wrttn lyk dis or anytng!!1!!
Transl: It's not like her whole post was written like this (in txt spk) or anything!!one!!
It's actually even in the charter - it says not to use txt spk.

It also says not to be a Grammar Nazi, I believe.....though you conveniently ignored that one.
How is anyone going to do a college course if they have no idea how to construct a sentence ffs?!

Yeah, 'cause how a person writes in an informal internet forum environment is exactly the same as how they write on a college assignment. I know plenty of people older than the OP that use txt spk occasionally online. Guess what? Some of them even graduated from college! *shock horror*
    Anyway, I'll leave it there.
Was the best advice she'll get though.

Good, I'd like to leave it there too 'cause I don't wanna drag this thread off-topic (and apologies to the Mods if this is straying too far into OT territory.) I just found your post unnecessary and quite insulting; you could have politely advised her to use spellcheck or whatever rather than jump in with a sarcastic "OH U SHUD STUDY ENGLISH LOOOOOL" comment.

I studied the right general area but looking back I think I specialised in the wrong subject. That said I now do nothing to do with my degree so in the end it's probably not that important, I just would have preferred from my own interest to do a different specialisation.

Hah, I had the opposite experience. My parents wanted me to do an engineering course because I like making things, but since it was 5 years(4 for degree and 1 for pre-eng because I didn't have honours maths) I wouldn't hear of it. Instead I chose a 3 year Arts degree in archaeology and history, which I loved as a hobby but absolutely HATED studying. "Upper Paleolithic art is best interpreted in terms of shamanic trances. Discuss":confused:

Got my degree eventually, then after 3 years working in retail I'm hopefully going back to do engineering, which I've always had an interest in. Just pray the grant gods are kind. Moral of the story: My mother is always right.

I am doing Pharmacy at the moment. I really enjoy it. I don't know if I will sell out and do community or just do hospital though.
