I wouldn't bet against it, even the 3 minutes trailers have been better than half the **** I've seen in the cinema this year. Nolan is a god and with bale and hardy you cannot fail

Those are odd ways of spelling The Raid.

I was really hoping Prometheus would have been it but unfortunately not, maybe Judge Dread will be a big hit. So far I would give it to the Avengers.

As already said, there's another 6 months left in 2012, but my top 10 favourite film so far this year would be: Margaret, The Descendants, Young Adult, Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Raid, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Café de Flore, Womb, Moonrise Kingdom and The Kid with a Bike.

Some of those films will almost certainly be demoted to "honourable mentions" by year end, but given that we tend to get all the prestige films in January, I suspect my final top 10 won't differ hugely.

The hobbit, taken 2 and TDKR still to come... it's gonna be a tough one :)

Between the avengers and the raid for me. Raid really caught me off guard which is rare while the avengers lived up to my expectations which is even rarer.

Hard to not see TDKR knocking them out of the park though. Taken 2 will hopefully be as wonderful ad the first and give the raid a run.

TBH I have a terrible feeling that TDKR is going to leave me disappointed. What I loved most about TDK was the whole Michael Mann vibe. So far I'm getting a distinct Bond vibe from TDKR, which is exactly what I didn't like about Begins.

As far as the rest of the year goes, off the top of my head the following films are on my radar: The Master, Lawless, Killing Them Softly, On the Road, Savages, Zero Dark Thirty, Amour, Safety Not Guaranteed, Sound of My Voice, Rust & Bone.

Other films I'm excited about but which probably won't get released here until early next year: The Impossible, Django Unchained, To the Wonder, Lincoln, Mud.

I'm still amazed at how high people are ranking The Avengers. I almost believe I saw a different film than most others :pac: It was perfectly fine for what it was, but superlatives are not what spring to mind when describing the film. Even The Hunger Games - which, for all its flaws, is actually a rather entertaining film - provided more surprises. "Best moderately entertaining superhero movie of May 2012" perhaps :P

Seen tonnes of brilliant films this year already. Margaret, Martha Marcy..., The Raid, Himizu, Woodsman and the Rain, Children Who Chase Voices from Deep Below, Moinseur Lazhar, Cabin in the Woods, From Up on Poppy Hill (which is slight, but slight done beautifully), Moonrise Kingdom, Tabloid (I think that was a January release?), The Kid with a Bike, The Descendants and the Turin Horse are the real upper echelon films so far. And then there's stuff like Your Sister's Sister, Young Adult, Killer Joe, Mysteries of Lisbon, Le Havre, Cafe de Flore, Cosmopolis... wouldn't call them 'amazing' films, but certainly well worthy of one's time. Haven't gotten around to some others I really wanted to see, like This Is Not A Film. Who can tell what 2012 Part Two will bring (other than the apocalypse, nash): but given some of the people who have films due out I can forsee some gems on the horizon. Particularly excited for Holy Motors, The Master, Amour and Eva 3.0 (if someone has the good sense to show it over here as soon as humanly possible). Plus all those potential surprises like Cloud Atlus (I'm not optimistic on that one, though), Wreck it Ralph, Looper etc... 2012 is already so much more than just the year of superhero movies.

For me, The Grey, Cabin in the Woods, The Raid and to a lesser degree Avengers. Prometheus unfortunately let itself down badly but wasnt terrible.

Still a good few movies to be released this year that I would be looking forward to. All in all its already a better year than last.

loved the avengers, so far its way out in front for me personally, i think it just worked and was a great pay off for all the work that had gone into it with so many lead up films,

to a lesser extent i really enjoyed get the gringo (AKA how i spent my summer vacation), and god bless america, also the raid was good fun, as was chronicle, 21 jump street and project X, i also really liked act of valor aswell as much as people love saying it a recruitment film (YEAH AMERICA thumping chest:rolleyes:) it was a good film,

disappointments for me are the grey, haywire, this means war and wunderlust, all films that i was really looking forward to but just didnt really live up to there potential,

also there a fair bit of meh material ive also seen and probably some decent stuff thats past me by that ill get to on DVD at some point,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

so far for me, The Descendants, The Grey, The Raid, The Avengers, The Cabin In The Woods (my there are a lot of movies with "The" in the title this year)

the blockbusters so far have been meh save for Avengers, Snow White showed promise but was kinda dull in places, Theron and Hemsworth were good though. MIB3 had its moments, and a really suprisingly emotional ending I didnt expect. Battleship was noisy nonsense, forgettable, John Carter was ok, not godawful but not great.

biggest disappointment is Prometheus, I dont know why people just cant see its a bad film, a gorgeous one, but a bad film nonetheless, Fassbender and the visuals make it worth a watch but it doesnt deserve the depth of discussion about it. Hunger Games was a surprise not knowing anything about the books.

If Young Adult worth a watch? I like Theron and Patrick Wilson, but I despise Diablo Cody's writing.

    I wouldn't have it my top 10 if I didn't think so. ;)

I had fairly low expectations going in and spent the first 10 minutes rolling my eyes at some of Cody's writing, but the film quickly won me over and made me laugh out loud several times. I'm not exactly a fan of Cody or Reitman (who I think is an asshole), but Theron owns the film. She's totally channeling that Bill Murray thing of being likeably unlikeable throughout. The film is worth watching just for her performance.

    1. This Is Not a Film
    2. The Raid
    3. Carnage
    4. Cosmopolis
    5. The Grey
    6. The Descendants
    7. Turin Horse
    8. The Artist
    9. Shame
    10. Jeff Who Lives At Home

I guess Prometheus, The Avengers and Cabin in the Woods would be runners up. I can't overstate what a powerful and important piece of filmmaking This Is Not a Film is though. It works on so many levels.

Seeing Himizu on Wednesday and if it's at least on the same level as his past 3 movies it'll get a top 3 spot easily.

I dont mind Reitman so much, I really liked Up In The Air but thats more because of the three central actors who I all really like, not a great movie but its charming enough.

not dissing anyone's opinion this is just mine, I thought the Grey was awful, it was so corny and anyone who watches animal planet would not get suckered in by their portrayal of "Evil Man eating wolves" which is total bull****. It could have been killer Lemmings which would have been as likely to attack man as wolves.
Also I was half expecting the wolves to throw one of their victims heads at the survivors in revenge for what the human done earlier in the film or cut the rope when that guy with the glasses was crawling across it really nothing was beyond this film

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,464 ✭✭✭e_e

I read that criticism a lot but it's clear as day to me that the wolves are not to be taken as an attempt at realism by the filmmakers. Not every film needs a documentary like precision and they are also there to represent death creeping over each character. I think too many people take everything in cinema on a literal level and I don't think it helps movies like this.

They were suppose to be Wolves.

I guess you could say the same about the classic JAWS in relation to sharks. Not that the grey is as good as JAWS but it was a very good film imo, and there was more to it than just the wolves.
Sure half of them where not even killed by the wolves
    . So your wrong :P

The filmmakers intended them to be wolves, not metaphors for death! Thats just fan theory to make the film better than it actually is.

Have you got proof of that? I still think the film is thrilling and emotionally compelling regardless of this, that the film can be seen from different perspectives only works in its favor. But I can't imagine why anyone would even watch the movie to begin with if they have a bias against treating something in a more mystical, less obvious way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8OW2ehY3z4 Check from about 1.30 on.

So the intention was not really to depict wolves as they really are but to add some fantasy to the idea of what wolves really are.
Seemed quite obvious to me when I was watching the film. So the idea that wolves wouldnt look like that or act that way in real life was not a problem for me because the films makers never intended them to. Not fully anyway

'The Grey' is the best film for me so far this year, Nesson and the supporting cast are excellent. The film is tight with a good script.

With all the chest pumping and battling the elements against all odds, its really about making peace with one's own mortality. Death comes to us all in many shapes and forms. but then it works on different levels for everyone, perfect ending too.

Can't say I noticed the "bad" wolf effects. I don't think it really matters, for once a decent call was made and the budget was spent on the more important things.

Like Jaws, filmmakers peddled misconceptions to make a film. Simple as that.

The Academy isn't going to give best picture to a comic book movie.

Although it deserved the nod ahead of The Reader in my view, but The Wrestler probably deserved it more than both and it also missed out. With the increased amount of allowed selections, if TDKR is similar in quality to TDK, I think we could see a nomination for it, which would be a great achievement.

The first six months of releases has been rather excellent and am looking forward to seeing what the next six months has to offer.

The Descendants, The Artist, Carnage and The Raid have been very notable releases for me but there's been some absolute gems like Martha Macy May Marlene, Into The Abyss, Being Elmo: A Puppeteers Journey and The Angel's Share which are defintely worth checking out when they're released on Blu-Ray/DVD.

I think it's been a pretty good year for cinema releases thus far and I've enjoyed seeing many of the visual treats on offer. Hopefully the second half of the year produces the same calibre of film.

That reminds me, I really need to catch Angel's Share before it leaves the cinema. I've heard great things about it.

I also forgot Shame came out this year. It might have just made my earlier list had I remembered.

The Oscar Winning Muppets (I believe that is its official title now) was a huge highlight for me. The Avengers was another as I was not expecting it to live up to the hype.
The Dictator is my favourite comedy so far this year.
Prometheus (not worth the wait) and The Descendants (not worth the lavish praise/awards it got) were the two biggest disappointments for me. Both were fairly average films IMO.
The Devil Inside has got to be the worst I've seen in the cinema this year so far.
Most anticipated: The Dark Knight Rises - although I'm not expecting it to be anywhere near as good as TDK and can imagine many will be disappointed upon release. If they can give the trilogy a solid ending without doing anything stupid I will be very happy..
The 'Dark Horse' film: Dredd - I have a feeling this will be a pleasant surprise.
    Golden Oldie Award: Jaws.
Films I'm sad I missed in the cinema: The Raid and The Artist.

There are plenty of other movies I'm looking forward to including Taken 2, Expendables 2, Amazing Spider-Man and Django Unchained. It's been a good year for movies and hopefully it will continue.

Must bookmark this post and see if I feel the same when the annual boards film awards come along.

Did you even watch the film? facing death is the central theme of the film, and the wolves are always shown as these ethereal creatures, not at all like real wolves.

ethereal creatures? They were on screen a fair bit and it was just bad cgi and behaviour

Look, you go ahead and believe that they werent intended to be real wolves, just 'metaphors for death' to explain away bad cgi and bad grey wolf behaviour, whatever floats your boat tbh!

Was Chronicle out this year? I thought that was excellent. The end was...OK, but the lead up was really well done. I don't normally like those "first person" movies, but this one was pretty good. The characters were good. Although I felt the main guy may have overacted the end bit.

Anyway! Not saying its the best movie ever or 2012's, just one that comes to mind.

Good point actually. I never thought about that. Perhaps the bottles were a metaphor for facing ones fears.
Although I do hesitate to attach loose metaphors to a film like The Grey in an attempt to excuse perceived flaws in the film. We could probably do taht for any silly movie and declare it genius if that is the case.
