Currently living in Saudi Arabia so pretty much downloading everything suggesed here. Finding English language channels here is tough, and I get excited whenever anything reaches 100%. I have watched a load of sh1te purely out of time (my laptop) invested. I have never been as mad as when I got excited about

    Community.........................

Jesus Christ. What an ultimate pile of sh1te.

Advice on what else to ignore would be greatly appreciated.

Community is ridiculously good IMO but humour is subjective, I can understand why some people wouldn't like it.

Personally, for me it's Mad Men! I was told to give it a go, watch a couple of episodes....... it was sh*t! Then I was told "you have to watch some more".......... it was still sh*t!

"Watch some more" they said......... and I got to the end of Season 1 and it was STILL sh*t!

"Ah you have to watch more than Season 1"

    I will in my arse!

Fell asleep during 3 attempts of trying to get through episode 1 of mad men.

Have watched 5 eps of community and not my buzz at all. And I dont think that it's a case of me missing any smart humour (which I can hold my hands up to regarding other shows). In my opinion its not funny and full of incredibly annoying people.

Admittedly the first few episodes of Season 1 (possibly up 'til episode 10) aren't anything special, but after that it just goes from strength til strength.

    This is from episode #10

I watched the whole 1st season of Mad Men. I just don't like it! LOVE COMMUNITY though.

For me it has to be Boss. I know this is sacred TV forum stuff but I tried the first 4 episodes (There's only 6). 4 hours I'll never get back.

Also, the end scenes are amazing

Boss and Mad Men too.... *shrug*

The West Wing - how can anyone enjoy this muck?
The Wire - not because it's awful but because even after two seasons I'm not gone on it but still won't give up on it like I would have if people didn't keep banging on about how great it is. Watching something out of a sort of dogged spite is no way to enjoy TV.

These are outweighed many times over by the great shows I've come to know about through this forum though, and I thank everyone who has suggested a good show to me that I would otherwise never have known about.

On a slightly different note, is there anyone who does not like Archer? I'd probably never trust such a person again.

I don't mind Community, but that clip is like something from a poor episode of Scrubs or other middle of the road comedy.

This thread is a great way for me to lose respect for a number of posters :)

'The Inbetweeners' - Lots here recommended it. It's merely okay but it's full of school boy humour that I never even grew into to grow out of.

OP is clearly Streets Behind. I doubt we can Chang your mind now so it's your loss.

Tbh I've loved every show that this forum has recommended. As a whole I'd say we're a group with very good taste. Even Richard Dower sometimes picks a goodun'

Hmm...I was gonna get started on Community soon but I'm not entirely sure now. I guess I'll give the first episode a go anyway and see what it's like.

Give it half a season, get to know everyone.
When I started, I ended up watching the first 2 seasons in about a week and a half.

Yep it takes a few episodes to get into it. Don't judge it on the pilot alone!

Couldn't really get in to Mad Men myself either. Watched about 5 episodes. I didn't think it was bad, guess it just wasn't my thing.

I probably am 'streets behind', but whats wrong with that? Am I allowed to play catch up?!

And in fact its because of this thread I made it a good bit past episode 5 and am actually enjoying Community now, so it did Chang my mind. You have to admit though Jeff and Britta were very punchable to begin with.

"Streets Behind" is a reference made towards the end of season 1...

See i like the way you worded that it wasnt really your thing :).
Theres no harm in not liking something but some people get on my nerves when you try and recommend a tv or film to them.

Nah thats ****e i wont watch that its boring not even funny etc.......

Ffs give it a chance and try watching it only natural your gonna hate it if your so pig headed about it.

Game of thrones is one everyone keeps on at me about to watch i guess ill get around to it at some stage and put proper time into it.

From what i have seen of it alot of it has just went over my head :P.

Watched The Shield and loved it from start to finish (one of the best series I've ever watched IMO) so then I was told that if I liked the Shield, I'd love The Wire.

God were they wrong.. Maybe I got a bad copy but I found them all very hard to understand and the swearing seemed very forced - more "hey we're on HBO, lets go nuts!" than necessary for the story/"realness" of the show.

Gave up after the 2nd episode.

The West Wing... this one I wouldn't mind watching as I can see potential but it's such an effort trying to keep up with them as they rush around looking important and talking a mile a minute that I don't know if I can be bothered :)

I'll go against the majority here and say I loved Mad Men although it did take me a few episodes to get into it and the quality has dropped dramatically this year IMO. I'm about 5/6 episodes behind and in no rush.

Looking forward to ep3 of Dallas 2012 tonight though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,709 ✭✭✭shrewdness

The thing I found with The Wire was that it really did take a good half season(for me anyway) to properly get into it, as there are so many different characters all getting screentime and it takes some time to recognise who everyone is and what their role is/their position in the police or street hierarchy. And some characters are hard to understand at first, especially some of the street and drug slang, but you pick it up quick enough I found. Once I got used to all that and the characters, I was hooked, watched the whole 5 seasons in a few weeks. Seasons 3 and 4 are the finest television I've seen. My favourite show ever, only thing that comes close for me is Breaking Bad.

As for the original question, I could never get into Mad Men. Probably didn't give it a proper chance which kinda goes against everything I've said so far! I might give it another go when I get the time.

I never get the dislike of Mad Men. It's easily amongst the smartest, most consistent shows ever made, with such a brilliant cast of characters and an infectious setting. But for every fan there seems to one or two non-converts. It's just strange to me as from my perspective I just can't imagine anyone not getting sucked into its rhythm - it's one of the few shows that had me hooked from the first episode. Many of the other greats - from the West Wing to The Shield - probably took me a good few episodes, even seasons to adjust (The Wire > The Shield was a particularly nasty jump, and took until at least season 3 or 4 of the Shield for the addiction to set in). But Mad Men? Have been engrossed since the pilot.

    +1

For me, the writing has been consistently sharp, casting, direction and performance are top-notch and the at times non-linear narrative has given compelling insight into the back story.

On Boards recommendation, I also watched Breaking Bad and devoured four Seasons in about three weeks - love that show. But it's a different beast to Mad Men - it's less intricate, more immediate and requires considerably less effort to engage with.

For me, The Wire, The Soprano's, Breaking Bad & Mad Men have delivered some staggeringly well crafted TV. I've also watched 2 Seasons of Game of Thrones, which gets a lot of love here - it's eminently watch-able but simply nowhere near the above in terms of quality.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Much as a I love Mad Men I only recommend it to selected people as I know 3/4 people just won't like it. I understand why they don't like it, even if they're wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,516 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Havent ever really "gotten" Mad Men, i still watch the new episodes if theres nothing else to going on but ive never been able to see why people rave about it so much.

For people iffy about the west wing it doesnt get into its stride till about episode 4 when youve started getting to know the characters, and ill reiterate that the season 2 finale, Two Cathedrals, is in my opinion one of the best episodes of television of all time

I watched Mad Men after recommendations from pratically everyone I know who owns a telly, but I just thought it was alright. I watched most of season 1 but the storyline didn't grip me in the least, and it seemed to be nothing so much as a triumph of style over substance. I might give it another go though.

Yeah, Two Cathedrals is the point when the West Wing just sinks its claws in big time. I really liked the show up until then, but that episode is the perfect example of where it takes quite some time for something to truly click.

TV's a funny medium, actually. Don't think there's any other artform where it can take ten, twenty, thirty hours of commitment to truly 'get it'. Dollhouse was really nothing until the 'lost' finale of season one. I don't think Breaking Bad really becomes vital television until season three. Same with the Shield: might even be a little later in that case (perhaps even the last season). But it can take time for almost any show to hit its stride, and any show I've been strongly recommended has always eventually paid dividends, even if it can take whole seasons to be truly converted. There's exceptions - Firefly! - but not many. Watching Battlestar Galactica at the moment, and it wasn't until season two when I realised all the reasons why it's one of the most deservedly acclaimed and beloved TV shows.

There's a lot of Breaking Bad that's boring and tedious (basically anything to do with Skylar). It's a strength and weakness in the show that they basically try to root it in reality. Where other shows would cheat and leave plot holes and ignore bits that are inconvenient BB doesn't do that which is why it's a drama and not just an action show.
There's 7 episodes in the truncated series 1 (shortened due to the writer's strike) so, if you not interested in watching another episode by the end of that then it's probably not for you.

I agree with whoever said above that Mad Men has dropped in quality with the rot setting in towards the end of series 4. I think that's a minority opinion though.

You should try the Sopranos again. Space the episodes out and don't rush through them. One of the best things I've ever seen.
Totally agree with you regarding the wire, I'm a bit mixed with Mad men, I watch it but I still don't know if I like it.

I gave it five episodes and quit

    Not for me

I would hate to of not watched Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc. yet. Watching them from the get go with no expectations or hype just adds to the overall enjoyment, now with everyone saying "OMG ITZ LIKE DA BEST THING EVAAA, U NEED 2 WATCH IT" it can really lead you to over hyping it and thus lead you to not liking the final result.

I wouldn't mind so much but it was towards the end of series 2 that I started watching so I'd already missed the first and best season.

You can't skip episodes! You always have to start from the start. And season 1 was some great TV. I remember watching it before Lost was Lost and I loved it! Eventually fell out of love with that program though.

Suits. Liked the pilot and maybe two episodes after that but it just got so predictable, Stopped watching after the fifth.

Touch. Watched four episodes, Just wasn't for me. Reminded me a little of Lost. In that it will probably lead to nothing.

Watched all available seasons of Californication, found it very funny. I'm on season 5 of Breaking Bad, what a show. Also started to watch Boardwalk Empire, looks good.

Yeah the Wire was near instant with me too. But from the long-form, slow-paced marathon of The Wire to the insane immediacy of The Shield was a serious shock to the system. More 'stuff' happens in the first episode of The Shield than entire seasons of The Wire :pac: Took me ages to get through the first series or two, but the payoffs from season three onwards are totally worth it. I still think The Shield may have the finest conclusion of any television series ever made.

Exact same experience here, I misremembered in my last post. :pac: After the first episode of The Shield I was blown away yet didn't go back to it for 6 months or so then when I did I got about half a dozen episodes in before dropping it again. It's strange how the first episode didn't hook me despite the obvious reason it should have. Completely agree about the finale as well, probably my favorite episode of anything ever, incredible stuff.

Glee. The initial reviews here were pretty decent so I gave it a go but after the first reasonably funny episode it was a real WTF show. I stuck it out until the Joss Whedon episode, thinking that if he liked it I must be missing something. But christ is that show a steaming turd.

I watched a few eps of Glee. The pilot made it out to be a high school show set around the outsiders who were in a Glee club. But then after the pilot it became a musical that used popular songs so I stopped watching. I did watch Joss's episode though.
Think only show I watched because Joss liked it(apart from his own) was Veronica Mars. And that was brilliant. Even had Joss in an episode.

As for Mad Men, I watched the first season but had to force myself to get through it. Don't think will watch any more
