Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. 2012 Cooking Club Week 25: Mars Bar Treats

Howdy doody cookeroonies! Apologies that this post is a couple of days early this week: my cousin from Australia is coming to visit tomorrow and I might not get time to post this then...what with all the squealing, jumping up and down and elbow-waggling we'll be doing to finally be reunited after twenty years. :)

These tasty little delights are based on the fabled Avoca Mars Bar squares/biscuits/treats. They are incredibly simple to make, but hugely delicious, and whenever I bring them anywhere I am inundated with texts the next day looking for the recipe. This is a tray of pure love. (Also a tray of heart attack.) So...enjoy. :)

    2zgt0mb.jpg

    Ingredients:

    400g of Mars bars (I used 7 x 58g Mars bars from a multi-pack)
    250g Rice Krispie-type cereal
    200g butter
    1/4 tsp salt
200g milk chocolate, for topping (I used Milka)

    What to do:

    1. Chop the Mars bars and the butter into cubes, and put into a heat-proof bowl over a pot of barely simmering water to melt. Try not to eat too many of the Mars bar chunks. Add the salt. Use a balloon whisk to help it all along.

At this point, the butter sometimes separates from the Mars bar mixture. Don't panic if this happens! Just use your electric whisk to emulsify the mixture for a couple of minutes, til it looks like this.

    2. Get your largest mixing bowl, and weigh out into it 250g of Rice Krispies. Pour in the Mars bar/butter mixture and combine with a metal spoon, turning until all the krispies are coated. This requires a little patience. You might think there isn't enough mixture at first...but trust me; there will be.

    3. Grease and line with parchment paper a rectangular baking dish. Leave a couple of inches of parchment up around the edges of the dish. I used my lasagna dish. Press the mixture into it, flattening with clean palms.

    4. Melt the milk chocolate (90 seconds in the microwave did it for me) and spread over the top. Pop in the fridge to set.

    2641jlw.jpg

    5. Once set, remove from the dish by simply lifting the mixture out in one slab with the edges of the parchment. Cut into squares and share out to happy people to thunderous applause. :)

If you are extra fat like me, take the recipe above and add malteasers, some cut up mini mars bars, mini milky ways and chunks of twix bars while mixing with the rice krispies. Me and my sister make these using one of those Mars fun packs as well as a pack of regular mars bars :o

Health conscious people stick to the original recipe above, which looks delicious. You can tell yourself its healthy as you have not added the stuff I add :pac:

I made these these last week for my sons school cake sale.

I used the Lidl bella rom chocolate, it's great for cooking with, I used half milk chocolate and half white chocolate for the top in a marble effect.

    Thanks - these were fab!

I halved the recipe as there are only 2 of us in the house.. and it still made 16 decent size squares!! Am all mars bar treated out, and am going to give the rest to my oh bring into work.

Sorry about the quality of the photo. It was taken with my phone.

    Thanks again!

Oh... I might have to reconsider making yet another batch of caramel squares for the party this weekend but perhaps I should make a test batch first

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,292 ✭✭✭Mrs Fox

Took the tray out of the fridge.
Turned my back to reach for the knife.
Impatient husband pounced and broke a big chunk out.

By the way, this batch made 18 laaaaaaaarge treats and costed me €7.43 in total.

I made these last Saturday and they still taste crispy and yummy. I have them in a biscuit tin box in the fridge.

Made these last night for the gang in work.

Tried one. Didn't really like it so I tried another....and another...and another.....

    Round 2.
I've just made a quick dash to the local convenience for 7 mars bars, a block of butter and 2 large bars of milk chocolate.
    I. Just. Cannot. Resist. The. Temptation.
    Help.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,504 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

These are in the fridge now. 200g of chocolate didn't come anywhere near covering them. Even 400g left me a good bit shy. I'm not sure if I spread them out too much or didn't compact them enough and the chocolate leaked through.

  • Moderators Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭ChewChew

    I used 400g of chocolate Too ;)

Batch I made last night, I ran out of rice krispies so I threw in some coco pop, sugar puffs and handfuls of bran flakes. Kids still loved them and I must admit, they are just as nice!!! Nom!!!

That's what i thought initially but once set and sliced, I thought it was just enough. Any more would make it a bit sickly. At least that's what I think.

My work helped devour these, great recipe OP. My OH also brought loads into her work, they loved them. I'll definitely be making these again.

200g of chocolate just about covered the top of my lasagne dish btw. I used the milka with dime bits in it that the €2 shop had.

OMG these look amazing have to try them, thanks so much for sharing :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

Second I was invited to a BBQ I knew I had to make these, cause I was dying for a few myself but needed badly people to share the tray with :pac: I was feeling filthy and added cut up Twix and Malteasers. The top chocolate is this cheap stuff cause Canadians don't appreciate good chocolate, but it was ok as its mostly the Mars Bar you taste! And everyone was raving about them and wanted the recipe :D

Made a smaller version of this last night.
    1 Mars Bar
    30g Cocopops
    25g butter

Was a bit wetter looking than the OP. not sure is thats due to slightly higher ratios of mars bar, or if Coco Pops are denser - probably both tbh.

    But was still amazing.

Thanks for the lovely recipe neuro-praxis - and for all the contributions you've made round here particularly in the cooking section. You revolutionised my bolognese sauce with your suggestion of balsamic vinegar!

    You'll be missed...

    Hah.
I just made a big bollocknaoise there and after reading your post krankykitty I added balsamic vinegar to it. It really gives it a wee kick. Cheers!
Neuro, I too enjoyed your posts all over boards, thanks for your contributions over the years.
