Most fuel efficient Diesel Car

Hi All - What is the most fuel efficient car on the market currently? Would be looking around 2008/2009 price range? Travel approx 500 miles per week and currently running petrol which is haemorrhaging money. Need to change in coming weeks and want to make the best decision. My shortlists were as follows:

Ford Focus.
Ford Mondeo.
Toyota Corolla.
Toyota Auris.

From what I can gather from the dealers the Auris would be best with high 50 mpg. Any other recommendations or factors I should be considering?

For pure fuel efficiencies look for a car with a PSA HDI engine and then pick one to suit. Think Peugeot or Citroen. Next up would be Renaults/VAG's/BMW in no particular order

Do same miles a week mostly motorway. Had a petrol golf and changed to a Peugeot 308. I get 59-62 mpg.

Parents have a 10 focus and much prefer 308 to it.

308 is nicer inside..imho!

Focus does have nice extras like heated windscreen and seats. Bluetooth is built in, I had to get parfait thingy.

Looked at few cars - i30, golf tdi, Astra but liked the 308 the best.

Skoda Superb gets some high MPG figures low 60's i think

People will always think a small car will get better mpg, not always so as in real life conditions and the speeds that come with it they sometimes have to be ragged

You have a Mondeo but no Avensis a diesel avensis will do 55mpg.

Another lighter vw group car will get better mpg if it has the same engine.

Also the corolla and auris will likely be 5 speed being older and mpg is dependant on taking it very handy, any high speed driving will drastically affect mpg.

Kia ceed or i30 1.6 diesel def worth a shot. My mother has a 116hp i30 and itll do great mpg even when driven fast

Wouldn't even touch 55+MPG, 50.2 is the best I've ever gotten from mine and I was babying it around at 80km/h so I didn't run out of fuel. 45 is real world MPG.

The PSA 1.6 litre DV6 engine is also fitted in the ford focus and in various volvos

If you think so much of this PSA engine why not suggest that the OP goes with the Focus or Mondeo models (TDCI) which use this engine; that way you and he could both have your desires!!!

I know new Swift diesels would give you around 60 mpg or approx 4 ltrs for 100 km (or 25 kmpl).

Any golf sized VAG with a TDi should be doing greater than 50mpg. My 2002 100bhp Bora TDi does about 55mpg, mix of city/open road/country road driving. I can only imagine newer generation(Think Mk5 and 6 golf era) would be even better. On that subject, a friend of mine with a 06 105bhp Passat claims he gets over 60 mpg with a similar mix of driving to myself

My 2ltr TDI Golf averages about 55-60 MPG depending on how throttle happy i am this is a combined and if its primarily mortorway driving you can expect 70MPG unless your caning it, by contrast the other half drives a 1.3 Diesel Astra and we get about the same mileage combined but hers eats the stuff on the motorway because of the small engine....the golf is nicer though, not that im bais or anything lol

Mixed you'll get about 50MPG.

Good considering the power but hardly a miser on fuel.

A small capacity diesel (1.6 litre) in a large car like a Mondeo, Insignia etc will not give you better fuel economy on the motorway than a larger engine (2.0 litre) - in fact it will do worse, and the reason is simple - not enough power for the size and weight of the car.

A 1.6 diesel will do better than either of the above on a motorway in something like a Golf or Astra though.

I think the weight is less of an issue if a constant speed is maintained. The big diff at motorway speed is mechanical loss and drag.

My current car,08 ford focus tdci, 1.8 gets 37 mpg. mostly city driving.
I had an 05 mondeo tdi that got over 44 mpg, same driving.

I think I was doing 500miles per week I would want something at least the size of a focus, maybe bigger just for the comfort

I think a lot of people with diesel cars are quoting a figure that they achieved "once" or "twice" on this thread. I've had a VW 1.9tdi and while it was quoted as doing 55mpg in the manual, the reality of doing 800 miles a week on a mix of national primary roads, mororways and secondary roads did not achieve that figure. Have had both a 1.6 tdi Skoda Octavia Greenline and a 1.6 VW Golf in recent months through work and when you spread them over 800 miles in the week, they will just about get 55 to the gallon.

yeh too many people just looking at their trip computers which are rarely right.
i have a 94 audi 80 tdi wagon, i fill the car to the brim, drive half the tank or so out of it and refill at the same place to the brim again, divide the litres into gallons and divide the gallons into the miles done, average 50-52mpg each week.

I think all mpgs are exagerrated impossible....everyone drives different routes....urban driving combined with motorway driving on a daily basis for different commuters...although i must sat the 1.9tdi engines have done me very well i spend a mere 25 euro a week on diesel for 150 miles per week

A few diesels amongst these.

The 3 biggest factors affecting fuel economy are frontal area, drag co-efficient and weight. Weight is more of a factor for stop / start journeys, hence small cars will more be more likely to have an advantage around town. Engine efficiency is going to be quite similar across the board in non modified cars.
If car buyers weren't so concerned with appearance we could have been driving far more fuel efficient cars long ago, however manufacturers know how conservative people are so only evolve designs gradually. Look at the focus for example, it's fuel efficiency improvements over the past 3 generations have been accompanied by a more and more streamlined appearance - look at the rear especially.

08 1.8tdci mondeo brim to brim average 1200km a week 80% motorway @ 110km/h give me 49-50mpg

@120km/h = 46 mpg.

Importing from the UK isn't a huge ordeal if you want to get a particular car though. I bought my current car from the UK and collected it, it wasn't sold in Ireland originally either.
In any case the Which? article which Francie quotes above seems to indicate that the Fiesta 1.6 doesn't deliver on the manufacturers claims regarding fuel efficiency.

No car does....they get their figures running an engine on a test bed or something similar can't think of the name of it..:rolleyes:..no wind, no hills etc..

But....the 1.6 will do 62 mpg doing motorway speeds..so say peeps on the Ford fiesta club site.. I can get 55 mpg with the 1.4

The C3 is the same engine and only slightly less efficient but probably cheaper and (to some eyes) better looking. Is it available in Ireland?

The TV show 5th gear had a blue motion for a week. One of the presenters wives used it instead of her 3 series. She averaged 35mpg.

Buy a new Renault 1.5 dci. (Megane estate is a great car). 60mpg+ 5yr warranty, same price as a 2009 ford.

My auld fella has a 2012 Citroen C3 - trip computer is giving him 58.8mpg average over 7 odd thousand miles.

Edit - And I do borrow it every day to do 35 motorway miles, and I dont hold back - 120 / 130 kph. So it's not being nursed to bump up mpg rate.

I had an uncle who until recently had a Fiat Doblo van ....1.3 multi jet engine. He reckons ( I can't verify this now) that on motorway driving he was getting >80 mpg!!!!! Cheap motoring if anyway near the truth

My trip computer tells me a figure which is always a few miles more than when I do a manual check, i.e. Fill it up, drive to near empty, fill it again and check what litres are needed to fill then work it out from there

So I would take what the trip computer tells you with a grain of salt

Indeed and I do, but its gonna be roughly correct. And I couldn't be arsed figuring it or for him.
My Renault traffic van, however is doing 33-35 mpg. via maths.

not a fear of it, i had 2 and a td carina (same engine), no matter how easily i drove i couldn't top 49mpg, that was changing before 2500 revs and not going over 60mph
