With the prices for oil now at there lowest in 18 mths why are we not seeing the reduction at pumps. I know the euro is weak but not as much to be paying what we pay.

Petrol prices up north have dived lately :)
They charge more because they can!

Diesel around 1.50 and petrol 1.60 with variations a few cents either way in the Limerick/Clare area.
The days where there where price differences of up to 10 pence between neighbouring stations is long gone, there seems to be a strange correlation of fuel prices by area, it's almost like for some reason petrol retailers seem to be charging almost the same as each other...

not in the case of the topaz by the regional hospital in limerick :) Cheapest in Lim at the moment is 155.9 anyways as it goes it's due mainly to the fact that petrol was bought a few months ago at a high price and takes they reckon roughly 3 months for the price of it to start to drop, though the second it rises its seen immediately at the pumps regardless of how much it was originally bought for.

    These reasons: http://oil-price.net/en/articles/why-is-gas-price-high-when-oil-price-down.php

And worse for us because the Euro has devalued considerably against the dollar recently.

And what's more, how much extra tax has been put on petrol since 2007? Pushing 20-25 cent surely?

Around the same here RoverJames. You're from Cork aren't you? Where do you find cheapest? I always go to Lee Garage on the Model Farm Road. 1.58 petrol and 1.48 diesel. Best I've seen around.

Yep, the crowd operating out of turners cross motors are 155.9 at the mo, that's handy enough for me, few hundred yard detour once or twice a week. Say hello to Ronan in the lee g for me :pac:

Price break down of 155 Cents per litre (cpl) Unleaded
    Price before VAT 23% = 122.45cpl

    Carbon tax = 4.587cpl
    Excise Duty = 54.184cpl
    Nora levey = 2cpl

Total tax before VAT = 60.771cpl

Total cost of fuel = 61.68cpl
Total tax including VAT = 93.32

I remember when Tesco started offering petrol, it was the end of petrol stations in Limerick as we knew it!
Except it wasn't, they don't offer anything cheaper or better or different than anyone else, except the option of paying at the pump with your card, which has never once worked for me.
But that is the rule for doing business in Ireland. Never do anything better, cheaper or different than anyone else, people won't trust it, they'll think "what's the catch? why is it cheaper? there must be something wrong with it." and "never seen that, don't know what it is, better stay well away":p

They have it cheaper for a small while when they first move into an area. they are just off putting the cost against the the massive supermarket beside them. but they move up their prices after a short period but by then people are of the mindset that they are cheap and handy to get fuel there while doing their weekly shop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭Gerard93

Start using the Fuel Log App since March and usually fill in same loacation,
    25/3/12 - €1.568
    17/6/12 - €1.479

    Reduction of 9c / almost 6% !

Exactly, but for me the Topaz beside Ennis road on the way out is far handier.
They certainly made a complete dog's dinner out of the access to the Tesco, it's a completely idiotic design. I still get lost years later.

Only things I've ever heard him say, and I've been getting diesel there for three years now!

It is always very well priced for fuel in fairness though, usually a few cent cheaper than the Topaz on the straight road or the Texaco(Robbery) out by CIT

With the exception of Applegreen in Naas, all petrol stations charge the same amount for petrol and diesel. Occasionally there will be a discrepancy of a cent between a couple of the stations but that's usually only for a day or 2.

€1.58 for petrol in and around Navan. I remember when i was terrified that petrol would go over 1.19....

Its all around 160.9cents in wexford, does anyone know is there a difference between petrol in certain garages? I find between tescos and topaz petrol for the same amount at the same price topaz fuel seems to last a lot longer, is that possible or is it all in my head??
A lot of people are saying the same one of the reasons they said is dirt in the pumps, is that true??

Topaz are backed by the AA for having legit fuel.. Ie. not washed...both for petrol and diesel...

So at the moment topaz is the only way to be sure that your not putting money in the hands of criminals and damaging your engine etc..and you do get more miles to the gallon with then due to an additive, so I'm led to believe..

Their will be a symbol that will be displayed for garages with clean fuel later this summer..don't know how successful that will be as one could just put the symbol up...but I would say some new controls would be in place

Few little points in the interest of the truth as against marketing lies

1.). Topaz isn't backed by the AA as having clean fuel as some sort of customer service buzz by the AA. Topaz and the AA have joined up together to produce a AA fuel card that.... Guess what, you can only use in Topaz - ulterior motive much ?

2.) "Topaz fuel lasts longer"...... The small print of which is as against any fuel without additives put in - and seeing as NO fuel sold here by petrol stations is sold without additives it in reality means that Topaz fuel is the same as all others, or slightly better, or slightly worse.

Just, stick with any proper branded station in a state of good repair and you a pretty much going to be fine, avoid the mickey mouse, independant operations like the plague and you won't go far wrong.

And if it looks too cheap, it is.

    From what i know,

Most fuel is purchase at the port and is actually the same product just with different brand names on it.

as for having washed product in service station. Branded service stations are under contract to take fuel from that brand. and should not be "dodgy".... but as most service stations are franchised and the oil companies do not have a guy standing out side every service station in the country making sure that they are only taking fuel from them then the opportunity is available that even branded service station can have laundered fuel in order to make a quick buck. ( this includes Topaz, Emo, Texaco, Top, and other brands. )

The Revenue have introduce new procedures that service stations need to apply for new licences to sell fuel . ( a separate one for green diesel) . they also need to log in a webportal on the revenues website to input the fuel they are selling, what they are getting delivered, and the price they are selling it for. this is in an effort to cut out the ability to buy and sell cheap laundered fuel.

Aren't we (the EU) going to stop buying mad mullah oil on the 1st of July? Has that been priced into the cost of a barrel of oil already I wonder?

I think my local Maxol is around 1.55 a litre, fuel tanks on the bikes are small enough not to worry about the cost, so far anyway.

And stations often have a habit of leaving up logos from their former brand until forced to take them down if they've dropped franchise.

The owned & operated stations of the brands should always be fine, although its not always obvious which ones are and which ones are franchised.

I don't think any Esso franchised stations have Esso branded shops, ditto Topaz with Topaz but I can stand corrected on that easily. Don't know if Applegreen/Petrogas even have franchises either.

I think most stations in Ireland are franchised. for example of the 300+ Topaz stations there are about 30 that are owned by Topaz and the rest are franchised. But how do you tell which is which? I don't mean to be picking on Topaz as these are probably the one's with the highest own operated service stations. but i'm just trying to point out its still a small number over all.

Good to see it heading south, if it got under €1.50 that would help a touch. I was expecting nearer €2 by now the way things were going.
