Just a heads up folks, received a text from UPC there informing me that my speed was upgraded from 50-60meg free of charge, just did a speed test there:

Not seen another thread about this (maybe I'm blind!) but said I'd give a heads up in any case

I got the same text. Says to power cycle the modem to get the increased speed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭deravarra

Wonder if it will be the same for other speeds?

I have been told by UPC reps recently that speed increases are on the way, but wasnt told by how much. All that was said was "we'll be going beyond what anyone else can provide, and with plenty more room for further increases"

Most UPC countries in Europe have 120mbit max so maybe they are going to

    1. 120
    2. 60
    3. 30

from 25 50 and 100 today. Obviously not everywhere, still max 50 in Galway AFAIK.

I was on the 20MB plan and they sent me a message upgrading me to 25MB.

Another thing is they also changed their plans around. The 20MB plan is now discontinued. And the prices of the 25MB, 50MB and 100MB have been increased to €37, €47 and €57 respectively.

That price rise means anyone who wants to terminate UPC can do so immediately and without penalty anytime over the next month.

I'm on the 25Mb product and have heard nothing about a price rise?

I've not heard anything about a price rise on the 50meg either, but I'm sure one will probably come :rolleyes: . Still an extra 10 meg is fairly decent tbh :)

Current contracts will not be affected by the price increase.

Edit: source - a UPC "online chat" agent

My boss got a text about her 20 meg being upped to 25. I'm wondering if they'll up the price at the same time.

Got a text to say my internet has been boosted from 100mb to 120mb, did a power cycle and still can't get over 65mbps wirelessly in the same room as router.

Forget about wireless at those speeds no matter how close you are to the router.

Just power cycled my modem and can confirm my connection has been increased to 120mb from 100mb in Dublin 15.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭aN.Droid

Power cycled and now on 120mb :) Downloading at a steady 15MB/s

In Limerick by the way if you didn't guess from my name :P

I tried power cycling now that the peak period is over (where I go down to 3-4 meg), I'm now getting 25. I'm just hoping they don't increase price again but since the 25 meg pack is more expensive on their website I'm guessing they will.

Power cycled and getting 60 down 6 up

I was on the 20MB plan and they sent me a message upgrading me to 25MB.

    +1

UPC have a new offer out so I'd say there will be price changes announced shortly.

No text yet, but I'll give the auld modem a reboot when I get home, and see what happens. It has been several months since I power cycled it, so no harm to do so anyway.

Have you tried speedtest.upc.ie ? Or even downloading an ISO from HEAnet, they will give you the most valid result on LAN connection.

Remember depending on the server you choose on speedtest.net you maybe affected by various Peering Limitations, speedtest.upc.ie is hosted locally on the UPC network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

I'm in north Dublin and still on 20mb/s - only getting 17mb/s atm.

    No text either

If you are in an area where UPC don't offer 100mbits then they are unlikely to upgrade anybody. Plenty of those around.

Sorry meant to say I'm actually on the 20mb package paying €35/month total...still no upgrade. AFAIK I can get the 100mb package in this area.

    Tried speediest.upc.ie

    Got 11MB, paying for 25MB ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭bricks

I'm I missing something here, at the moment I'm on 20mbits for 25Euros + 7.5Euros per month standalone charge, so around 32.50Euros.

But looking at the current list of prices the cheapest is 37Euros + 7.50Euros. Which brings me up to 42.50Euros!

Thats a full 10Euro a month increase. Plese feel free to correct me tho.

    I tried speedtest.net yesterday.

    2017579208.png

Happy with that. 57mb up and 6.4mb down.

I'm on the 50mb package (upgraded to 60mb yesterday)

I'm on the same package (only paying by credit card instead of DD, so extra €3/month, robbers).

Yep some increase alright. IIRC I was paying close to that for their top end package a year or two ago!

Our contracts aren't affected tho so until you're finished it, you'll still be paying the same.

Connect your laptop to modem with Lan cable and check again, it should show what you are actually getting.

Was showing 24MB down and 2.5MB up yesterday from the same system / website. Might be just a case they're working on it now?

By any chance did you check yesterday during off peak hours?

    You'll be paying €44.50 .

    Up from €32.50,

an increase of €12euro or 38%.

When are they going to inform us of a price increase?

Not really a free upgrade so much as a message from UPC, "Since we now have a monopoly on real broadband we'll be uping your price" , still there's no competition, most people if they switched over to DSL would be lucky to get even 8Mbits.

My download seems the same, but upload has increased from 2.5 to 3.2 after power cycle

UPC seem to have made Smart Telecom competitive again.

People who are currently with UPC and already have Broadband from them won't be effected by the price increases. It will only be for new customers signing up.

I originally thought only 20MB users would get a free upgrade because they discontinued the 20MB plan. But it seems like they just decided to give everyone a free upgrade. Paying €1 per MB/s... i'm pretty happy with that. Before UPC was in my area I was paying Meteor €25 for 7.2MB/s (which I only achieved half of that speed max) with a 20GB usage limit. I'm actually getting over the advertised speeds from UPC. Still think they are the best BB provider. However for new customers it will probably make them think twice.

on wireless at peaktime....quite happy here.

i got the text today 30meg to 60meg, i reboted the modem and im only getting 35meg down/5.5meg up (wired connection). Im thinking some of the modems out there might not actually be able to work at the upgrade speeds, im on the Cisco EPC2203 modem and Ive read that it can only handle upto 30meg speeds. Anyone know anything about this?

AFAIK the 50 Mbs routers (like I have) will handle up to 120 Mbs. You need a wireless n router or a wireless n card with a laptop. I stand to be corrected on this.

PS.I got the upgrade but no text or email.
