CUBE sizing chart

    Hi Folks,

I'm looking for opinions in relation to a new bike I'm getting shortly. I am going with a Cube Peloton Pro however I have a couple of concerns to do with frame size.

I am 5' 9” with an inner leg measurement of 31 inches. Looking at general road bike sizing charts I should be a 54 frame, however I understand the Cube's are slightly different. Having checked the Cube specific sizing chart I am a 56 for this bike, which is fine. I went to the shop and got fitted and they said a 58 would suit me. Now I don't like questioning people who have the expertise in this area but a few cyclists I know gave me a funny look when I said a 58.

The thing concerning me is that the shop only have a 58 in stock and I am wondering if maybe this has any baring on their recommendation? Am I being unduly concerned and will this have an impact down the line? I am relatively new to this so any feedback is much appreciated.

Begorrah, it would be an extra extra small you'd be needin'. ;)

I have no idea about Cube sizing but a 58" frame for someone who is 5'9" sounds wrong. Test ride it and don't be fooled by the illusion of comfort that a low saddle relative to the bars may bring. This won't work for you in the longer term. Whatever you do, don't compromise on fit. If you have to wait for a 54" or a 56", wait.

You sound very similar in height and proportions to me, I normally ride a 54cm but a 56cm wouldn't be a stretch.

58cm definitely sounds too big and the cynical side of me says they are just trying to flog the size they have left for the sake of a sale. Don't do it!

Seemingly, Cube bikes are made quite small and a 58 Cube is equivalent to a 55 from the other main brands, according to the shop. A quick search on the interweb confirms that Cubes are indeed made smaller, however the Cube website says a 56. I understand that these are only guide tables, but this shop is quite large and reputable according to friends who go there for MTB stuff. I don't want to dismiss the advice necessarily but a double check on boards is always worth it..

Smells like sales pitch to me! It's common enough for shops to peddle existing stock; Shoe shops will tell you the shoes will shrink/stretch if they don't have the right size for you! Strong word of advice: If it doesn't feel right, walk away. Cubes are about a size smaller, but not two sizes smaller, and that 58 sounds far too big for you.

I'm 1.86ish cm and a 60cm Cube sometimes feels too long for me (Bear in mind that the Cube website suggested a 58/60 and standard sizing suggestions are 56/58, which I'd agree with).)

I'm 1.85cm and my Cube is 60" and it's a good fit for me. I had originally been looking at 56' frames and was also taken aback when they suggested the bigger size but I gave it a good test spin before deciding it was right for me.

There is no way that a 58 is the right size for you at 5'9"! Frankly I would take my custom elsewhere! Personally I would always prefer a bike that is slightly too small than one that is too big!

A 60' frame is pretty big!

Op, I had a similar experience with CSS here in Dublin when I was buying a few months ago. I'm 5' 10" and they suggested a 58 in the Cube Attempt. I was a bit sceptical but to be fair to them they had both 56 & 58 in stock and I tried both and the 58 was fine. I went with another bike in the end but Cube sizing is a bit quirky. There was a 58 there in another make (maybe Ridley ?) and I could barely reach the bars, totally different size altogether.

Maybe try another Cube stockist for comparson before you commit to anything....

A smaller size will generally give you a more 'aggressive' position. I would be worried that a 58" would have a big headtube (the bit between the forks and the bars) and you would be limited to sitting low relative to the bars to achieve a proper saddle height. You don't want to end up like the strange gentleman on the right, do you? ;)

I think the best thing to do is to get a second opinion. The shop I initially went to however is the 'approved' supplier for our bike to work scheme and it would be too much hassle to stray from this for the HR dept. I'll wait before doing anything further but based on the replies so far, it would irk me giving over a grand (gross) to this place if they were trying to flog stock for the sake of it

I have a Cube size 58 frame and I'm 6 ft 1 so I'd say that 58 will be too big for you at 5 ft 9.
Like others have said, shop around and get a bike that fits

Unfortunately, I am stuck with this place as they are the approved supplier for the 'bike to work' scheme. I spoke with a few lads in my office who use this place regularly and they find the service and shop to be top notch. Whilst they found the sizing strange, they said not to dismiss it out of hand, and to get an alternative sizing done somewhere.

Having searched the internet for hours yesterday for actual CUBE owners, and comparing their measurements to their respective frame sizes, there was a varying mix. It was mentioned on numerous occassions that the 2012 peloton was very small, and there were lots of people around 5ft 10inches with a 58 frame. It also has to be said that there were a few 5' 11" aswell on 58, with 6ft going to size 60.

    5"10 and have a cube 60cm bike

The guys in edge sports shop told me to get up on it and told me that seem right

I don't have any pains or anything the bike is going good

But next time I'll be going for a 56cm or smaller for racing

    FYI...

    I have a cube 54 and am 5 ft 8

I'm 5'9(and a little bit)" with a 32" leg and ride a Cube GTC 56. It is very neat with a small head-tube and allows for a nice agressive position. I'd say you be very stretched out on the 58 and it would probably handle like a farm gate.

BTW: Cube sizing is a little odd in that most of their 56s have apx a 545mm top tube.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

As a couple of others have said. Cubes are sized funny. A 58 in a Cube is not a traditional 58. It is a traditional 56 with a tall front. The effective top tube of the 58 is 56cm and the headtube is 17.5cm.

    http://www.cube.eu/en/road/performance/peloton-pro/

A 58 would be probably slightly to big for you at 5'9. as you have concluded yourself a 56 seems like the right size, which is equivalent to a traditional 54 with a tall headtube.

Don't let them pressure you into buying without letting you on a 56.

I am 5' 8" and I bought a cube streamer from CSS in size 53cm. it fits me lovely. my inside leg is 30cm. the streamer is similar to the peleton. go get another opinion from another stockist on your size. I have heard that cube bikes are hard to get as they have sold out in some sizes and cube are not making any more this year. I read that on this forum.

    Edit:

I also have an old steel frame basso which is 54cm and i am very comfortable on it. So i think that 58 is way too big for you.

5 11" and have a 60cm Cube Aerial. Only prob I had was slight lower back discomfort on longer spins but the shop inverted the stem and it transformed the bike for me.

Could ride it all day now without issue or complaint.

Thanks for the replies. I went to another stockist today and he felt I would be a 56 based on my build (turns out I am actually 5'10" with 31 inch inner leg). The shop was sold out of Cubes however, but he said a 58 would be too big anyway.

I am in two minds now as to what to do as I am tied into buying from the first bike shop. The general advice is that a 58 is too big, however the CUBE website, based on my exact height, recommends 55-58 frame.....I like the look of the Cube but it's pobably best to pick an alternative bike at this stage.

I'm a smidge over 5'10" amd ride a 56cm Cube Streamer and it fits great, in my opinion a 58 would be too big, don't go near it!

I am 5' 9” with an inner leg measurement of 31 inches.

my measurements are pretty much identical. got a cube aerial 56cm on the btw scheme and have had it over a year now. very comfortable. got it from cycle bike in mary's abbey. they only had 54 in stock at the time but recomended the 56 so had to wait a while for them to get one in.

A point not about the Cube specifically but some guidance if you are stuck between frame sizes.

I am 5'9"-ish and when I was buying my bike (Trek 1.5), according to the shop I was between sizes for the 54cm and the 56cm. The shop said I could really go for either but that all things being equal I should go for the smaller. I tried out both sizes and they both felt comfortable, but the 54 frame just felt better, and being smaller was a bit more maneuverable. I bought the 54, and have been very happy with that choice. If the Cube sizing is effectively 2cm smaller than stated, then that would suggest that either 56 or 58 would be good for you, but you really have to try it out to be sure.

I think the main points to focus on are how the bike feels and especially how the reach to the bars works for you. There's more flexibility with the other dimensions as you can adjust the saddle for height and position of your knees over the bottom bracket. Adjusting the reach to the handlebars involves changing the stem.

So my suggestion is to try both sizes - on the road for a couple of km, not just around the shop or on a turbo - and see which you prefer!

I have a GTC Pro 2010 53cm .I'm 5 9ish 31" inside leg and got fitted professionally by Jerry O Dwyer in Cork. My bike is very comfortable.

I have a 58 Cube, I'm exactly 5" 11 with a 32" inside leg, I'm almost always a 56 with other manufacturers. My 5' 8" mate has a 56 Cube which is good for him. I would go with the 56 Cube, from what I can see it on the dimensions of the frame a 58 Cube is really a 56.

Others forums have also tackled the Cube sizing question........

btw I am 5'10" and have a 56cm Cube Peloton Race and find it just right.

I can guess which shop you are on about.. based out Tallaght direction...

I went in thinking i was a 52cm-54cm as I am a 5' 8" lady... After getting measured I was told 55cm it my ideal height for a bike...

I can't get any ladies frames in my size so the only bikes they offered that suited me were the Lapeirre Audacio and the Cube Peloton. He said that I am a 58cm in the Cube Peloton - took out a measuring tape and measured that it is actually 55cm but that Cube measure from different points on the bike to standard manufacturers.

I'm calling in this evening to see if the 58cm bike will fit but it sounds VERY big to me so I'm not too hopeful. Looks like I'll be doing the ROK on my hybrid after all...

Im 5'10" and I opted for a 56 Cube after tying both the 56 and the 58, id try both if you can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭doozer16

I had similar problems when getting sized for a Cube, I have pretty much the same measurements as you (5,9" 30 leg). The shop I tried sized me on a 54 and it was too small, 58 was too big and even the 56 didn't fit right but the option they came up with was to go with a 56 and put a longer stem on the bars to stretch the bike out a bit for me.
DO NOT SETTLE for what they have in store, Get a fit somewhere else, you might have to pay for a fit but if you do enough waffling in store about being ready to buy right now etc, they will prob fit you there and then for free. Then go back to your BTW scheme shop and tell them to order exactly what you want.
    Best of luck

Go in at an off peak time when they have time to spend with you and not cut corners. I spent 2 hours trying 3 different bikes and then different stems.

Also if you are going for the Peloton pro, would you not consider going for the entry level Cube carbon bike, great spec for the price and only a couple hundred extra as far as i know :-)

Agree GTC, thats what I went for, there getting hard to come by though €1,399, hopefully have it next week.

My advice would be not to buy a 58 cube even if you think it fits in the shop. I have a 58 and I'm on the edge at 5' 11" in fact I just put a 90mm stem on instead of the 110mm the bike came with.

I went back to the Shop yesterday to try the 58.. definitely too big.. too much on the reach - my elbows weren't bent. Tried a 56 in the carbon and that was definitely a better fit.

Turns out they're sold out of 56 in the Peloton Triple until possibly next September when the 2013 model comes out. They were probably trying to flog the stock of 58's that they have

Try a few other cube dealers or go for the compact.
