    Hi all,

just a quick note, to say that if anyone is shopping around for school books.

    www.schoolbooksdirect.ie have 10% off
www.easonschoolshop.com have 5% off and if you register for their newsletter you get another 5% off.

    BUT the best so is
www.joycegalway.com their books are cheaper, they are offering free delivery and either free book covering, or 10% off. their service and staff are brilliant, books ordered on friday night arrived on tues morning at 8:30am!

I bought my books with Joyces and got the free book covering as I had 13 text books to cover!

I have not had to buy a text book since my boys moved to the school they are in now. It is the work books that cost a fortune each year:mad: I have only one lot of work books to buy this year though as the other two will be in secondary and thankfully they run an excellent book rental scheme.

you should see the amount of freebies the book reps gives us when they call, you know theres serious money in them.
Though look at the price of exam papers plumet when educate.ie joined the market few years back

got an email from schoolbooks.ie saying they are giving free delivery, anyone have the code? It's not in the mail.

Also any supervalue club card holder gets an extra 10% (if you fancy sharing that code :) )

you don't need a code for the free delivery, just order before a certain day and the charge is zero in the checkout
also it is not a specific code for super valu customers, it is the code off your fob, which you use when shopping and you enter that when you are in the checkout page as well

Super Valu are offering reward using 50 of your reward points to get a voucher for 10% off and free delivery (which is the very same offer on schoolbooks.ie and it does not cost any reward points) but which will run longer than the current promotion on the schoolbooks.ie website

    +1 for Joyces in Galway.

Found them very competitive, he will do his best to source additional books he may not normally stock, the joy of havin it all delivered in one go to my door is fantastic.

Also customer service is 2nd to none (I had a last minute change of school & he took back all the books & replaced them at no extra cost, other than delivery)

    He'll get my business

    Eh?
You sound like you are either a rep or a teacher so can you explain a little please.

Who do the reps give these freebies to?

Can I get some of these freebies for my kids?

And "... the price of exam papers plumet ..." - what does that mean?
Exam papers are available free online so why have they not plummeted to zero - why do I still have to buy them at all?

Schools, teachers and the Dept of Ed need to read the memo from Michael Noonan - the one that says: "There's a recession on you know...", the one that we parents have been reading daily for the last 5 years.

    Grr:mad:, Grrr:mad: and double Grrr:mad:

I got my schoolbooks from OMahonys last summer... www.omahonys.ie
At the moment they are doing 6% off on their website. They cover as well, which is handy, hate having to do it. I use them for just buying my one off regular books too, and they dont charge delivery so win win! Would have no trouble recommending them, I'll be heading back to them again this Summer.

I totally agree and it's grrr for my 17 year old going into 6th year grrr for my 16 year old going into 6th year and double grrr for my twins going into 6th class. It's impossible to cover all the costs of sending the kids to school. Department of Education should realise just how hard it is

Yes I am a teacher and the point about freebies is that the reps do a very hard sell to get us to pick their books, I could have numerous copies of stuff on the shelf, the point being is that there must be a big profit margin on them. I am all for Book schemes to keep the price down, money is tight
Exam papers: They used to be 5-7 euro a book before, now they could be 2-4 euro. Of course they are free online and by all means print them off but a) costs more to print them off b) child looses sheets c) child can't find the same place as others. Particularly with weaker kids, saying 2007 paper 2 could take 5 minsutes whereas pg23 is straightforward.
We do read the memo about the recession, we are also in the recession and please don't be patronising about it, not all schools are out to cost parents a fortune.

It would help if the Dept. of Revenue didn't charge 23% on exam papers and also testing materials (they are considered 'tools' under tax criteria). However, school books are Vat free. This is why testing and exam materials are so much more expensive than they should be.
Michael Noonan should do something about that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,582 ✭✭✭stickybean

Eason's books arrived already - you really can't fault that - less than a 2 day turn around for free delivery and 10% of (5% and then an extra 5% when you sign up to their news letter).

Also they had the clear covers for 69c each, i'm happy, my daughter not so much :D

I've been ringing around and while it can be easier to get from one store I got 15% off my kids Jolly Phonics workbooks from Demac in Longford town. I rang them and got this offer, very pleasant to deal with.

Easons and Joyces both offered 10% discount and free delivery.

Checked both prices and Joyces were cheaper for the books in the first place before discounts so the Joyces bill ended up 12% cheaper than Easons !

The order was submitted to Joyces at 2pm and delivered by courier 19 hours later !

Easons are a bit like Boots, you think that they are going to be cheaper but they are not in all instances.;)

I found Joyces in Galway cheaper too but only by a few euro, opted for free covering rather than discount

schoolbooks.ie free covers worth .99c per book code :CV25...
saved myself €16 and this works out better value than the 10%off or the free delivery, which ended 24th anyway

Got the 1st year secondary school list yesterday, good god, what an amount of books to buy.

Any more updates on whats the cheapest website to use including free book covering ?

Pay day tomorrow for me, so might as well bite the bullet and get the book list bought asap

    Thanks for any pointers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭T-Maxx

Is the -5% at Easons already included in the price? I registered for the newsletter and got the code but it only shows -5% at the checkout stage instead of -10%.

Ordered my school books from Joyces in Galway on Tuesday afternoon and they arrived in Dublin this morning. Free covering and free delivery. Very impressed. Easons were charging 50c per book to cover them.

Most primary schools have book sales yesterday and today, where classes sell off their school books to the next class below them.

So a list of books for 3rd class that would be 95 euro new, only costs the parent/parents 40 euro.

Great idea and way to keep reusing the school books too.

Hi all, never used them before, but ordered from Joyce's late Tuesday and arrived yesterday morning, free covering, free delivery. Ordered from another source for some other books, but no sign of them yet. THANKS JOYCE'S

I have to pass this one. I ordered my sons second class books on Tuesday from school books.ie and paid with laser. On enquiry on the tracking system it said that some books were out of stock 3 - 4 days waiting time. On ringing to enquire it seems that I will be waiting 2 - 3 weeks for my order. I am really cross as I feel they should have not accepted the order for books that were not in stock. I remembered after that this happened to me last year and it was a disaster. I didn't make them wait for the money for the books so they should have stated on their website that the books were not in stock and their would be a wait of this amount of time. Anyway on perusing Easons last night, most of the same books were cheaper and a quicker delivery time etc. I would definitely not recommend dealing with them, and also because there is no access to their terms and conditions on their website also. Definitely feel my statutory rights have been affected. Will not be using them ever again.

I priced the books on the 3 websites listed in the OP. Joyces were the cheapest by 4 or 5 euro. Just about to pull the trigger but decided to check local, Salmons in Ballinasloe. Got all for the almost the same as Joyces and all in stock. Happy out.

Eason 5% discount code is 5SCHPRMCE. Might be useful for someone.

That code will be a once-off. Just register for the newsletter - you can always unregister yourself later.

I used to buy from schoolbooks.ie in the past but found the s&h to dear this time round so I settled on Easons with the -5% and free postage.

Same story here with schoolbooks.ie. Ordered June 22nd also. I emailed them and it took a few days to reply. Eventually I received an email saying they were waiting for the publishers. In the meantime I had rang them and was told they were waiting for a hand-writing copy!! They will be hearing from me again tomorrow.

Thanks Pav for your info about joyces in galway. Ordered sons first year books on Monday and arrived today. Very quick service and best of offers around with 10% off and free delivery. Thanks again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 193 ✭✭therealgirl

Just ordered from Joyces, used the free book covering discount instead of the 10% off...delivery is only 3.50 compared to 6.50 on Schoolbooks.ie....also when I tried to order from Schoolbooks.ie earlier last week the discount code wouldn't go through so I emailed them & have yet to recieve a reply....so Joyces got my money :)

How does anyone get Schoolbooks.ie to answer the phone??

School books ordered July 3rd, promised delivery within 2 weeks! No sign... €354 debited within a couple of days of order being placed and still no books. No answer to e-mail, noone answering the phone all week....

Anyone know if they're still in business and if I'm covered by Visa to get my money back? It was a push to pay it the first time, never mind a second time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,206 ✭✭✭jordata

Frowsy, I got them on the phone last Friday. Similar situation to yours. I had been told they were waiting for stock but on Friday they said everything was in stock and they were working through the orders. Person I spoke to would do her best to have it dispatched on Monday. Later that evening I got another call from a differnt person. This was in reply to an email I had sent to orders.ie earlier in the week. This time I was told she would get the order out as soon as possible and ring me back to confirm on Monday or Tuesday. This is Thursday and there has been no call. I am going to ring them later and ask for a full refund.

    Totally different experience with schoolbooks.ie
when it was originally posted at the end of june by someone that they had not received their order, I too checked on my status and all books were in stock, just awaiting picking in the warehouse as they had been ordered for a while
Sent an email that i was very irate as they had my money and all books were in stock, and T&Cs were 4-5 days delivery, stood my ground and received my books the very next morning, and got free book covering on top of the 10% off and free shipping
    I found them very helpful!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,644 ✭✭✭SerialComplaint

Why do school books need to be covered? Why don't they print them with a decent firm laminated cover in the first place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 516 ✭✭✭Frowzy

@ hairyfairy, that was my experience for the last couple of years too....

Anyway, I figured out how to get through, instead of choosing option 1 to query an existing order select 2 to place a new order :)

Got sorted (I think) he's to get back to me today to see if I can get shipped today. Def going to try Easons next year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,206 ✭✭✭jordata

Despite many phone calls, emails and promises schoolbooks.ie did not deliver so I finally cancelled the order yesterday. Just re-ordered the lot with Easons. I didn't have a discount code so I rang and asked for one. Very helpful guy told me they currently they have a promotion with pigsback.com so use code PIGSBACK for 10% off - and delivery is free. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,207 ✭✭✭Rashers72

I think schoolbooks.ie simply underestimated the volumes of orders they would receive, and I assume the Supervalue offer sent a lot of business their way.It must be a tough one, as they probably do 95% of their business in 2-3 weeks, and they are clearly under immense pressure. The additional problem is when they run 2 weeks late, due to customer holidays, most people need to give an additional delivery address, all requiring manual updating/ intervention.:(
I think most people will use Eason's next year. We used both parties for orders this year, and Easons were very efficient. I even bought a wrong book (my error). Just brought it back into store, and recredited. No issue.

Limestone1 I agree that schoolbooks.ie are probably overwhelmed due to supervalu promotion. I have ordered no problem in previous years but the lack of response, and honesty, from them is not acceptable. I might have been willing to wait a little longer if they had put their hands up and said they were inundated and were doing their best to clear back log. What I got was one excuse after another.

Thumbs up here for Easons though. I ordered online but rang with a query and person who answered the phone didn't know the repy but went and found out. Very good customer service!
