I heard about this rescue yesterday and wanted to post here as a reminder to guys to wear their bloody deadman cords. This guy was taking the shortcut behind Spike Island on his own in a Rib - somehow he took a hopper and fell overboard. The Rib then began circling this guy in ever decreasing circles, obviously the helm went all the way over and kept going around and around.

A local just happened to be looking through a telescope and spotted the man in trouble - called 999 and the resue was on. Unfortunatly the guy sustained some pretty serious injuries, not my place to describe them here.

This could have been avoided - please wear your deadmans, they are there for this exact reason. I drove commercial Ribs for years and wearing deadmans came as naturally as wearing a seatbelt in my car.

Just looking and there is another example here: http://www.baltimorelifeboat.ie/two-men-safe-and-out-of-control-rib-secured/
