    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3454383

I am going to look at the above car tomorrow, but alarm bells are ringing before I even see it. Its probably 10 grand too cheap, the wheels are the wrong type and the seller has been anything but forthcoming. I arranged to see the car on Monday, he then cancelled, then Thursday, he cancelled on Wednesday. Then I get a phone call from the seller today explaining that he was too busy to show me the car and if I was still interested he could show me the car tomorrow. He wants a deal done by Monday, though is willing to give me the car to take to a garage of my choice to have it checked out.

The photo in the ad gives the impression that the car is at a dealers, but the ad is terrible, no real info given and googling the phone number gives nothing. Everything is telling me to walk, no run, but I would hate to miss out if it did turn out to be legit. Any thoughts???

Firstly, you've just shown a potential bargain to a load of car heads who may well beat you to it:D Secondly, Porsche owners tend to be fairly self-involved anyway, hence the run-around:) Looks nice though..

Might want to do a finance check on it. Could be where the missing ten grand is.

Seems legit especially if he is letting you bring it to a garage

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

Giving you the run around doesn't mean the car is dodgy but I'd still be very weary. The majority of reasons that a car like that would be so cheap are far from good.

    I'd double check the year - that's a 986 model which finished in 2004.

    Possibly a typo.

Get reg first to do a motorcheck 35 euro check on it before you go to see it.

Also it could be on UK plates as no reg is shown

Its hard to tell what it is from the photo, they are certainly 986 wheels but I cant tell anything more at the minute.

Is the garage in question on the Clonskeagh road ?? If so I'm pretty sure I seen it this evening when driving past there.. Like the others pretty sure its not a 2008 reg

The seller has been very vague about the cars location, he is meeting me at the airport tomorrow. While that is handy as I am driving down from Carlingford, I would prefer to see the car at either a garage or the owners house. I'll know more when I see it, but I was hoping someone had already seen it and could give some info.

Although the ad is new, it has been renewed quite a few times. I first saw it a couple of weeks ago, but was on holiday.

No, that's not the same car

    I'm 99% sure the car in the picture is a 986 and not a 987. Highly unlikely that there's a 2008 986 around.

My thoughts exactly, much wider and shorter side air intake on the 986

I see lots of cars for sale by a dealer with picture taken at that location. Its defo a dealer photo. It could be south dublin fiat but cant be sure.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,616 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

That's definitely a pic at what used to be south Dublin fiat on the clonskeagh road. In exactly the spot they take pics of all of their cars.

If it was the same dealer then surley googling the phone number would give something?

Thanks for all the replies by the way.

I figure its a genuine dealer photo this advertiser has screen grabbed and put with his own ad.. Where the scam goes from there is anyones guess.

Ah I thought you meant another dealer in your last post!

South Dublin Fiat is actually on Goatstown road! Is it not shut down though?

I'd go look. Worst case, It's a scam. So what, laugh and walk away. Best case, it's a bargain. Do your homework and keep your eyes open, we live in funny times and people sell things for funny reasons. He's hardly going to make you buy it so what harm in having a look? Could be interesting.:) Anyway, no scammer on earth would give you the car to get it checked at a garage - worst case scenario you get a free spin in a nice motor.

anyone selling a porsche should be proud to put up photos with great attention to detail and answer all calls with integrity and honesty.

    doesn't seem the case here.

.... the worst case scenario would be the chap gets the sh1t kicked out of him to facilitate the theft of the few quid the "seller" of the advertised car thinks he may be carrying, be it a few hundred for a deposit etc etc.

Unlikely admittedly but getting a spin in a nice motor isn't the worst case scenario by any stretch of the imagination.

Double watermark on image, looks like it's been lifted from previous ad and cropped.

Nah, it's a buyers market at the moment and "getting the sh1t kicked" is for the daily mail readers. I go look at some seriously dodgy adds, cos you never know....if it's a real scam, I laugh and walk away. Somtimes the best deals lok like turds on first inspection. Maybe this is a bag of sh1te, but you kiss a lot of frogs, etc etc.. whats the worst thing that could happen!, looll. I went to look a donedeal ad on a Travvelers halting site once, fully expecting to get bent over if they could, and I walked away with one of the best bargains I've ever got - moved it on the next day for double. I still sweated a dribble down the small of my back, but it turned out to be worth it.

Ah now, you cannot argue that there is any possibility that this is genuine.
*A screen grabbed picture from a dealer forecourt although that dealer is not the seller.
*A stupid price if it was an 08 car
*The model shown did not run to 08.
*lack of info as to where the car is located
    *Sketchy about viewing time
    *Meeting at the airport

If you feel the need to check this one out, I fear for you in the buying and selling game.

I dont know how this is a scam but it seems dodgy, have a look at driving.ie as mentioned by a few people you can see the 04 model with the small air intake and the 05 model has the longer air intake (not a chance in hell would i have noticed that:)!)
normally the scam is the e-mail bit im wondering where the seller is going with this:confused:

Have you informed your next of kin? It all sounds dodgy!

Stick a hivis jacket on the back window of your car, some copper face jacks leaflets on the floor of your car and mention how you must check the reg in pulse tomorrow when you are back in the station tonight...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Barnavave

It seems the seller has seen this thread and is not a happy bunny. Thanks to everyone who replied, some great detective work finding the actual car that was for sale, or should I say the ad from which the photo was stolen from. Mods can lock this one up if they wish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,944 ✭✭✭pete4130

so whats the outcome? is he unhappy because his ad was misleading, false, or unhappy his ad was genuine and questioned?

Maybe he'd be less unhappy if he had a better ad/photo and was more forthcoming. He reaps what he sows in all fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Have you actually asked the seller the year OP?Could be just a simple typo,no?

I would have thought the same but looking at the advert it is mentioned in 3 different places that it is 2008 -the advert header, the advert righthand side colume and then again in the advert description.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Barnavave

He now claims that he was using the photo from another ad as he does not have a digital camera. I am getting a lot of abusive texts, but I am giving as good as I am geting. Seller also claims to be a Guard, that was after I told him I had reported the ad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,065 ✭✭✭Pique

    You upset him OP.

I'm sure he was legit and needed the money and you missed out on a great bargain.

    Oh wait....

In all fairness, who doesn't have or know someone who has a digital camera or a phone with a camera these days?? Even my 91 year old grandmother has a phone with a camera!!
