Its a boxers favourite so that must count for something-I did it (tried to) back in the day when getting into shape and found it great

i think boxers do it to keep them good on their feet and light footed for "dancing." bound to help in some way tho

Boxers do it to improve thier footwork and speed. There are cardio benefits as well.

I'm sure there are probably youtube videos of cardio skipping exercises. You could try out some of that for a bit of variation and to use other muscle groups.

Skipping is one of the best calorie burning exercises you can do.

Skipping is a great exercise and will burn 3x calories compared to jogging. HOWEVER, you are unlikely to be able to do any signifiant amount of skipping so its probably not the best choice.
Most peoples forearms and calves will get too sore and burn after only a few minutes. Obviously you can build it up over time.

alternate 1 min skipping with 1 minute abs with 30 second rest as a decent start.

On the other hand, if you are v.good at skipping, the calorie expenditure drops a lot as you get very efficient.

Not true. Jumping up and down on the same spot does not burn 3 times more calories than jogging. Its just most people are really bad at skipping and get tired after a few jumps, this does not mean they are burning a huge amount of calories.

Not much but it's a start. Probably about 30 calories or half a biscuit.

Skipping is a great exercise. Not just for the body but for the mind as well, it's a great and fun distraction from your daily routine. Definitely check out different skipping workouts as there are plenty online. A lot can be frustrating to do but once you get into the swing (no pun intended and if it was, it's a terrible one) of things you'll enjoy it as you go along.

Look at other exercises to include in your workout also like squats and push ups. I found from skipping that it's something to accommodate into other workouts and works well.

I used to do a lot of it when I was younger and saw the benefits over time. It's a great way to get a sweat on also, if you sweat a lot then compensate with a lot of hydration.

It builds strength and if you want to build more then check out some low level plyometric exercises. They're great and beneficial but don't burn yourself out.
