The price in the subject is wrong, that included some other items I bought as well.
Amazon's conversion rate isn't that bad!
Can the subject be changed please?

Sweet Jesus, this is easily the best bargain alert I've seen on here.
    Cracking value, Cheers op.

Pretty sure these are the ones with the high failure rate

Not these drives? They have an excellent reputation...

These are the best all around SSDs (except for price usually) in my opinion. 80,000IOPS is one of the big things about these!

some of the most reliable too, shame I'm only on the market for a 128gb ssd at the moment, though.

The 830's are one of the best SSD's out right now and top most benchmarks at the moments. Tremendous value to be got here.

frozenfrozen, the 128GB is on dabs.ie for €101 at the moment!

I'd love an SSD, but after looking into how I could install it into my inspiron, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle :(

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong ones then..

Might pick up one of these for the laptop so

does anyone know how power sruges affect ssd s ?as i had one from OCZ and it failed on me in two weeks time, reviews were mixed and many did complain, but i dont want to risk again as it takes loads of time transferring data between the hards it it fails,as in my house constantly if someone uses iron or kettle and other devices at the same time like fans over the oven when switched on,id get this annoying click through my speakers like interference, which is bassically shortage of supply, and i do know that ssd s are very sensitive in that term.As now one side of me is like buy it coz when i had ocz it was like pc on speed everything worked instantly compared to hdds, plus 0 sound like in the church:) any review will be helpful.

Your thinking of the Sandforce drives - for example OCZ's Vertex 3 + Agility 3 and Corsair's Force 3 + Force GT.

These are far better drives and don't have inflated speed scores like the others.

Great deal, but do I really need one?

All computer components are sensitive to surges. You should invest in a good* power supply unit and a surge protection strip.
You could go all out by spending a couple of 100 euro on a UPS as well, but that's probably not necessary.

*Be careful when buying PSUs. A lot of seemingly good ones aren't that good. Head over to the building & upgrading forum and I can help you out or PM me.

It's actually more than €30 cheaper than what you posted on the title, once you select the free delivery:
    Order Summary
    Amazon Currency Converter is Enabled.

    (Learn More)
    Items: GBP 143.49
    Postage & Packing: GBP 0.00
    Order Total: GBP 143.49

    (Payment Total: EUR 185,60**)

And yes, this is the most reliable SSD right now. Used by the major OEMs (Apple, Dell, etc.) and with near zero failure rate.

essentially yes. in the same way that a Bugatti Veyron is just a car. :D

it's a solid state version of a hard drive, kind of like a usb flash drive, but much much faster.

it's not that big of a deal to swap out a HDD on a laptop, all you need is a small phillips screwdriver and a tiny bit of patience. :)

i'm actually planning on adding my original HDD as a secondary drive into my laptop in the dvd drive bay with a hdd caddy for extra storage.

I don't get it... Why are people saying that £143.49 is better that £139.99, which is what it's selling at now and is what the OP put in his/her original post?
    Seems more expensive to me.

EDIT: I just put through an order there and it jumped to £143.49... How bizarre... Where did the extra £4 come from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,583 ✭✭✭marcbrophy

Both links are the exact same!

The £4 difference is the Irish VAT rate. The UK VAT rate is shown before you get to the checkout!

    VAT rate differences.

    Damn Ireland.

I asked them about it and they didn't mention it. The guys just said "I am confident it will go through at the lower price and if not, I should contact them for a refund."

    Them? The guys?

You can probably still cancel your order if you ordered around 09:26.

    Them = Amazon
The guys = the support staff that I got through the chat application.

I know I can still cancel my order, but I am hardly going to for £3.50 difference. It's still a fantastic offer.

Damnit, why is pay day 2 weeks away and me with a wedding to go to this weekend? :( If the 256 is still that price after pay day, I may have to take the SSD plunge. Still gonna have to be swapping games in and out on my Steam install, but for warp speed load times, I'm not too stressed :)

It looks like an awful mess on the inspirons though! You have remove the optical drive and the bloody keyboard and palm rest accourding to the dell website!

Is there some part that you can buy that you can put an ssd or hdd into the optical drive bay and still have a flush outer edge?

yes, i've already got one for whenever i finally upgrade the old hdd in my laptop.

    208923.jpg

the (potential) problems there though are that you may not be able to boot from it if it's in the optical bay (might depend on the model of laptop) and if you ever need to use a dvd drive, you'll need to fork out for an external one as your optical bay will be full already.

if you follow the online guides you should be fine, it's really not as difficult as it looks on the majority of laptops, although i really don't know why they don't all still position them somewhere with a removable cover for easy accessibility like the good old days.

    doubtful.

i'm pretty sure that the macbook airs would have a caseless slimline SSD to keep size to the bare minimum.

That's a cool casing right there, I never thought of re-using that basically unsued space. In the near 18 months that I've had this laptop, I've only used the optical drive a handful of times!

Assuming you set up the bios correctly, there should be no problem with it being bootable. On the plus side for me, I already have an external dvd burner over usb, but for yourself, could you not get an external housing for the one that you'll remove from your laptop that connects sata to usb?

Yeah, I reckon that it'd be easy enough once I started doing it alright! I think I'm just looking for an excuse not to spend more money on gadgets!! :D

i picked mine up off ebay for a couple of quid. took a little while to arrive, but i've been planning this upgrade for a while so it made sense to get it ahead of time.

if you want to pay a few extra quid, i'm sure you'll find a UK or EU based supplier for faster delivery.

Looks like standard 2.5'' hard drive size, so yes it should work. There's youtube videos of people replacing the hard drives in these.

From a quick search it looks like they mostly come with standard size harddrives/SSDs but you should probably double check with your specific model number.

doesnt matter you still wont get the speeds shown on box make it sata2-3

    I had
OCZ AGT3-25SAT3-120G Agility 3 120GB SATA III 2.5 inch SSD and got about 270-300 on empty drive,so those speeds displayed are only possible with right software which uses memory clusters to their full potential and in sequence to achieve speeds of 500-550.the only way two achieve advertised speed is to use raid mode with couple ssd the more the better :) if im not mistakin even to achieve 3gb/s you would need at least 6ssd drives working in raid mode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Agility 3 speeds are over estimated - they get slower the more the fill up and the results are only in ideal situation with compressible data.

Anyway, aside from that. Suppose it gets 550MB/s, you're talking about bytes - in bits, that's 550×8 = 4400Mb/s.
...which is well above 3Gbps (3000Mb/s).

that's the point all manufacturers put on high numbers on the box but reality is only with compressed data and in sequence reading is that, one would achieve those speeds,as for number of ssd just wanted to be on the safe side with the count, better more then less :),hope those Samsungs do prove to be reliable,as so far ive only heard that only intel ones live up to standards and have least failure rates or problems with controllers, but they are the most expensive ones a swell.so need time till reviews start coming in.
