How much should we give?

Getting married in a few weeks and we've pretty much figured out how much we need to cover everything. However there are two things that we're a bit unsure of. We'll be getting married in a church (her parish) and obviously should make some sort of contribution for the use of the church, priest's time, etc. We budgeted €200 for this, plus another €50 for the sacristan. Without getting into the whole "the church has enough money and you shouldn't have to give them anything" rubbish, does that sound reasonable or are we being a bit on the scabby side?

Secondly, I presume it's expected that you leave a tip for the waiting staff at the meal? If so, how much should you tip?

As far as I remember we gave €200 to the church, €50 to the sacristan and we got the priest a really nice bottle of whiskey. He's a friend of my husband's family hence the extra gift. I think what you've got budgeted for is fine, definitely not on the scabby side.

Regarding the tip, I have no idea what we gave so I'm afraid I can't be of any help there.

Hi ya! congrats on the engagement.
I got married in my own parish church - the priest said there was no fee whats so ever for the church :)
The priest i've known for years so he said straight out to us he didnt want anything :)
We gave 50euro in a thank you card for the sacristan

Best of luck with everything :)

I just shelled out €450 to get married in my local church! I felt this was a rip off but apparently it was a set fee!

not having a church wedding... however as far as waiting staff/hotel staff goes, some hotels charge a gratuity fee/percentage that covers this.
If yours doesn't then go with a figure you think would be good for the level of service you end up receiving.
Our hotel service charge is 5% on the meal/drinks... they waived it as part of our agreement/special offer, and it just says "at your discretion" on the contract. I plan on giving 500 euro. I dunno if that's too little or too much, I know the staff there are very professional for weddings but we couldn't afford much more than that anyway.
