Hemp Protein or Whey Protein

    Hi,

Having recently lost about 35-40 lbs of fat I am moving my attention to looking to build some muscle.

With this in mind, I was wondering

    1. Is a Protein supplement actually effective/needed for muscle gains?
    2. Which would be better Whey or Hemp protein?

    My stats.
6 foot, 78kg, go the gym 3-4 times per week for cardio and weights (still using machine weights though I hear there not as good as free weights?)
    Good well balanced....honest!

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Not needed but it makes it take in high amounts of protein generally recommended for gaining muscle. I never used hemp protein but I'm going to assume it's more expensive, otherwise I'd have use it. Whey is relatively cheap and is a by-product of cheese making, which we make a shít load of.

You don't need whey as long as you have a good diet high in protein, but it certainly makes it easier to take in more protein which for most people trying to gain muscle mass is beneficial. Read the stickies for some more info

If you can afford a decent whey then use it.

Hemp , Pea, Soy all taste terrible in comparison.

I know taste is subjective but there is a marked difference in taste and when the price does not alter quite so much the reduction in the price does not make up for the reduction in taste imo.:)

it's not that bad :) I have it for variety, but rarely as it's more expensive
(yeah, I guess I have no taste buds, nor sense of smell :p)

I would compare it to the smell of my flask if I haven't washed whey protien out of it properly. Stinks :D

Soy protein varies alot dependent on the brand. The ON brand in vanilla is really nice, tastes like ice cream, but the type you get in Holland and Barret is pretty rank - Spirulina or summat I think it's called. Bit of a pinch your nose and swallow type job.

Spirulina is an algae so they must add it to the soy - terrific add one 'nice' tasting ingredient to another 'nice' one!:)

The ON tastes that good in your opinion? Must try it.

Every unflavoured soy I've tasted was far from pleasant!

It's proper yummy, definitely try it.

The Spirulina one tastes like vomit and the actual H&B branded one is made with freaking eggs - no likey.

Just now - Vanilla flavour - it was not bad actually.

Question to all - Do ALL protein supplements contain Arginine? Can you get any without Arginine?
