Ha ha how did they get the rights to Bowser and Eggman?

Been looking forward to this since I first heard about it.

The scene with the villains meeting looks hilarious

Something very "Dreamworks'y" about it. Not saying that's a bad thing. The music, the cute little girl, etc.

However, if you look at any of Disney's recent trailers, they seem to taking a Dreamworks approach in terms of marketing. Sell it as "edgey" and "hip" . Their trailers have very little correlation to the actual movies. So I still have hope for it.

It's also brillaint for Disney in terms of marketing. All those big game names they can market the hell out of.

Finally: an animated film with pop cultural references I actually give two ****s about!

Amazed they got the rights to feature some of those characters so prominently.

Can't wait. Looks terrific. I fear much time will be spent trying to spot cameos in the background :/

On paper I Was cringing when I heard the synopsis for this but when I saw the trailer I was almost immediately hooked. Really looking forward to it.

Fingers crossed for this one. Have been following it for a while. Great to see them getting the use of genuine game Bad Guys. (Think I saw M Bison in the trailer, I wonder will he be Balrog in the Japanese version) I have faith in Disney CGI division, I liked Tangled.

God, can you imagine if Dreamworks got it though? Sure, the popculture references are abound in this but at least here they serve the story and aren't going to be dated before it even comes out. Having grown up in the 70's/80's and worked in a video arcade in the 90's I can't wait for this

Dreamworks movies are pretty pants mostly, but both Kung Fu Panda 2 and How To Train Your Dragon are both fantastic. both have may more story and heart and a refreshing lack of pop culture crap than their previous efforts. and the animation in both is excellent, the flashback 2D stuff in KFP2 is stunningly good.

The problem with Dreamworks is for too long they had an "anti-Disney" mentality. I think are getting away from it though.

shame they will only be cameos, you know the way Hollywood do things. If any of the iconic characters have more than 2 scenes and lines in the movie then I will go see it.

Other than the Anon meeting, it looks kind of pants, IMO. A bad guy wanting to be a good guy isn't a new concept, so hopefully they're not counting on the fact that it's game related to carry the film.

Shame Sarah Silverman is voicing a character in this, she annoys me immensely, more than almost anyone else alive.

It looks like a visual feast though, story may be peripheral, will reserve judgement until I sees it.

It's a joke, but sadly very common with animated films that the US and Irish releases are months apart. I'm seriously considering scheduling a holiday to the US to catch this and a few others before Christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Is there a reason it happens more with animated films? Incredibly frustrating. I nearly fell over when I saw the respective release dates.

In our market the studios like to keep the animated films out of the crowded summer blockbuster season and then schedule them at mid/half-term instead when the competition isn't as strong. The US doesn't really do the mid-term thing.

Central Europe tends to get closer to the US release dates than the UK/Ireland market.

got aronnd to see this last week.

ill be honest i didnt know that much about it and it was only when i seen the ads on the telly that it was about vidoe game characters that it finally clicked with me what it was all about.

main reason i went is i wanted to go see bullet to the head but that flopped BIG time and went down to one showing after 10pm and this was the only thing to appeal to me thats out and i thought worse come to worse it'll do for my buttered popcor fix.

the film itself is great !

it has its flaws. the first half was almost formulaecially boring to me and while as a 80s kid i got a blast out of seeing characters like chun lee and Q bert i couldnt help thinking that the kiddie section of the audicene wouldnt have a clue who they were an all that'd fly right over their heads.

but once it gets going it REALLY gets going and its got some considerable emotional punches in it
i was welling up at the bit where ralph smashes up vanelopes car to stop her racing
    .

the humour is class too. particularly some certin wedding sequences :D

all in all its much better than i thought it was gonna be and pixar can rest assured they still have the ability to deliver a film that connects emotionally. in places it actually reminded me of the iron giant.

definetly worth seeing and probably the most enjoyable experience ive had in the cinema this year (though admitedly its only feb ! )

    7.5 /10

    EDIT.

Oooh and i didnt see the twist coming. :D

its a kids film, didnt really enjoy it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

It was ok, it's a bit muddled as the humour is very childish, but the references to old games will go straight over most kid's heads. I took my 9 year old nephew to it and he knew some of the characters but ones like Q*Bert he didn't know at all. It's enjoyable enough I just thought it could have been something more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I was bummed that this was not the nostalgia-coma that I was waiting for, still a decent movie, but I was just hoping for more retro and not the whole race plot which just seemed needlessly stretched out? Meh. Still enjoyable, looked great, and I was tuned out enough not to expect the twist near the end they did a decent job of not making the foreshadowing obvious, which is a huge problem with a lot of movies these days. 3/5

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Saw this last night, and I have to say that it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Like Overheal, I was hoping for a 90 minute or so feast of nostalgia but the references, while fantastic, were too few for my liking and the film seemed to get them out of its system within the first half hour. I also felt that it didn't really the right balance between being accessible for kids and enjoyable for adults, leaning too far in the direction of the former. Having seen trailers with video game characters straight out of my childhood, I was surprised at this.

That said, there were plenty of individual moments of brilliance, even if they didn't quite save the film on the whole. As mentioned, the references were brilliant when they were executed (
the bad-guy anonymous meeting was probably the only scene of the film where I was grinning from ear-to-ear, particularly when Kano rips out the heart of the zombie; the nod to Metal Gear Solid was another favourite of mine
). Some of the mechanisms they used were also very clever, particularly
the FPS robot, and the frame-rate difference between the characters in Fix-it Felix and the more modern Hero Duty
. I also quite liked the ending,
pleasantly surprised when the twist came and I hadn't telegraphed it
    .

Overall it's a film that I wanted to love more than I actually did. I honestly thought the premise would make it a sure hit, but I'm sorry to say that I left feeling a little cold, disparate moments of brilliance aside. Special mention to the short that was played beforehand, "Paperman". Very charming with a quite intriguing animation style that was like a cross between classic Disney and CGI.

^ That, it's not a bad film, far from it, it just could have been something more, maybe it'll improve on a 2nd viewing when I'm not sitting in a cinema full of rowdy kids :pac:

Agree 100% - you pretty much just gave MY review of the movie too! Just underwhelming in the extreme - It could have been, and I wanted it to be, so much more!

Just a let down overall imo!

    Poison Film

I enjoyed it a lot. The voice acting is fantastic IMO. Reilly, and Silverman especially, do an excellent job - the scene where
Ralph smashes up Vanelope's cart was heart-breaking
    and
Ralph's recitation of the Bag Guy pledge as he falls towards the mountain almost got me a bit blurry-eyed
    .

It was too bad the cameo's dried up after the first 30 minutes, but McBrayer [Felix], Lynch [Calhoun] and Tudyk [King Candy] were entertaining enough to keep me interested.

The 3D was fine, nothing too intrusive about it.

Also, when the Metal Gear reference popped up, I was the only person who laughed in my screening - those philistines!

Good concept, but aside from the winks to the retro gamers in the audience, it suffers from the same problem that most non-Pixar Pixar wannabes suffer from: it's aimed mainly at kids. Kids who won't get all the jokes, making this a fairly forgettable film for them in the long-run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,857 ✭✭✭indough

I thought there were a good few jokes which only adults would get, the problem was that they were all crammed into the first 20 mins or so (with a few exceptions).

Oh and I have to comment that the 3D was useless IMO! I spent most of the movie with the glasses off, with no need to strain my eyes or anything! there was barely any 3D in it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Mark Hamill

From the trailers I though it was going to be purely videogame references and bad Sarah Silverman puns. And as much as I love videogames and liked the references in the trailers, I knew an hour and a half of videogame references would get old very quickly (not to mention alienate most audiences and get in the way of the story), so I was actually expecting it to be pretty bad. Imagine my surprise at a fairly heartfelt story with a good balance of videogame references (ok more prevalent in the first half than the last, but good overall), in-character bad jokes and some child friendly (but not overly childish) humour.

Am I the only one who
thought, up until Felix explained them, that the "are you going turbo?" questions were referring to Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,019 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Sugar Rush killed Wreck-It Ralph. They have the whole rich history of videogames at your disposable - and, going by the first act, the resources to procure them. Yet they waste a good two-thirds of their film in a generic, uninteresting candy land? What a crying shame! Also think the lead characters were fairly useless. Ralph didn't have enough personality to make him a compelling hero / bad-guy, and while they aimed for adorable-annoying with Silverman it just came across as annoying-annoying.

Still, there were enough geeky nods to make it worthwhile. The 'time-lapse' montage of the arcade near the start was beautifully done. The references to MGS, the Konami Code and others earned their laughs. There were some welcome stylistic flourishes too - the nifty low-FPS animation of the supporting Nicelanders and the occasional 8-bit flourishes in the soundtrack. The credits also feature a final assault of winks, nods and fonts for those who stay in their seats, including a J-pop rendition of the Sugar Rush theme by AKB48 aka 'that huge band that forced one of their members to shave their hair off the other week'.

But alas it's all kind of window dressing. Yeah, there's some energetic setpieces and heartwarming moments, but any basically competent animation have those these days. A missed opportunity overall, but just about enough affectionate homages to retro gaming culture to make it watchable.

    Paper Man was better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I thought it was absolutely excellent, having gone in with modest to low expectations. I don't understand the criticism regarding the supposed lost opportunities to utilize gaming references more - people would do well to remember that it is a film primarily aimed at kids, and such references are both lost and wasted on them. The references that were in there were plentiful enough nod to an adult audience and the film itself had enough child friendly yet adult humor, and the middle ground appealing to both was extremely enjoyable. The generic 'Sugar Rush' story arch that ran throughout, I thought was actually great. The back-story with the
    wedding
really made me laugh, great scene and a great reference to it at the end of the movie, too.

All in all, from a person that doesn't generally enjoy or watch animated films much, I found this incredibly likable and would give it an 8/10 as a movie in itself, and not just as either an animated or kids feature.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,019 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

My problem with the second half (or longer) of the film wasn't the lack of references - that would have grown tiresome quick. It was just that spending an hour in Sugar Rush - when the filmmakers had basically the entirety of rich, diverse video game history to utilise - felt like such a huge disappointment. Perhaps it was a budgetary decision (overall I thought the animation seemed a tad flat - even when it wasn't on purpose ;)) but there was so much more fun to be had with the concept.

Or maybe I was just distracted by my strong wish for Sarah Silverman's character to be erased.

I enjoyed it didn't love it, my 4 year old who wanted to see it from tv ad's enjoyed it, 3d wasn't deep as mentioned. Beginning and end were good, kinda lost its way a little in the middle.

Agree with this pretty much....I loved the idea and the first few parts of it (especially the villain support group)...but it kind of went down hill after that and they seemed to run out of jokes....not mention shoe horning in a load of product placement Nesquik sand anyone?

No where near the top of the animated films league imo....I would stick it somewhere in the middle.

Weren't all the videogame references (especially the modern ones like Street Fighter, Sonic and Mario) product placement too?

I thought the first act was a bit slow and the humour seemed more aimed at kids, but once it introduced Glitch's character things picked up. The story and writing were clear and tight, and even if it does hit some familiar story beats and themes (e.g. the 'be yourself' stuff) it didn't feel too cliched because at least they had a new angle on it by using video game characters (similar to Toy Story's original use of toys) as the protagonists.

This really grew on me and by the time it got to scenes like
    Ralph smashing Glitche's car
it had really sucked me in emotionally also. Like another poster said, I also got an Iron Giant vibe off this.

Wreck-It Ralph is not up there with the likes of the Toy Story trilogy and Up, but it is better than a lot of Pixar's other films.

But it's not a Pixar film, though, is it? Just Disney.
