Hello, I have 2 tubs of protein and I'm going to the gym 5/6 times a week for about an hour and a half I'd say.

When do I take the protein and how often? Thanks :)

    And with milk or water?

Get some protein into you after training, regardless of the source.
Whey is just handy for when you're leaving the gym.

I also have a serving of whey 1st thing in the morning & a serving of casein before bed.

I just use water, but whatever you find works for you.
If you want to get extra calories in, add milk, if not, go with water

How long after training? I'd have 10 mins say for a shower and then about a 15 mins drive home. Can I pre mix the protein and bring it with me? I'm looking to lose weight and build muscle :P

Try to get it into you as soon as you can after a workout
Just bring it with you and mix it with water/milk when you leave gym and drink on the drive home
Follow it up with a good meal high in protein and carbs when you get home

There is no "magic window", just get it into you as soon as possible without putting a caveat of "I must have it within 30 mins or my muscles will eat themselves"

A good tactic is to either have ziplock sandwich bag with the whey in it or a small piece of Tupperware & then empty it into your shaker.

Timing does NOT matter, aslong as you hit your macros for the day.

    some people think otherwise:

can you provide some references why you think it doesn't matter?

How often to take it depends on your goals.
Seeing as you mentioned fat loss, then you'll want to keep calories in check. I'd go with taking it 1 or 2 scoops a day and with water.

But bare in mind, this represents about 10% of your daily intake of food. The other 90% is what will really decide your progress.

As above really take it when required.

Milk or water is a personal choice.

To make things easier I would suggest:

50g of powder per shake with 150mls milk and 150mls water and have this three times a day.

I mix mine before I go to the gym, find it has mixed better for after my workout.
I can't see it affecting the protein.
    Would it?

That's a lot of calories when you consider the OP is trying to lose weight. About 1000kcal in fact.

OP, I would suggest that you look at your diet first and assess how many kcals you are taking in and how they are broken down (protein/carb/fat). You may or may not need to take additional protein in the form of a supplemntary shake.

With water 150grams of whey will be in the region of 540kcals.

With semi-skimmed milk it would add about 200kcals.

740 calories from the above for someone training 5/6 days per week is not a lot imo.

It's an excessive amount of liquid calories when on a cut. Id rather have 1 shake a day and keep 500 calories for actual food. That's an extra meal, which could be a huge bonus on a cut.

Thanks for all the replies, think I might just have one shake with water after my workout as my main goal is fat loss, which in turn will be weightloss as I wouldn't be able to turn all my fat into muscle :P so don't want to be taking on too many calories.

No. My only issue would be the shake now being a bit tepid (slightly warm) - I prefer the shake to be cold so if room temp is not an issue then no problems.

I've just looked up the calories I've had today. Only had 2 meals due to getting up late :P But it's coming out at a surprising 1228 calories. I'd be hoping for about 2000/2500 calories I suppose. Just want to focus on eating healthy and smaller portions really :)

    Basic stuff:
    Whey protein
    Casein protein
    Multi vitamin
    Fish oils

    Other stuff
    Green tea
    Drink a bit more coffee
    Frank's Hot Sauce.

op, really I think you should be focusing on what you are doing in the gym and your diet to achieve the goals you are after. imo whey is really only a meal substitute if you cannot get a decent protein source or a supplement for those looking to really build slabs of muscle. I don't see how it will help out people who are just trying to lose fat and build muscle as you are is really.
Get a good program clean up your diet, save you cash for the new clothes you'll be needing.

Based on 2000 and your daily intake there of just 1228 then adding 3 shakes or 740kcals seems about right!:D
