Small step but a good one. Bearing in mind, in the states a lot of places are 32oz standard size which equates to about 950ml. Here, ~500ml is standard.

Ehh, you can just buy two. Stupid law that will change nothing in my opinion.

I mean sleep deprivation is a real problem that also contributes to obesity, but if you imagine how nonsensical it would be to enforce a city-wide bed time you see how stupid these nanny-laws are.

There's an interesting thread on a similar matter over in the fitness forum. Barry.Oglesby had an excellent blog post about it. Well worth a read here.

But will people? People buy the big ones because they are thirsty, possibly in an eyes bigger than stomach type way. Maybe they will find they are satiated after the 32oz one. I dunno, just thinking out loud here, but they might not necessarily go back for more.

I definitely appreciate that opinion, I'm not for no regulation, I think more effort would be better placed in curtailing advertising, especially aimed at children and an education campaign.

I still think that it won't really work, just based on how other similar laws have not managed to reduce consumption.

Ironically, the opposite seems to have worked with cigarettes, where the banning of selling 10 boxes seems to have helped reduce their consumption.

I think this is a good start. The majority of obesity is caused by sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits, there is only a small percentage of cases that are from medical conditions.

Obesity related illnesses are putting a lot of pressure on hospitals and costing us the taxpayer a fortune.
It is in the governments interest to bring in such measures to help reduce this epidemic. I dont think this should be called a nanny state law. It seems people are not able to make healthy choices themselves so regulation needs to be put in place.

In terms of cutting advertising for these foods, will that work??
People make the choice to consume these foods regardless of advertising. I see these advertisements every day and I choose not to buy these foods.

    This is just my opinion.

It has been demonstrated to work for other products.

Obviously people who want to be gluttons will buy two 16-oz ones. But a lot of people will just take the regular option. portion sizing is the biggest problem in fast food imo. The rare times I get pizza, chips etc I get the small option, or I split a full portion with my GF. perfectly satisfied by the end of it, but if I bought the large I'd pick at it and eat more simply because its here.

You choose not to eat them regardless of advertising. But the 1000s of others who eat poorly are obviously affected by advertising.
