i know 4 or 5 from here entered this last year, wondered whos in again
(i am in again, after finishing midfield last year)
superbly run event, looking forward to it.

(for those who dont know, its a stableford comp, random draw for tee times, reversed 2nd day, ie morning on day 1, then out late on day 2 etc, cut after round 2, with top 40 playing in reverse order in final round, very good prizes also and its the nearest thing an amateur club member will get to a proper tour event)

anyway, thought id stick it up here, as it was a lot of fun last year, and closing date for this year in this friday.
(they have a website, majourtour.com, check it out, have profiles up etc of everyone who played last year, i was out in 1st 2 rounds with lad from Killeen who won it, he shot 37,37,34)

also, its 130 euro for 3 rounds on the monty course and good prizes.

ive no connection with anyone running this event by the way.....

I heard that had been booked out but would be interested. Is there a number or would you just ring carton?

Looking at the leaderboard for last year, there's a cut after 2 rounds (top ~40+ties progressing?).

yes, theres a cut after round 2, u needed 60 points to make the cut last year.
cant remember what the winner got, but i remember it being decent, i do remember there were prizes for the top 10, 10th got free entry into next years event (€130 worth)

Just got an email saying some of last years tournament will be aired tonight on AER TV Sport's channell between 8.30 and 9.30. They will also cover this years tournament

Question on this for those who played before.

Do the scores apply to your handicap? ie if you get 40 points on the Friday, do you have to apply a cut to your handicap for the Saturday, as you would in two seperate consecutive competitions, or does your initial handicap apply for the whole competition?

Your initial handicap does not change throughout the tournament , ie whatever u start on , that's what u play all 3 rounds off

I see the tee times are out for this, bit dissapointed to see only 57 runners but I'm sure it will be a great event nonetheless.
I see the guy who won it last year off 14 is now apparently off 17 !!
(might be a mistake, they have me as 13 when I'm actually 11)

Looks like they had 79 players last year so a big drop this year if only 57 have signed up this year. Pretty poor turnout but not overly surprised given the €130 entry fee. At least with the low turnout there's a very good chance of making the top 40 cut for day 3. Good luck and hopefully this inclement weather clears before then.

Was going to play it but it clashes with the boards outing in Palmerstown House on the saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 159 ✭✭carman2011

I am really surprised theres only 57.
Pretty much everyone at it last year assumed this years would sell out.
It really is a superb event.
Tough on the lads running it.
Out of interest why do people think turnout was so bad, I was thinking :

Cause rd 1 is on a Friday (last year was over bh weekend)

Cause the monty in carton is too difficult

Cause 130 euro is too expensive

    Any other reasons

I played Monty a month ago, and as a high handicapper, I have to say I didn't find it that difficult, ok I was having a pretty good day and I admit the bunkers are very well placed but it certainly didn't live up to the reputation it had as a monster.

Played with a member and he reckoned the course is considerably more forgiving over the last few years, mainly down to changes in the rough.
I'd have to agree that the rough isn't too penal at all.

I'd say moving it to a Friday is a big factor... whereas I'd take a day off work for a society, with mates etc, taking a day off to golf with lads I don't know would be less of a likelihood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,886 ✭✭✭WHIP IT!

Must say, I'm very surprised at the poor uptake for this event. Having played last year and enjoyed it immensely, I was sure there would comfortably be 100 entries this year.

I don't think it has anything to do with the price - €130 isn't cheap, per se, but it's still a very competitive price for such a well-run tournament. Last year, two decent rounds (in and around 30 pts) saw you make the cut. That's three rounds of golf round Monty for €130, add in the great atmosphere, in-play leaderboards, fruit/water stations, very good prizes etc and that's a good deal..

I think the main detriment has been the shifting of the date to Friday-Sunday. It's ok for me becaise I can juggle work and still play - but I'm not sure I'd take a day's hols to play the Friday if necessary.

Personally, the lack of entries makes it, in theory, easier for me to win a prize - but I'm disappointed as I'd like to see this take off and a slowdown in entries in only the second year doesn't help.

But, either way, I can't wait for it! :)

As a matter of intrest, what were the prizes last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 159 ✭✭carman2011

i also really hoped this would take off, its such a super set up, and could be an awesome tour if it had big numbers.
the prizes were excellent last year, i think 1st was free entry into all 3 of this years events and €200, or something like that, top 10 got prizes, 10th got free entry into this years, so that's essentially €130 for 10th place !
Add to that all the free food, goody bags etc supplied, along with the other nice touches such as tv coverage, quality photographs, and in play leaderboards, both on the course and live on the internet.

Very dissapointed with the numbers, but still very much looking forward to it !

Im so gutted that I cant make it so if ye know anyone intrested in it pm me. Wonder will the prizes be effected seeing as there is a poor turn out?

I can't remember exactly, but I think the winner got free entry to all Majors Tour events the following year plus a €500 McGurks voucher, I think second was free entry to the Majors Tour events the next year plus a €200 voucher and it was free entry to the Leinster Tournament for the rest of the top 10... actually, maybe third place got a voucher as well.

:) Made the cut too, but never in contention. Enjoyed it though, expect I'll play again next year.

Missed the cut and played very sloppily for two days, raging :(

Was in quite decent form going into it so doubly disappointing. Still though, it's a great event and I'll certainly make the Leinster one a regular in my golfing calendar anyway.

Tough conditions on the Monty though, wow... Some par fours unreachable.

16th I think I finished in the end, got tired today on back 9, tough going 3 days around there with a decent wind.
Still, was no bother to the lad off 23 from sillogue who won it with 114!

Yeah, i made the cut also, found it a tough 3 days also, some crazy tough holes and some almost criminal pin positions!
Hit a good solid uphill putt on the 15th today to 6",as i was walking up to tap in the wind blew it back down the hill about 16ft!! Thought its was a bit extreme :(
Congrats to the winner, but have to admit to an element of scepticism,
as to how a 23 handicapper could have found that course, the cakewalk he obviously did!! But hey maybe its just sour grapes from me ??!!
Anyway was happy to make the sunday ,and really enjoyed the 3 days golf, well done to the organisers.
p.s. one other point ,while saying good morning ,and hows it going to fellow competitors during the weekend, i got blanked about 5 times .While there were many friendly golfers there too , ive just got to say to these "in the zone guys" - lighten up, your not Tiger Woods and never will be :)

Same thing happened to me twice on the first day and a playing partner mentioned it happened to him also, so it wasn't just you

However nearly everyone else was very friendly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

Made the cut myself for Sunday but never really in contention. Found too many bunkers over the course and got punished accordinly. For a 23 handicapper to shoot rounds of 41, 37 and 36 pts round there takes some shooting it must be said.

I checked Golfnet this morning and my score for Saturday and Sunday are in there as QSA (Qualifying Stableford Away) so hopefully there will be cuts applied where relevant.

Overally, a fantastic competition, very well run, organisers very friendly over the three days. All the competitiors I met said hello anyway!!!!

I will be attending the Munster outing and hopefully, good numbers will attend, I would certainly recommend it to people.
