    Hi

Trying to ditch the diet drinks. For some reason Im not enjoying water now, though I did before.

So I've bought some Miwadi and am easily drinking 8-10 glasses a day

Have I just replaced my bad sugar fix with an equally bad fix or are they ok?

Not really a fan of the water and lemon/lime thing

    Thanks

There is aspartame in those drinks which are not great for your health, you're better off buying sparkling water and putting sliced orange or lemon in it, its really tasty and better for you :-)

Putting ice in your water can make quite a big change. I don't like the tap water here unless it's really cold. Try it, and if it doesn't work then you can enjoy some ice cold mi wadi instead :D

Didn't know aspartame was in them too (should have read the label)

That's what I was trying to give up as I was getting headaches.

Will try the sparkling water with orange.

When I lived in SW Germany, I really enjoyed Schorle, which was either red or white wine diluted with sparkling mineral water - the poor man's champagne.

However, it also comes in numerous other variations, alcoholic and non-alcoholic and with still or carbonated mineral water. See here:

Try the Volvic water with lemon and lime or strawberry..

Aspartame is only in the "no added sugar" ones, and the effects of it are still debateable.

Try Cherry Active, its extract from cherry trees and is supposed to have all sorts of health benefits.

I have given up soft drinks and this does the job for me, its expensive though.

You can get Rocks diluted orange in health food shops and its lovely. Its way nicer than miwadi and robinson's diluted orange. I think you can get other flavours too. I like to think its healthy coming from a health food shop but maybe someone in the know here can say if its better than other drinks by looking at the ingredient list.

Yummy but way too much sugar, 49g per 100ml. Even diluted by 6, it's still 49grams of sugar in a 700 ml drink. Am big fan of miwadi blackcurrent NAS.

Get a water filter and put your water in the fridge, much more potable then.

Loads of calories in the cordials.

Loads of calories in the cordials.

    Hardly loads. 100ml = 22kal.

Although I'm not sure if that's 100mls when diluted or not.

That's for a No added sugar one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭Stench Blossoms

It's 5kal for 250ml when diluted 1 part squash to 9 parts water.
    (No added sugar one)

    1:9? must be highly concentrated.

I am looking at a 1:4 mix which is 14 kcal per 100ml which would be 7kcal for 250 ml.
This is approx 5 times as much sugar that is in diet coke (0.5kcal per 100ml)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭UL_heart_throb

So if you drank 2l of fluids a day, it would be 280kcal. Which would be 1960 kcal per week. Which would 715400 kcal per year. just sayin'

but is it healthy to use with 0.5l of vodka? :pac::rolleyes:;)

its pretty simple really, fill a pint glass to just near the top with whatever water you want. pour in a tiny amount of cordial. then you have orange flavoured water and its healthy. my ratio would probably be 15:1 tastes better than water too and a bottle lasts ages.

sorry i multiplied the weekly sum by 365 instead of 52. Apologies for my exaggeration.

If you add in a weekly bottle of vodka it will probably work out the same.

I use schorle as a generic term for mixing anything with sparkling water.
It's much more refreshing than using tap water.
Mixing juices such as cranberry or orange as well as cordials with sparkling water is great.

OP, I think the moral or the story here is everything in moderation. There is nothing wrong with a glass of cordial. The no added sugar has lower calories than the other ones (obviously) and the barley water cordials have loads of calories in them.
Now when you multiply that up to 10 glasses a day then the small amount of calories in a single glass suddenly become more significant. you must go through a bottle of cordial concentrate in a couple of days!

Moderation is the name of the game.

Robinson Double Concentrate No added Sugar has 4Cal per 250ml, diluted 9:1, (which tastes pretty strong to me, enough to give water just a flavor would be less

only if you drank 2L of concentrate surely? by your own figures above, 250ml diluted is 7kcal, so 2L is only 56, not 280

jesus i'm a dumb **** and i regret posting in this forum.

i should have just yielded and i admitted i overestimated the amount of sugar in cordial.

don't regret it mate, i wasn't trying to prove you wrong, i wanted to check i wasn't making a mistake, been using a bit of highly concentrated to give water a taste, so wanted to check your numbers as if it is that high i need to give it up!!

    So whats the conclusion lads/ladies?

I switched from drinking soft drinks to diluted cordinals and now I'm wondering if I gained anything - bearing in mind it was usually D Coke I drank previously...

Get a water filter jug and keep it in the fridge!
The Brita ones are particularly good.

Part of the problem with tap water is that it's quite heavily chlorinated and doesn't always taste too appetizing so you end up drinking juices and other drinks instead.

The tap water here in Cork City always smells and tastes a bit like a swimming pool!
