Avocado

    Any recipe/serving suggestions for avocado?

I tried eating it a few weeks ago for the first time, I had a chunk of it in a salad, and I thought it was disgusting. It was the texture, I think ... it was so ... moist, or something!

However I do want to start eating it regularly, for the health benefits, and I'm sure it's just a case of mind over matter - if I eat it a few times, I'll get used to it.

So, any ideas for incorporating it into my diet?

You could try an Avocado Smoothie, they might be easier on you especially in this weather, here is a couple of recipes to get you started::)

What exactly has prompted you to want to eat Avocado? Just interested in the health benefits myself, but always thought that Avocado was high in oils

Hmmm I'm not really into smoothies, as I much prefer veg to fruit, and I find veg tastes a bit odd in a smoothie. I was thinking more of using it in cooking, to begin with? Not sure if that's possible though, and maybe it would negate the health benefits.

And yes, avocado is full of healthy oils and fats - and it's high in Vitamin E, as well as many other vitamins.

I'm not too gone of avocado but so far it's nice when it's fried along side some rashers.

You could try guacamole but, im not too sure about eating that one.

I eat it raw with nothing added, whole or half at a time, after the meal/snack. Delicious! :D

Nothing added but a spoon! So yum.

It's really good with prawns, OP. I often have an avocado and prawn (and occasionally black olive) sandwich or on a bagel. Sometimes with hummus, sometimes without. I like avocado and boiled eggs on bagels too...

    I love avocados.

    I love chocolate.

Against my better judgement I really want to try these!

My favourite way to eat avocado is chopped into chunks, into a bowl with cherry tomatoes, salt, pepper and a nice drizzle of EVOO.
But I do miss the dark Hass type ones from the shops, not loving the green ones as much as all, I don't get half the taste kick from them. Hope they'll be back after the summer!

I LOVE avocados also. I eat them on their own/in a salad usually.

If you really don't like them then just don't eat them!

Great on their own with just a vinaigrette dressing.

I love them mashed up with black pepper, drizzle of olive oil, and a poached egg on top with a nice runny yolk.

Ah but if you try anything a few times, you'll usually end up liking it? It's worked for me before, with stuff like cottage cheese and mushrooms!

I just want to find a way to sort of "disguise" them to get used to the taste for the first few times, then hopefully I'll be able to start using them in salads etc!

That looks so nice, I don't have Lucama powder but I have coconut palm sugar and I think i'll leave out the dates because I hate them....hmm wonder what I could replace them with?

Oh no, raisins are even worse :( I might try dried blueberries although they look a bit too much like raisins for my liking!

I'll try it over the weekend, looking forward to it now!

It's even better if you have something to dip in the yolk + avocado combo! Asparagus, sausages... whatever takes your fancy.

Avocado goes great with scrambled eggs. Creamy and lush. Yum.

roughly mashed avocado seasoned with a wee bit of lemon juice and black pepper is great served with chilli...it provides a nice contrast to the heat of the chilli and if like me you are not a lover of sour cream provides a nice alternative.

Also fantastic on toast with cheese....lightly toast the bread, spread on the mashed up avacado, tiny shake of chilli powder, then mature white chedder on top, place under grill to let the cheese melt...yum yum yum

A variation of this is to have sardines or mackeral on the toast as well as the avacado

and according to my friend, her daughter loves avacado mixed with mango - haven't tried it myself so can't vouch for it though!
