Question about weight bench

    I have a bench with an incline/decline setting. I was going to set it to decline today and try some decline sit ups but the back rest is split into two parts. Small part ya sit on and the longer back rest. Only the back rest declines so when you lock in your legs and lie down you decline from your hips keeping your arse and thighs parallel to the floor rather than your knees as I see with any pic/video of decline situps. Is this safe or is my bench actually not meant to be used for decline exercises ?
