    To kick things off...

    Goals for this year
BHAA summer league - win a prize :)
Dublin half marathon - 85 minutes

    Longer term
Sub 3 marathon next autumn or spring 2014
I'm thinking Amsterdam next year, but that may change over the coming months

What I'm doing to achieve them

Training plan for the half marathon drawn up over the last couple of days. Basically the P&D >55 mile programme, with a bit of tinkering to fit in the BHAA races over the summer. I'm running 75-80k most weeks so this is a bit of an increase, but not too much. It just means I won't be signing up for any more races after the Raheny midsummer 5k (and the BHAA series) because my Saturdays will be full of long runs again...

This year June Cork 1/2 sub 1hr 30
    Oct Dublin sub 3hr 30
5K Sub 20. Think just need to actually run a 5K for this one.
    10K Sub 40.
Lose a stone over the summer to get to a proper race weight.
Run more, much much more now that I will have the time.
Join a club :) now college is over

    Longer term
    Top 100 finisher in Ballycotton
    Sub 5 min Mile
    Sub 3 marathon

What I'm doing to achieve them
Avg 40+ miles a week so far this year. This is going to increase much more over the summer.
    Joining a club.
Listening to my mentor/coach who I wouldn't be improving without to-date

    good idea for thread!
2/3 months is all i can plan for, so ideal, new arrival & starting a part time masters so running will take a hit but i want to acheive

    a sub 36 10km(currently at 36:40)
    sub 60 10 miles(not many around now)
that would make me happy, for now..

    to do this i plan on ;
trying that Macmillian ultimate 10km schedule.
avg 50 miles till end of july
speed work with a running group once day a week.

    best of luck

    Goals for this year?

Readjusted now since the start of the year!

    Sub 10:30 3k
    Sub 18 5k
    Sub 39 10k
Sub 1.30 at the Dublin Half (should be closer to 1.25 like Ray, but 90 minutes is the least I will accept!)
    PB's over 4 mile and 5 mile (sub 25 and 31)

Goals for the next 2/3 years?

    Sub 17 5k
    Sub 37 10k
    Sub 10 3k
As close to 1.20 as I can get in the half marathon
Run the full cross country season every year as it's great fun!

And what are you doing to achieve them?

Upped my training to 6 days a week this year, usually including 2 quality sessions a week. Starting back with group training now for the summer which will hopefully help with this years goals as I will be training with some seriously good athletes who should hopefully pull me along!

    Goals for this year
    Enjoy running and stay injury-free
Do more races and stop worrying about coming last
Build up a base slowly but surely
Be able to run 5k in < 30 minutes as an easy run
Dublin half marathon - no time goal, just get around in one piece

    Longer term
Join a club - might do that this year if I get faster.
Encourage other people to run by showing them if I can do it, anyone can do it!
    Keep on enjoying running
    Try mountain/hill running
Maybe a marathon in the next couple of years depending on circumstances - goal would be just to get around in sufficiently good condition that it doesn't put me off running forever!

What I'm doing to achieve them
I'm following Hal Higdon's Novice HM plan, doing a bit of crosstraining, eating mostly healthily and getting enough rest.

    This year?

Sub-50 10k (this is long overdue)
    Sub-23 5k
    Sub-80 10 mile
    Sub-1:45 half-marathon
Lose some weight and get to a more appropriate racing weight

    Longer-term?

Sub-45 10k (elite entry for the Women's Mini-Marathon, purely for the humour value)
    1:3x HM
GFA (3:50) and Boston qualifier (3:35) marathons

What I'm doing to achieve them?
Trying to stay injury-free - injuries are my single biggest issue in running and have held me back a lot. Also watching my diet to try and bring my weight down a bit. Have also picked a relatively fast HM course for my 1:45 attempt (Great North Run in Newcastle in mid-September), and will be attempting the sub-50 10k in Dunshaughlin in June.

I don't really have any specific times set in stone that I am trying to achieve. I'm due to run the Adidas 5 mile race next month. I ran that race last year and it took me about 62 minutes which while slow by most other people's standards, it was 4 or 5 minutes faster than I was predicting based on a run I did earlier that week. It would be great to break 60 minutes for it this year, but I suspect that might be unrealistic at this stage.

I've been training pretty solidly for the past 6 or 7 weeks, aiming for 4 times a week and have only missed a few sessions. Over 4 miles I'm already 4-5 minutes faster than I was at the Dunboyne 4 mile race last year, without even trying.

Considering doing the Dublin marathon later this year but it's far from confirmed. Will see how the training goes and will decide later in the summer. Although I would really prefer to wait until I am capable of breaking 4:30 or even 4 hrs before attempting a marathon.

Trying to clean up my diet also, I'm a few lbs lighter but still have huge room for improvement.

    Good idea alright. Here goes,

    10 k sub 38 (current 38.26)
    Half sub 1:27 (current 1:27:56)
Marathon, run a decent 42.2 without cramping and get about 3.10 (current 3:25)

I'd love to do a sub 3 marathon in the next couple of years but I'm pushing on and the half times are beginning to plateau. Last 3 were 1.28.07, 1.28.03 and 1.27.56 !! Consistent, eh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,070 ✭✭✭neilc

    This year
    Sub 19 5k
    Sub 40 10k
    Sub 3:15 marathon for GFA.
All three of these are really tough targets for me but I reckon proper goals should be tough.

    Long term
A sub-3 marathon attempt in 2013. If I get a GFA time this year I'll probably do Conn next year. If I miss out on GFA this year then I'll be going for it in spring on a faster course cause I want to do either London or Boston in spring 2014. Then hopefully go for sub-3 in Dublin 2013.
To achieve it I reckon I'll have to move up to the 55 to 70 P&D plan and do some core and strength work for the first time.

Goals for this year: Start running again. It has been 7 months that I haven't been able to shake this injury. Then build to 60+mpw and run a few races to set a benchmark.

Goals for the next 2/3 years: A few arbitrary numbers I plan to hit are: sub 40 10k, sub 3 marathon, sub 60 10 mile and a 1:15 half.

What I'm doing: At the moment loads and loads of (p)rehab. I recently reviewed what I was doing and realised that I need to focus more on strength and core stability so I've rejigged what I'm doing and it feels like I might be on the right track (I have thought I was on the right track a few times before this though).
I'm going to a physio fortnightly
    I'm losing weight - there's no way I get near a 1:15 half without losing 10kgs.

Back running after a year out, and more or less starting from scratch again :)

    Goals for this year
    3k - 15:00 (current 18.58 with club race)
    5k - 25:00 (current 36:00 in training run)
    10k - 59:00 (current 1hr.13 in Manc 10k)
Half Mara - Finish as fast as possible

    Longer term
Stay healthy & keep enjoying it
    Marathon

What I'm doing to achieve them
    Joined running club (Crusaders)
Running 3-4 times per week, aiming for quality sessions

    Medium/Long term-
A sub 2.45 marathon. How far sub depends on the available dedication!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭woody1

    this year
sub 25 5k, close to 20 as possible
    sub 45 10k,
    1.40 half ( very ambitious )

    next year
    go from halfs to marathon(s)
    1.30 something half
    10k closer to 40

just doing pure mileage at the moment,

Well, I'll use this as a sort of intro, been on this board a while but not posting until now. Started running in March of this year.

    Goals for this year?
Run first race (5k). Target time is 25 Mins.
Aiming for the BHAA/Dublin city council 5k (that a good one to do?)
From there, probably run another 5k and train further to move up to 10k.
Another goal is to drop a few pounds. Down 10lbs since I started and another 10 to go until I hit my ideal weight.

Goals for the next 2/3 years?
Increse my running distance, improve my pb's and eventually run a marathon. Not concrete goals but something to aim for and I'll revisit them as time goes on.

And what are you doing to achieve them?
I'm following the Hal Higdon intermediate 5k program for the upcoming 5k.
Actually my second time doing it, got most of the way through but got injured playing another sport. Back on track now!
I'm also consciously trying to hold back as much as possible - difficult as a beginner (when you're raring to go!) not to push too hard when you're not used to it. Nothing like a few shin splints to remind you to slow down!
Being a gadget/stat lover (or nerd) it was a big help to track things with a garmin. Not essential for a beginner but before I thought of running as boring, now I get to look at graphs/track progress etc and its a great motivator.
Finally I'm also getting through a monstrous amount of information here, (advice, training logs etc), a great resource for a beginner.

There are too many twists and turns for it to be very fast, but it's good and flat, and the BHAA races are always well-organised and good fun.

    Goals for this year?

Target for the coming season starting in October is to run a sub 56 second 400m. I have no real targets in the back of my mind for 100, 200 and 800 but if I'm to run 55.99 then those times will have to come down also. Vague goals would be 12.6-12.7 for 100m, sub 26 for 200m (or at least low 26) and sub 2:20 for 800m (though that particular one is not critical towards meeting my 400 goals, while the other 2 are)

Goals for the next 2/3 years?

Run a 400m in the 53 second range (sub 54) and compete at the Irish National Championships at Santry sometime in the next few years, and run a respectable time at this (a.k.a come ahead of 3-4 others).

Anything after that may be getting into the "living in dreamland" range.

And what are you doing to achieve them?

Last year I took my 400m time down from 64.04 to 58.68 thanks to a 4 days a week (3 plus 1 day racing when in the racing mode) focus on speed endurance and hills. I know the faster you get the harder it is to take those seconds off, but there is certainly huge scope for improvement. Last year I did no gym work whatsoever, and no technique work (plyometric drills). In addition I trained solo last year which will not be the case this year.

At the moment I am in the gym twice a week, and doing one long run of about 15 minutes. Over the coming few weeks I will be building up to a winter schedule of 5 days a week: 2 days gym, 1 day hills, 1 day track tempo endurance work, and then 1 day long run on my own. The speed work wont start until closer to the start of the season. I'll basically do what the coach says.

If I can get a good winter behind me, avoid injuries etc, then I believe a 55 second 400 is there for the taking, but who knows what the future will bring. As long as I keep improving and enjoying the training and racing that's the main thing.

    Goals for this year:

Most importantly stay injury free and follow a schedule:)

    Other than that
    1. Sub 20 min 5k - (PB 20:11)
    2. Sub 32 5 mile (PB 34:52)
    3. Sub 43 10k (PB 44:55)
    4. Sub 80 min 10 mile (PB 96 - one and only one I have done and I crawled home)
    5. Sub 95 min 1/2 marathon (PB 100:02)

Haven't made any plans beyond this year.

And what are you doing to achieve them?
Actually following a plan for each race and taking them one at a time - not randonmly on a Monday deciding to do a race I haven't being trained for because the weather is meant to be nice

    Goals for this year?

First ever half marathon in the autumn either Sligo or Dublin, leaning towards Sligo at the moment as I don't like crowds and Dublin is likely to be jammed. Target is sub 2 hours.
Have already done a 10k and managed 51:11 but could do a lot better.
Do a 5k somewhere and try and get around in under 22 mins. Try and improve my 10k time.

Goals for the next 2/3 years?

Firs ever full marathon next year, thinking sub 4 at the moment but will re-assess this next year.
Also, try to improve my times over the shorter distances. My PB for 10k (one and only race I ever did) is 51:11 so I'll try to bring that down hopefully closer to around the 45 min mark. I've never raced a 5k other than by myself in training (22:15) so I think I should be able to bring it closer to the 20 min mark.
Do 2/3 half marathons over the course of the year and hopefully bring it under 1:45

And what are you doing to achieve them?

Have increased my training to 4 days a week with structured workouts, a mixture of speed sessions, steady sessions, intervals and LSR's. Previously, I just ran 3 times a weeks at the same pace and just lengthened the sessions every week.
Really using my HR monitor and using the figures rather than just looking at them and forgetting about them. Hope to upgrade to a better Garmin this year with pace and GPS as my android phone is a PITA to carry around.

    This year:

    Sub 2min 800m
    Sub 4.10 1500m
    Sub 16min 5k

Long term: I'll keep them to myself and let my results do the talking :P, all I'll say is I never set myself limits!

What I'm doing to achieve them: 1st and foremost, I hope to continue enjoying training/racing and trying to achieve all my targets, the best laid plans in the world will quickly come unstuck if you loose interest/don't enjoy what your at! And 2ndly, train smarter and harder in the future, I'm a believer in quality over quantity.

Impressive targets. Question for you. What sort of 400 speed do you think is needed for you to go sub 2 for 800? I'd be guessing 53 but that's a bit of a one size fits all.

This year - sub 45min 10k. Just under 48 at the moment.

2-3 year plan sub 40 10k. That will be a big job!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,623 ✭✭✭dna_leri

My previously published goals for first half of this year over on my training log were:

    Distance| Current PB|PB Year|Target1
    800m| 2:12| 2012| 2:08
    1500m| 5:07| 2009| 4:30
    1 mile| 4:57| 2012| 4:50
    3000m| None|| 9:40
    2 mile | 10:31| 2012| 10:24
    5K| 16:50| 2012| 16:50

So far the only one I have achieved is the 5K, which I would like to push to 16:40 by the end of the year. For the rest they will probably be my end of year targets as well.

My real focus for this year is the 800m. So far I have run a 2:12 and a 2:15 in less than perfect conditions. I swing from thinking 2:08 is out of reach to dreaming of 2:05.0, which is a longer term stretch goal. To get there I am doing two track sessions a week at the moment - one at mile-3K pace, the other at around 800 pace.

Eventually I will go back to chasing times in 10K's - maybe 35mins but not until I feel I have reached my limit at the shorter stuff.

    Goals for this year

    10k - Sub 50m - Dunshaughlin
    1/2 - Sub 100m
    DCM - Sub 4hr

Currently running 5k a day and 10k at weekend until I start the HH intermediate 1. Could do with shedding a few pounds in the next month. Enjoying the frequency, just hope its the same when I start increasing the distance! Stick to the plan and looking forward to achieving the goals:)

    Goals for this year?
    Berlin - Sub 3.30
    10k - Sub 44 [Targeting Parkwest 10k]
Half - 1.39.59 [Possibly will only do 1 or 2]

Problem with other races is being away at weekends a lot, and missing lots of races. Already had to bin 5k PB attempt as I just wont be around for any races I know of thus far.

Goals for the next 2/3 years?
Thinking taking 2013 off any serious racing to be honest. Just running a few miles here and there for sanity and keeping some level of health & fitness.

Get back into things 2014, doing one of the big american marathons. Time goal will depend on Berlin.

And what are you doing to achieve them?
Joined Club - but only made a few sessions to be honest.
Have an excellent plan for Berlin, custom designed for me and my schedule for this summer.
Going to get better with stretches and exercises to help stay injury free.

    2 goals for 2012:

    Sub 30min - 5 Miles
    Sub 3:00hr - Marathon

All I focus on is the Berlin Marathon on 30th September...work, family etc all only side issues :)

Hmm I actually have no idea what my 400 time is, other then I've pulled a 58 split in an 800 before. I'm very much so a distance runner whos moved into middle distance in the past year, so 400 speed never has been a focus! I tend to use strength over speed to get me through an 800, I try to keep a conservative enough 1st lap, and push at the 400/500mark, and just use adrenaline to push me home with 150 to go. This would be contrast to one of the other lads I train with, who has plenty of raw speed and can leave the hard work till the last 200 and sprint by me ha!

But it is a very good question, maybe it is 53sec, I honestly don't know, other then on the bases of what I said above (lack of speed over my clubmate), I think my 400 time is something I need to work on to help my 800 time!

Smart plan, I'm a great believer that speed helps you at almost all distances, your 800 training will certainly feed through and make you a better runner at the longer stuff!

What 800m time was that 58 first lap en route to? Unless you were going close to 2 minutes then that is way too fast, and certainly not conservative.

Not that I am in any way qualified to give 800m advice. :)

Notwithstanding your obvious strengths with regards endurance over speed, my guess would be that a 55 would be the very least required to be able to run under 2, but maybe I'm wrong. No bother to ya anyway.

The aim is to keep running 6 days a week injury free anything extra is a bonus. No target times but just have a few target races.

    1. Dublin half marathon or National Half marathon
    2. Dublin inter XC
    3. Raheny 5 mile
    4. 1500m/3k on track.

If I managed them in the next 12 months i'll be happy.

Why the Inter XC rather than the Novice XC?

I like the inter XC better to be honest, The feild for the novice can be a bit stronger than the inters . You tend to get a bigger feild and more slower runners. Also the usually course in the park isnt idea for glass calfs. That and an extra 2 months training should help.

    Goals for 2012

    5KM 22/22.30 mins
10KM Sub 50,got this at first attempt last week,49mins 1 sec so hopefully can improve next time
I may try a Half Mara later in the year but i have to be carefull as i do have joint issues, arthritis.

Goals for a next 2/3 years

Keep running and enjoying it,try improve my times.
Keep my weight down as i have come from 20 stone plus to 14.5 stone and would like to get another stone off.
I would like to travel about to do some of the bigger 10km-10 milers up the country.I tend to do my racing locally

And what are you doing to achieve them?

Currently training 3-4 times weekly,i stretch well and look after my myself via a foam roller, except for the arthritis i have been pretty lucky injury wise which is why i tend to stick to samey samey training as it works as keeps me running.
I would like to do learn the art of LSR pacing, cannot seem to train slow for increases in mileage,i tend to train at 8.40-8.50 pace.....

What 800m time was that 58 first lap en route to? Unless you were going close to 2 minutes then that is way too fast, and certainly not conservative.

Not that I am in any way qualified to give 800m advice. :)

2.01! So i think it was fairly ok. Maybe i should have done a 57, and taken my sub2 chance :p

    Goals for 2012

At the start of the year I set myself the following 3 goals:
    - sub 19 for 5k (achieved 18:58)
    - sub 40 for 10k (my last two 10k's were 40:01 and 40:03)
    - sub 90 for half marathon

Following my recent 10k results I no longer want to break 40 minutes, I want to smash it!!!!

    Goals for next 2/3 years
    sub 5:10 for the mile
    sub 10:45 for 3k
    sub 18:30 for 5k
    sub 38:30 for 10k

What am I doing to achieve them?
Spent the winter building a base of time on my feet over a number of LSR's with lots of hill work
I am trying to get out consistently 4 times per week instead of 3, averaging >50km
Trying to do 2 core sessions per week
Right now I am following (roughly) the McMillan 10k workout (see this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056231396 ) so that I can smash forty4ten before the summer holidays!

    PS great thread!

Notwithstanding your obvious strengths with regards endurance over speed, my guess would be that a 55 would be the very least required to be able to run under 2, but maybe I'm wrong. No bother to ya anyway.

you will find both mean and women never runa positive split.
My 800m pb is 2.00.13 and I went through in 8seconds in last place that day.My 400m flat time at the time wouldn't have been any faster than 55/56
Every athlete is differn't in relation to speed endurance and raw speed.

Yep, nothing too wrong with that pacing at all. Had assumed you were slower than that considering 2:00 was a big target, and the time you had entered into the 10 Round Numbers thread. You're not far off so. :)

Very true that. Somebody like David Rudisha has run 45 for 400 and 1:41 for 800, while David Campbell who is 1:45 for 800, doesn't have a 400 that matches up to his 800. I think it's around 50. I guess he's more of an endurance based 800 runner, while others are speed based.

I'm aware that very rare do you see an even or positive split. Yury Borsikovsky (spelling?) is one of the few.

    Goals for 2012
Out injured at the moment, so the immediate goal is to get back running. If i can get the injury sorted soon, then I'll be looking to take a chunk out of my dublin marathon time from last year and hopefully get into the 2.4x.

Goals for a next 2/3 years
Enjoy running and hopefully stay injury free. The great thing about this sport is that you can be in competition with yourself, so hopefully I'll continue to get my times down.
Run some more races abroad, I like travelling and combining it with racing.

And what are you doing to achieve them?

Currently not allowed to run, so doing spinning classes 5 times a week. Doing 90 mins core work, exercises, and stretching per day, and physio once a week.... Can't wait to get back running!

'tis a vague goal to be sure, but I'd really love to be able to run in the mountains like some of the IMRA race winners. What am I doing to achieve it ? Nothing specifically at the moment. I try to run up there at least once a week to try to build up stamina. I will continue to do that as part of DCM training and then really hit it hard in November and over the winter.

There truly is nothing as nice as running around the mountain trails and reaching the top, except maybe being able to do it faster :D

Forgot about that thread. Did a 58/65 split the wkend, but mind totally wandered 2nd lap, I'll give it all next time!

    Goal for this year:
    Sub 2:55 marathon

Didn't really have anything else in mind but will try a few shorter races as well. Got the sub 2:55 in London but only just as cramp in one quad meant I dropped ~1 min a km over the last three km so might try again at DCM to see if I can cut another min or two off.

    Goals for next year:
    Comrades!

After reading about it (thanks to 'hot to trot!') & listening to the Marathon Talk podcast & now the Talk Ultra podcast decidied I had to give it a go and a handy excuse to arrange a holiday around it as well.

What I'm doing to achieve them
Entered the Conn Ultra already for next year & will enter the Donadea 50k as well as a marathon or two in training for Comrades starting next Jan.
