I think there was a 4wd option on some of the 170bhp diesels. You may have to go to the uk to get one.

I wouldnt think most Audis are quttaro... Maybe some most of the newer ones but not the older ones

    AFAIK it's called the Scout.

I think the OP meant that it's available as an option on most Audis.

Interesting when tripping around Europe, I notice a lot of 3 and 5 series Beemers were marked "xd" (eg 530xd) which I assume (from their other cars means AWD). Haven't seen any in the UK or Ireland with similar markings.

Yeah anything from about 00 onwards has a quttaro option except the smaller cars a3, a2, a1 anything bigger has quattaro option i.e. a4, a5,a6,a7,a8

Yup thats the mk2. There was also a 4wd mk1 octavia with a 150bhp 1.8 turbo petrol engine. The new superb also has a 4wd option IIRC. B5.5 passat also had a 4wd version with the 130bhp tdi engine. Or a W8 petrol engine.. mmm

Its not a diesel, its not practical and will cost a bit in running costs but I still think this is your best option :D

Annoyingly, they don't do xd versions of their cars in right hand drive for some reason.

OP, there's also the Mini Countryman All4

Apparently the new 3 and 5 series will be available in xdrive here and the UK.

BMW lost out badly to Audi in the UK after previous 2 winters due to rwd only and run flat wide tyres on a lot of models.

Its main reason want the 4WD gets very icy and snowy were live most winters and sick of trying to drive it in a honda civic and diesel because petrol is getting bit to expensive to drive 80Km to work and back everyday

Bar the A8, Q7, Q5 and Allroad, very few Audis are 4WD. Although there is an option for the A4/A6, Quattro versions are like hen's teeth.

Just so you know, a two wheel car on winter tyres will easily outperform an AWD car on summer tyres in snow and ice. AWD is nice to have, but winter tyres are the game changer.

I know I'm planning on doing the same thing did with the Honda, having second set of wheel with winter tyres that are put on around October/Novemeber til January/Febuary. My current car struggles to get up the hill or doesn't get up so need more power and torque which the car mentioned so far have at least double that of my current car. With the 4WD and winter tyres think should be ok to get up to my house.

    qashqai availaible as 4wd.

Surely if buying new 4wd golfs, a3s , a4s etc can be had as special order. I know of one man who bought a new 525d in 1997 as a special order even though it wasnt available here. If they exist in other markets in rhd why doesnt mean one cant get them..

That is assuming the OP intends to buy new...

Second the Qashqai..the aul lad just bought one. Super pokey 130 bhp 1.6 dCi (good Renault engine!!) on €225 road tax, very good on juice and will hold its value well.

There are a few A4 and A6 Quattro's out there. I've had both - same 2.5 Tdi engine. There are also some 3ltr Quattro Tdi's (2004 on, I think).
Allroad comes in the same configuration, but switched to 3ltr in early 2006.

Skoda yeti, is about 30,000 for the 4x4 version. You'd probably be better off picking up a nearly new Legacy or Forester if your going to spend that kinda money.
Fiat don't list the 4x4 panda on their website

Remember also that not all AWD systems are created equal. This has been posted here before - it's in Swedish, but it makes the point well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=De0RstOO_iY

    Is it 4WD?

Yes indeed. Switchable by dial in the car. '2wd' for every day use, 'Auto' for mixed conditions (switches power between front and rear drive as needed) and then 'Lock' for permanent 4wd for really tricky stuff. The 1.6 dCi replaces the thirstier 4x4 2.0 dCi which we saw very few of in this country. Only downside I felt was the low(ish) braked towing capacity of 1400kgs. originally went in to look at Xtrail 2.0 dCi but just felt it much bigger and more expensive than needed.
    Price was very reasonable too!

Because it should be restricted to cars? Amended now, bearing in mind that the Forester and the CRV were included in the original list.
We got a bit carried away discussing it yesterday:D

Most of the older BMW and Mercedes saloon and estate cars are available as 4WD in LHD only.
